In the "Montagne de Reims" national park in Champagne in the Marne valley you will find a beech forest with countless Süntelbuchen - the world's largest collection, approx. 800 pieces -. "fau" is the old French term for "beech". From the outside they look like different sized green hills, inside you can see a widely branched framework with many crooked and gnarled branches and twigs reaching to the ground. The origin has not yet been clarified with certainty.
we've had a lot of rain in the bay area this winter, but no snow. i had to make some.

So, those of you who know me, know that I often wander off in the woods and hills for hours on end camera in hand. Unfortunately on this occasion I made every mistake imaginable, wrong kit, kit missing, wrong settings and rushing to catch the light.
At first glance, you may think I’m crazy. The image looks decent enough right? Look closer and I’ll list everything that went wrong with this excursion.
1 - Wrong lens. I have been working with one focal length lately as an exercise to improve composition. This scene would have been so much better on a wide angle, but I only had a 40mm Macro lens with me.
2 – No tripod. I decided to pack light one camera, one lens, no tripod. I normally take a full bags worth of kit on a hike
3 – I shot in Jpg instead of Raw. The previous night I had decided to check the shutter count on my Nikon D7200. For some reason this only works 9only ways I have found to do this) is to upload a jpg to an online service that can then tell you. Foolishly I forgot to change back to Raw before I went out the next day!
4 - Rushing the shot. As it was getting on in the afternoon, the sun was dropping really quickly. I was already on my way out of the woods when i spotted the scene. With the combination of falling light and wrong lens, I rushed to get an image as quickly as I could
While there’s nothing wrong with shooting in jpg format. It really doesn’t leave a lot of editing doors open for a final image. Especially when shooting directly into the sun in a scene like this one. So, I decided to publish this as to always remind me to check and double check everything in the future.
I'e decided I will be writing a blog post to go into more detail about my "faux pas" later this week
There is evidently a guy running around this area who thinks he is Batman. During the day he keeps his Bat Mobile in this makeshift Bat Cave. I think Alfred must have quit, because this is not very well appointed. It does have a refrigerator, however. The refrigerator keeps those libations cold for a quick pick me up to conjure the courage to fight criminals. There can’t be too many bad guys in this area. He might catch some slow farm equipment without one of those bright orange triangles on the back.
Also, he seems to be starting to grow some vegetation to screen the Bat Mobile from prying eyes ... like mine!
the macromondays' theme for today, 12/17, is #safety devices--
am wondering how many lives have been saved by the invention of a battery powered "candle"?
there are 8 possibilities today-- i think my favorites are the simplicity of faux tea light and the sparkle of golden hasp clasp. think i'll have a bit of coffee while i cogitate. the macromonday album of postings and possibilities is here:
I think the plant in the foreground is Umbrella Plant (a swamp grass). In this image, the stems made me think of fireworks exploding. Camille is sitting on a stool under the window, inside.
Une autre photo de cette jolie fleur qui pousse en bord de Mayenne. Le soleil se reflète dans la rivière pour donner cette ambiance.

12:52 Vintage: Shoot something that could look like it's old, and in post processing, edit it to make it look vintage.

Blakeney is a little nearby conservation area where the river breaks up into distributaries before re-forming again. It's very rocky and the water is quite fast flowing.
I experimented once again with a faux long exposure. I took 4 photos and blended them in Photoshop to create a bit of a long exposure look.
I guessed that I only needed 4 photos to create the look that I was after whereas I had used 20 here in a previous post. I seem to have guessed right in both cases. It would seem to depend on how fast the water is moving in the first place.
I explain the method in that other post if you're interested: flic.kr/p/TKobtA

"My Letter to the World" by JAY CLAYTON & KIRK NUROCK, in 'Unraveling Emily' (2013)

Song based on a poem by Emily Dickinson:
"This Is My Letter to the World"
This is my letter to the world,
That never wrote to me,--
The simple news that Nature told,
With tender majesty.
Her message is committed
To hands I cannot see;
For love of her, sweet countrymen,
Judge tenderly of me!
Faux de Verzy. These trees are found in Champagne region of France and each have an amazing network of branches.
The power of a westbound thirty-nine car Santa Fe TOFC train pours it on as it makes the assault on Glorietta Pass at Rowe, New Mexico.
The leader is one of the latest additions to the Santa Fe roster. In late 1984, the AT&SF acquired eighteen of Amtrak's ill-fated SDP40F's and rebuilt them to SD40-2 standards, reclassifying them as SDF40-2. Although not an F45 or FP45, the units have the same "family" look as that generation of F-units.
I found it hard to find any fog in 32 degrees C so had to add it into this multiple exposure in camera shot.
Today is even hotter so am thinking longingly of evening rain and cooler change. HMMM and take care everyone!
