Malam semalam saya dapat peluang untuk shot kilat yang meriah sekali menghujani bumi "Hulu Selangor" ni! Tak sempat nak ke mana-mana, maka saya shot dari atas rumah saya aje. Sekejap saya kat balkoni dapur, sekejap saya ke muka tingkap kat dalam bilik pun ada...payah nak cari angle yang menarik.
Saya pernah mendapat satu info (telah lama saya jumpai info ini) yang saya sendiri telah lupa dari mana sumbernya; bilamana anda ternampak kilat, cuba kirakan berapa saat antara cahaya kilat dan bunyinya terjarak? Katakan pada saat yang ke 7 baru anda mendengar bunyi kilat tersebut, ini bermakna jarak anda dengan kilat tersebut adalah sekitar 7km! Saya tak pasti akan kesohehan fakta ini, kena tanya pakar cuacalah tentang kebenaran info ini. Tapi itulah yang saya biasa hitungkan bila ternampak kilat dan hampir pasti kesohehan fakta itu daripada pengalaman-pengalaman lama saya ;)

In this series of photographs, I returned to the beaches around Taormina, thus concluding a "photographic triad" dedicated to beach photography, encouraged by my life and residence near the sea since I was a boy; I post photographs that speak of serenity, joie de vivre, love in the broadest sense, featuring beachgoers of all ages, whose habits (often) are consolidated by living in sun-kissed latitudes. And yet, I ask myself, every day in the world we witness immense tragedies, caused not by natural disasters (often unpredictable), but by the sinister and nefarious will of man, and so I ask myself if it is right to post images that speak of a reality that almost seems to come "from another planet (sigh!)”, where coexistence, a sense of brotherhood, Love, coexist peacefully among people (in this case... often) in bathing suits :-) .... The next "photographic cycle" will be dedicated to several photographic series that "wait to see the light - again -", having as their theme the traditional religious popular festivals that characterize our island of Sicily.
In questa serie di fotografie, sono ritornato sulle spiagge nei dintorni di Taormina, concludo così una “triade fotografica” dedicata alla beach photography, favorito dal mio vivere ed abitare fin da ragazzino vicino al mare; metto fotografie che parlano di serenità, gioia di vivere, amore in senso lato, che hanno come protagonisti bagnanti di tutte le età, le cui abitudini (spesso) sono consolidate dal vivere a latitudini baciate dal sole. Eppure, mi domando, ogni giorno nel mondo assistiamo a tragedie immani, causate non da catastrofi naturali (spesso imprevedibili), ma provenienti dalla volontà bieca e nefasta dell’uomo, ed allora mi chiedo se sia giusto postare immagini che parlano di una realtà che sembra quasi provenire “da un altro pianeta (sigh!)”, dove la convivenza, il senso di fratellanza, l’Amore, coabitano serenamente tra le persone (in questo caso…spesso) in costume da bagno :-) …. Il prossimo “ciclo di fotografie” sarà dedicato a più serie fotografiche che “aspettano di vedere – nuovamente – la luce”, aventi come tema le feste popolari tradizionali religiose, che caratterizzano la nostra isola di Sicilia.

