It makes me sad that more people don’t know about this musical. It was a movie musical by legendary composer and lyricist Jerry Herman that aired on network television in 1996. I remember watching it real time, and it instantly found a way into my Christmas-loving soul.
I watch this musical or listen to the soundtrack (on repeat) while decorating the Christmas tree(s) every single year. I can’t even tell you what it is that I like about it, there’s just something there that teenaged-Laura decided should forever be in my holiday lexicon.
There have been efforts over the decades to adapt this musical for stage, but nothing came of them. This year, I learned that a theatre in Connecticut is hosting the world premiere stage adaptation in 2025!
About the Ornament
I used a small heart shaped ornament for this design (two inches at the widest point) so the design is pretty simple. This design comes entirely from the cover of the VHS clamshell case from long ago, the tape that I played until it wouldn’t play anymore.
I used cobalt blue mica powder to coat the glass ornament. The stylized title is on the front, with a depiction of Angela Lansbury in her gorgeous fur lined red cloak and white muff on the back. Everything was cut in matte white and chrome red vinyl.
The bow is made from a satin winterberry print ribbon. I used a red grosgrain ribbon for the hanger.
