HOW-TO: Installing OSX Leopard, Windows Vista, Windows XP and Linux Ubuntu on a Macbook

Updated: Now also triple boot without Vista

1) You will need a format and repartition of the whole disk, so time machine your previous data.

2) Insert OSX Leopard (also Tiger works) Install DVD. Reboot the macbook pressing the C key (so it will boot from DVD). From the "Utilities Menu" window menu select "Disk Utility". From "Volume Scheme" tab, select 5 partitions and use this schema:

0 EFI protected (which is invisible under Disk Utility)

1 Name: VISTA Format: MS-DOS File System <--create this partition *even* if you don't plan to install Vista, XP partition *must* be the 4th one to avoid missing hal.dll trouble!

2 Name: STORAGE Format: MS-DOS File System

3 Name: XP Format: MS-DOS File System

4 Name: OSX Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

5 - Format: Free Space (Linux partitions will be created here later)

Every partition will host its OS. The (optional, but very advidsed) STORAGE partition will be formatted in FAT32 to share files between the four OSes. If you are installing a brand new hard disk, check boot loader type as "GUID Partition Table (GPT)" (remove MBR default or you will not be able to install OS X). Then click the "Partition" button, and all your data on disk will be destroyed.

Now you can close "Disk Utility", and start install OS X to volume "OSX". After reboot into OS X, hou have to install rEFIt boot loader (download it from refit.sourceforge.net) into volume "OSX".

Update: If you have installed "MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.1" (available via Apple Software Updater) installing rEFIt is no more compulsory if you plan to install linux after on your macbook. This update will fix built-in keyboard issue with "legacy" bootloaders, so you can use grub bootloader included in Ubuntu to boot Vista, Xp and Ubuntu. But I personally installed rEFIt because I really prefer his graphical boot than grub textual one :D

Update: If you want to obtain a triple boot macbook, without installing Vista don't create the VISTA partition on step 2), proceed to step 3a) and ignore 3b). Instead if you want to install Vista, jump directly to step 3b)

3a) You can use directly from OS X terminal the "fdisk" command, that handles an MBR-partitioned disk, to setup the XP partition suitable for installing that windows version. Open a terminal under OS X:

type "sudo fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0"

enter password and ignore the message "fdisk: could not open MBR file /usr/standalone/i386/boot0: No such file or directory"

type "p" to print MBR partition table

type "f " "4" to flag partition 4 active

type "q" to save and quit

3b) Insert Windows Vista install DVD. Reboot the macbook pressing the C key. Install Vista onto partition 2 named "VISTA". You must format it as NTFS at this point. Installation finishes and you have a dual boot Mac.

In Vista, click the "Start" button, click "Control Panel", click "System and Maintenance", click "Administrative Tools", and then double-click "Computer Management". In the Navigation pane, under "Storage", click "Disk Management". Right-click the XP partition, and then click "Mark Partition as Active".

4) Insert Windows XP install CD. You can't install any XP version coming on 2 CDs (like Media Center Edition 2005), only version from a single CD or DVD. So if you want to install MCE 2005 you need the (single) DVD version. Reboot the macbook pressing the C key. Press the enter key when you will read "Press any key to boot from CD". If you boot Vista by mistake, you must mark active XP partition again (because rEFIt will flag Vista as active if you select it).

You will see the VISTA partition marked "D:" and XP partition "C:". Now install XP to "C:". You must format it now (in either NTFS or FAT32) or XP will not boot. At reboot, select the 2nd windows logo "boot from partition 4" to continue install. Installation finishes and you have a (dual)triple boot Mac.

5) Insert Linux Ubuntu install live CD or DVD, (I used Ubuntu Desktop 8.04b AMD64) reboot from it. Launch install from desktop.

- At step 3, choose your keyboard layout as Macintosh.

