Los ©olores MAYUK GUERRILLA / REBELDÍA & ALEGRÍA han sido especialmente preparados para ser evaporados sobre superficies políticas antes pisadas por soñadores con pasamontañas. La fragancia, contiene en su interior las 37 palabras que fueron plasmadas en las paredes de las oficinas del Ayuntamiento en el Estado de la ciudad de San Cristobal de las Casas el uno de enero de 1994, en alguno de los idiomas nativos en que fueron concebidas: “Aya wayik stojol Me´xicanuetik: botik ta Rancho Nuevo, patil botik ta Tuxtla, mayuk lewa. Wokola walik ta pisilik. Wokalawal kaxlanetik. Majk´antik TLC, yaj k´antik lek kuxinel. In this series of photographs, I returned to the beaches around Taormina, thus concluding a "photographic triad" dedicated to beach photography, encouraged by my life and residence near the sea since I was a boy; I post photographs that speak of serenity, joie de vivre, love in the broadest sense, featuring beachgoers of all ages, whose habits (often) are consolidated by living in sun-kissed latitudes. And yet, I ask myself, every day in the world we witness immense tragedies, caused not by natural disasters (often unpredictable), but by the sinister and nefarious will of man, and so I ask myself if it is right to post images that speak of a reality that almost seems to come "from another planet (sigh!)”, where coexistence, a sense of brotherhood, Love, coexist peacefully among people (in this case... often) in bathing suits :-) .... The next "photographic cycle" will be dedicated to several photographic series that "wait to see the light - again -", having as their theme the traditional religious popular festivals that characterize our island of Sicily.
In questa serie di fotografie, sono ritornato sulle spiagge nei dintorni di Taormina, concludo così una “triade fotografica” dedicata alla beach photography, favorito dal mio vivere ed abitare fin da ragazzino vicino al mare; metto fotografie che parlano di serenità, gioia di vivere, amore in senso lato, che hanno come protagonisti bagnanti di tutte le età, le cui abitudini (spesso) sono consolidate dal vivere a latitudini baciate dal sole. Eppure, mi domando, ogni giorno nel mondo assistiamo a tragedie immani, causate non da catastrofi naturali (spesso imprevedibili), ma provenienti dalla volontà bieca e nefasta dell’uomo, ed allora mi chiedo se sia giusto postare immagini che parlano di una realtà che sembra quasi provenire “da un altro pianeta (sigh!)”, dove la convivenza, il senso di fratellanza, l’Amore, coabitano serenamente tra le persone (in questo caso…spesso) in costume da bagno :-) …. Il prossimo “ciclo di fotografie” sarà dedicato a più serie fotografiche che “aspettano di vedere – nuovamente – la luce”, aventi come tema le feste popolari tradizionali religiose, che caratterizzano la nostra isola di Sicilia.

The next "photographic cycle" will be dedicated to several photographic series that "wait to see the light - again -", having as their theme the traditional religious popular festivals that characterize our island of Sicily.
In questa serie di fotografie, sono ritornato sulle spiagge nei dintorni di Taormina, concludo così una “triade fotografica” dedicata alla beach photography, favorito dal mio vivere ed abitare fin da ragazzino vicino al mare; metto fotografie che parlano di serenità, gioia di vivere, amore in senso lato, che hanno come protagonisti bagnanti di tutte le età, le cui abitudini (spesso) sono consolidate dal vivere a latitudini baciate dal sole. Eppure, mi domando, ogni giorno nel mondo assistiamo a tragedie immani, causate non da catastrofi naturali (spesso imprevedibili), ma provenienti dalla volontà bieca e nefasta dell’uomo, ed allora mi chiedo se sia giusto postare immagini che parlano di una realtà che sembra quasi provenire “da un altro pianeta (sigh!)”, dove la convivenza, il senso di fratellanza, l’Amore, coabitano serenamente tra le persone (in questo caso…spesso) in costume da bagno :-) …. Il prossimo “ciclo di fotografie” sarà dedicato a più serie fotografiche che “aspettano di vedere – nuovamente – la luce”, aventi come tema le feste popolari tradizionali religiose, che caratterizzano la nostra isola di Sicilia.

