This lovely view was always one of our favourites back during our time in Scotland. Part of the Angus Glens the natural amphitheatre carved into the mountains after the last ice age, is part of a circular walk which also encompasses two munros. With the heather all purple it made for a fantastic day out!

View from the Belfry, Bruges, Belgium.

The Belfry of Bruges, or Belfort, is a medieval bell tower in the historical center of Bruges and one of the city's most prominent symbols.

The belfry formerly housed a treasury and the municipal archives, and served as an observation post for spotting fires and other danger. A narrow, steep staircase of 366 steps, accessible by the public for an entry fee, leads to the top of the 83-meter-high building, which leans about a meter to the east.

Peregrine Falcons of State Line Lookout

The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known as the Peregrine, and historically as the Duck Hawk in North America, is a widespread bird of prey in the family Falconidae. A large, crow-sized falcon, it has a blue-grey back, barred white underparts, and a black head and "moustache". As is typical of bird-eating raptors, Peregrine Falcons are sexually dimorphic, females being considerably larger than males. The Peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 200 mph during its characteristic hunting stoop (high speed dive), making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. According to a National Geographic TV program, the highest measured speed of a Peregrine Falcon is 242 mph.

State Line Lookout

State Line Lookout is a scenic overlook on the Palisades. It is situated at the highest point on the Palisades Cliffs (elevation 527 ft.), about a mile south of the New Jersey–New York state line. The area is open every day during daylight hours only. There is no fee for parking.

From September through early November, volunteer observers record the migration of raptors from the lookout point at State Line Lookout, from 9 AM to 4 PM, volunteer availability and weather conditions permitting.

Visitors are always welcome at the hawk watch (binoculars recommended).

State Line Hawk Watch, sponsored with the Hawk Migration Association of North America was founded in 1997 and is one of around a dozen official New Jersey hawk watch sites.

This dainty, frothy wildflower appeared to be turning away from the other flowers in this burgeoning roadside verge. The wildflowers in the part of rural France were bountiful and full of colour , a visual feast .

It is an amazing thing to sit next to a glacier, you can hear it creaking and cracking. Although the crevasses look fairly small, they are huge.

Massacre of the Innocents is an oil on panel painting by Daniele da Volterra, created in 1557. It is held in the Uffizi, in Florence, one of a number of works by the artist in its collections (others are Madonna and Child with the Infant St John the Baptist and Saint Barbara and Elijah in the Desert).

After these things, since he had not been back to his home town of Volterra for a long time, he went there before returning to Rome and was made very welcome by his friends and relations, who asked him to leave some memory of him behind in his fatherland. He thus made them a painting with small figures showing the history of the Innocents, which was held to be a most beautiful work, and placed it in the church of San Piero

— Giorgio Vasari, Lives of the Artists, 1568

It was painted for San Pietro in Selci church in Volterra during the artist's last visit to his birthplace - he even waived the fee for the work It was the last autograph painting by the artist - after this date he almost exclusively worked as a sculptor For it he simply made some small modifications to one of his own cartoons, already used by his student Michele Alberti for a fresco at the chiesa della Trinità dei Monti in Rome. The main differences to the cartoon are due to the fact that there were two voids in the fresco - at bottom left a woman with a dead child was added (for whom a drawing survives in the Prints and Drawings department of the Louvre) and at bottom right a dead child

The Uffizi's director Giuseppe Bencivenni Pelli acquired it for 600 scudi for Leopold II in 1782. It was initially exhibited in the Tribuna of the Uffizi, where it remained until 1926. It then spent a time in the Galleria dell'Accademia before returning to the Uffizi. It was restored in 1979.

Big skies and ever changing wildlife make the evocative landscape of Spurn one of the Trust’s most iconic nature reserves. Whether you go by foot, bike or aboard a Spurn Safari (sorry – no vehicular access down to the Point) visiting is always an adventure.

For full information about visiting Spurn, including Spurn Lighthouse opening hours, Blue Bell Cafe opening hours, Spurn Safaris, bike hire and more, click here: www.ywt.org.uk/spurn-national-nature-reserve

Spurn is truly a site for all seasons, but arguably one of its best wildlife highlights is the spring and autumn spectacle of bird migration. Due to the exposed and recognisable coastal location, visible migration can be often be seen in action as birds head south along the peninsula, on some days you may see ‘falls’ of birds measured in their thousands.

Spurn is a dynamic place in the past people have tried to fortify Spurn against these dynamic natural processes, but largely these have failed. *The most dramatic of these was during the tidal surge of December 2013 which removed a section of the road, leaving Yorkshire with a newly created island at high tide. You can find out the times when not to cross the wash-over section from our downloads section on the right hand corner of this page. The Trust tries to work with nature, rather than against it, to allow the natural processes to take place. As a result there is no vehicular access to the Point – access is solely on foot, bike, or aboard the specially equipped vehicle on which the Trust runs Spurn Safaris.

Important Visitor Information

Tides Strong currents and soft sand underfoot mean that it is very dangerous to enter the water on the wash over area as the high tide comes in and recedes – please do not make any attempt to cross the sands until all the water has gone. Make sure you get the most out of your day by checking the tide times carefully before you visit and pay close attention to the latest information on display once you get there.

Brown tail moth caterpillar In the scrub around the base of the lighthouse, and along into Chalk Bank, you may notice what look like tents stretched between branches, which are in fact the overwintering silk tents of the brown tail moth caterpillar. Whilst for many these caterpillars are harmless, they can cause itchy allergic skin reactions or respiratory issues for those with asthma or hay fever – so please don’t touch the caterpillars or the tents.

Dogs are not allowed on Spurn, in order to protect the sensitive wildlife and habitats

Help protect the habitats along the Humber by following the Humber Estuary Code of Conduct

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste, and it is a real problem in many parts of the Chilterns. There is a lot of finger-pointing. Under suspicion are dodgy companies that, instead of taking waste to the official rubbish tips (and paying a small fee), unload the waste unceremoniously in the countryside - and at a huge cost to the public. On the windows of Friendly's Tap in Berwyn, IL, they advertised their coffee offerings by painting the window. When I looked at it, I focused directly on the "fEe" portion of the word...and that was all I saw. So I took out my phone and made an exposure of just how I saw it.