In this series of photographs, I returned to the beaches around Taormina, thus concluding a "photographic triad" dedicated to beach photography, encouraged by my life and residence near the sea since I was a boy; I post photographs that speak of serenity, joie de vivre, love in the broadest sense, featuring beachgoers of all ages, whose habits (often) are consolidated by living in sun-kissed latitudes. And yet, I ask myself, every day in the world we witness immense tragedies, caused not by natural disasters (often unpredictable), but by the sinister and nefarious will of man, and so I ask myself if it is right to post images that speak of a reality that almost seems to come "from another planet (sigh!)”, where coexistence, a sense of brotherhood, Love, coexist peacefully among people (in this case... often) in bathing suits :-) .... The next "photographic cycle" will be dedicated to several photographic series that "wait to see the light - again -", having as their theme the traditional religious popular festivals that characterize our island of Sicily.
In questa serie di fotografie, sono ritornato sulle spiagge nei dintorni di Taormina, concludo così una “triade fotografica” dedicata alla beach photography, favorito dal mio vivere ed abitare fin da ragazzino vicino al mare; metto fotografie che parlano di serenità, gioia di vivere, amore in senso lato, che hanno come protagonisti bagnanti di tutte le età, le cui abitudini (spesso) sono consolidate dal vivere a latitudini baciate dal sole. Eppure, mi domando, ogni giorno nel mondo assistiamo a tragedie immani, causate non da catastrofi naturali (spesso imprevedibili), ma provenienti dalla volontà bieca e nefasta dell’uomo, ed allora mi chiedo se sia giusto postare immagini che parlano di una realtà che sembra quasi provenire “da un altro pianeta (sigh!)”, dove la convivenza, il senso di fratellanza, l’Amore, coabitano serenamente tra le persone (in questo caso…spesso) in costume da bagno :-) …. Il prossimo “ciclo di fotografie” sarà dedicato a più serie fotografiche che “aspettano di vedere – nuovamente – la luce”, aventi come tema le feste popolari tradizionali religiose, che caratterizzano la nostra isola di Sicilia.

Another glorious photograph of Les Artisans D'azure this time riding horses generally provided by the lovely Catherine Toussaint. These shots were taken in mid day sunlight so I did my best to overpower the sun with my beautiful Profoto D1's provided by LL Lozeau but unfortunately I couldn't quite get rid of all of the shadows... Bah!!
Shooting with animals was honestly quite a challenge, the horses were really not quite used to crowds and my initial idea of having horses galloping towards me didn't quite work out. Maybe next time! :)

By this time the sun had finally hidden behind the clouds and I could finally overpower the sun to shoot this group photo. This time around, all elements were actually present (yes, we had people crawling over the roof!). I wanted to try something a little different so I actually shot the whole thing in four seperate shots to create a group panorama. Exploiting the fact that profotos at full power require 7 seconds of retouch time, I shot the subjects farther away first so that they'd be properly exposed and wouldn't expose the heroes closer to us! Friend and retoucher Chester Van Bommel (www.artsome.be) - one of the subjects that we'll be shooting in our Von Wong does Europe tour -www.indiegogo.com/vonwongdoeseurope actually helped put this whole thing together, photoshop & all.

Two weeks ago, I received a message from one of my fellow photographers Kelso, who told me that the folks over at Les Artisans D'azure were extremely interested in working with me. I've always been a huge medieval buff so I made some time in my crazy schedule and squeezed in a quick visit. When I got there, it was like being a kid in a toy store... I was running around having the time of my life checking out everything they had to offer. By the time I left the store, we had already set a shoot date, found ourselves an awesome location to shoot at as well as developped a vague story. By the evening, after a couple facebook shout-outs, we were at 20 models.
A couple days later, I had assembled my assistants, makeup and video crew. A week later, we had horses confirmed. A couple days after that,LL Lozeau agreed to sponsor about 40,000$ worth of profoto flashes for my shoot. A couple days before the shoot, we were at 55 confirmed participants... Things were going amazingly smoothly...
The day before the photoshoot was a whole different matter... weather forecast announced -3 degrees the day before with snow, hail, 30km/hr winds and general unhappiness all around!!! Myself and a couple others set out to camp out the night before to get in some location scouting and planning and had a merry campfire in the wind, hail and more. Of course, no signal at the medieval village supplied by L'Atelier du Loisir meant that we had no idea how many people were actually going to show up the day of the shoot so we kept fingers crossed while huddling under the blankets.
I was pleasently surprised to see over 80% of the people that had commited actually showed up under the cold rain to join us for this amazing photoshoot. We had the most amazing committed models trudging and shivering through rain and mud just to take a couple epic photographs.

Hope nothing unlucky happened to anyone D:
A wasp landed on my leg while I was shooting some portraits so I looked down and flicked it...INTO MY SHOE
Luckily I didn't step on it. I have no idea how it even got into my shoe, but I whipped it off my foot as soon as possible, found a stick and let him walk on it and then threw it far, far away.
*phew*
And wow was it ever hot today. I think I'll get a dslr tan on my face :(