When I snapped the shot, my focus was on how green and lush everything was. But after staring at the same view for a while, it started looking less lush and more shaggy and overgrown. And the wood path was just kind of this dirt-colored “meh” thing lying on the ground drab and uninteresting. Eventually (okay, maybe 24 hours), I became obsessed cleaning up the jungle and doing something about that dirty, boring wood walkway. It wasn’t just a path after all, it was a transition from the public to the private spaces of the acre.
Now, the old me would’ve been making plans haul this old thing out, back up a lumber truck and build a whole new walk. But the new me is on a budget and must consult with his wife on any project that can’t be done with what I already own, or costs more than I can find in the couch cushions.
Coincidentally, I was rooting around in the garage a couple of weeks ago and found a big can of “gunstock red” stain left over from some long-forgotten project. Front patio benches and table after a fresh coat of stainThe benches and table on the front patio had needed a little reviving, so I re-stained them with it.
Despite some early concerns, they ended up looking pretty good.
I still had about half a can of stain and I could buy disposable chipboard brushes for couch money, so I figured I’d give the path a facelift.
A couple days of plant trimming and power washing, followed by a couple days to stain and dry the path, and I’ve got a whole new walkway that’s not just a way to get through the garden, but now adds color and contrast to it as well.

From the north gate near the edge of the deck you see the path where it turns and disappears under the passion fruit.
PROJECT NOTES
The Stain — I used an oil-based wood finish stain (the type for furniture) rather than a deck stain. I prefer that kind of stain for both indoor and outdoor applications because I think they do a better job of highlighting the richness of wood grain (deck and water-based stains seem like thin, chalky paint to me) as well as maintaining their color, bug and water resistance longer. You can usually pick up a quart (1 liter) for under $10 at your local home improvement or hardware store.
Stain Application — I use disposable chipboard/economy brushes for application. Weather-exposed wood is rough and has lots of cracks and splinters that will snag and tear cloth or sponge brushes. A 3-inch (8cm) economy brush does a far better job at application and will only cost you $2 or so. And there’s nothing to clean up at the end. Just dispose of the brush properly.
Drying Time — One of the disadvantages to oil-based stains is the longer dry time. Even those that say they dry in 2 hours, really need 24 – 48 to really set color deep before they can get wet. Make sure there’s no rain in your forecast for a few days after application so the wood fully absorbs the stain.
Total Cost — Re-staining old wood is an inexpensive way to bring it new life. I spent about $5 on brushes and $7.50 on an additional quart of stain when I ran low near the end of the project, so the whole project cost me $12.50 — easily within my couch money budget and definitely worth the investment.

Another part of the Bronx Zoo that I was very fond of is the Butterfly Garden. Butterflies are colorful and delicate, they are very nice to photograph. Outside captivity, they are hard to catch, let alone find one with very nice colors.
I found out that it wasn't as easy as it seems to capture these beauties. You have to find the right angle to make sure everything, the wings in particular, remain in focus. Even at f/8, 200mm, the depth of field was so narrow, you need to stay parallel to their wings.
This was indoors with, again, very limited light. Handheld, VR on, 200mm at f/5. I would have opted for f/8 but settled on f/5 because of the slow shutter speed even at ISO 800! I didn't want to bump ISO to 1600 or else I would lose the intricate details on the wings.
What would have saved me is if I had a flash with me. Unfortuately, in my quest to lighten up my load, I left an important tool that I should always have with me.. my SB-600 flash! There were couple of times where it would have been beneficial.
I surely learned a lot from this trip. I had a long list of difficulties but overall, it turned out fine. If I can get about 10 good shots out of a thousand, that is very fine with me.
My philosophy is, pick the best, then throw out the rest. I know digital made it easy for us to take millions of pictures but what counts are the very few worth keeping. Let's keep quality alive people, and strive for the best!

As you turn to the right you see the plumeria (which is small now, but will be several feet taller in a year or two), a shaggy lemon grass and some butterfly bush that keeps the tropical feel but ramps down the height and leafiness for the transition to the dry areas of the lower yard.
