It's finally strawberry season!! 🍓🍓 We can get fresh local strawberries bursting with flavour everywhere and we should! They are so good, and you can't even pretend they aren't good for you (unless of course you have an allergy) with claims abounding that they regulate blood pressure, help with immune functions, helps with arthritis and gout symptons, and reduces the risk of stroke. I mean, we're almost obliged to eat them. For our health! These were served as part of the @farmfoodcare media lunch for #FFC19 I'm sure you already know to look for local, dark, and aromatic berries to get the freshest ones with the best flavour. In fact, you can probably go for a little adventure and pick your own at strawberry farms near you. It's a great way to spend an evening or even as a weekend outing. I don't have this year's beauty shot of our maple syrup, but the season is not over yet. In the meantime, here is a little taste. This season's syrup is amber in colour but delicate in flavour. The season started late, but the sap has been sweeter than usual, meaning we are getting a better yield. The commercial producers have already identified that this year there is a higher likelihood of sugar sand, a natural particulate that becomes sediment at the bottom of the jars. It is usually filtered out, if possible, but reoccurs quickly and easily if you reheat your stop to over 200°. So of you are cooking with maple syrup this season, it's something to be aware of. Trying my have at making a white peach sangria today. And I'm delighted by the results. Especially since I was able to use it to recover a bottle of sauv blanc and 2 bottles of prosecco that would have otherwise have been dumped. (They were forgotten about in a tack box that was outside all winter ) I'm a big fan of sangria, and have a house recipe that turns heads. But I'm very happy with this white peach recipe I concocted. A couple of more runs, and it will be perfected. I might even share.