- At step 4, choose to manually partition the disk:

create a / partition and a swap partition at the end of the disk. (Swap must be larger than memory to be able to "hibernate". And one megabyte here is 1000*1000 bytes, not 1024*1024)

- At step 7, before you go ahead with the install, click "advanced", and tell ubuntu to install GRUB to (hd0,2), the FAT partition. (Yes, this is the right place. Installing GRUB into the MBR will let GRUB manage the windows booting, you will have to go through 2 boot manager to boot windows or linux, which is not what we want. Besides MBR, it seems GRUB can only be installed into among the first 4 partitions to be bootable, and the FAT partition right now doesn't contain a boot code so it's safe to have GRUB live there)

Update: If you don't want to use rEFIt, install GRUB into the MBR. Hold "option" key upon boot to select "Windows", then use Grub menu to boot between Ubuntu, Vista, or Xp.

Proceed with the install. Reboot and you will see 4 OSes from rEFIt menu.

6) Almost done! Now install hardware drivers in each OS, in both Windows installation insert Leopard install disk 1 and install bootcamp drivers to make touchpad, iSight and so on perfectly working under both Xp and Vista.

Toshiba THN-NW04W0640E6 64GB FlashAir W-04 Wireless SD Karte

Dafür funktioniert sie zuverlässig und die dazu gehörige Software (app) verrichtet ihren Dienst so, wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe.

??

Does the use of the CF adapter affect the write speed of the SD card?

Yes , a bit.

Die Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit ist für mein Empfinden zügig.

243 shots a minute continous shooting.

28 shots at 8fps without delay, than slowing down.

No problem for normal usage.

Does the use of the CF adapter affect the fps speed of the 7D?

My tests:

No!

8fps or more

This lovely little shield is the best way to add a small, colorful and bright display to any project. We took our popular 1.8" TFT breakout board and remixed it into an Arduino shield complete with microSD card slot and a 5-way joystick navigation switch (with a nice plastic knob)! Since the display uses only 4 pins to communicate and has its own pixel-addressable frame buffer, it can be used easily to add a display & interface without exhausting the memory or pins.

The 1.8" display has 128x160 color pixels. Unlike the low cost "Nokia 6110" and similar LCD displays, which are CSTN type and thus have poor color and slow refresh, this display is a true TFT! The TFT driver (ST7735R) can display full 18-bit color (262,144 shades!). And the LCD will always come with the same driver chip so there's no worries that your code will not work from one to the other.

The shield has the TFT display soldered on (it uses a delicate flex-circuit connector) as well as a ultra-low-dropout 3.3V regulator and a 3/5V level shifter so its safe to use with 5V Arduinos. We also had some space left over so we placed a microSD card holder (so you can easily load full color bitmaps from a FAT16/FAT32 formatted microSD card) and a 5-way navigation switch (left, right, up, down, select).

----------------

WARNING!! Update - 5-2-2006

I just found out that when I did the Windows update and installed (41) updates it wiped out some of the drivers that were installed with the Apple drivers disk. For sure the eject key is not working any more - and if the rumor is true that the fan drivers are installed with the drivers disk, I wonder if those got wiped out too. I'm not about to sit around and see if the laptop overheats so I'll probably try and re-install the drivers... which means I'll probably have some duplicate devices (thanks windows)...

-------------------

Well - it's official. I've just installed XP on the MBP to 'test' it out. Currently it's nice because the only version of Photoshop I have is for Windows and wont get one for Mac until CS3.

I kept looking over my shoulder when installing though - thinking I was doing something so wrong.

I'm posting this from IE right now - yikes!

First impressions:

- Runs very fast.

- No way to right click without extra mouse.

- No delete key (delete is now backspace)

Otherwise, everything runs flawlessly and I can access my windows partition from OSX (as long as you format as FAT32 - wont work with NTFS)

UPDATE:

I've gotten some more time to fool around in XP on the MBP and it seems quite solid. Once I plugged in a two button mouse things got much better, what with being able to right-click and all (which is pretty much a requirement running windows).

One of the weird things I noticed was that the computer did in fact go to sleep when I closed the screen, but then woke up seconds later with the lid still closed which could be bad for batteries.

I also read a while ago that the fan drivers need to be installed with the drivers disk. I began to believe this when during installation of windows the case became piping hot - even to the point of burning my hand if I put it in the right spot. I'd highly recommend propping the computer up on a stand to sufficiently allow it to air out during installation.

Boot-up is very quick into either OS so it's not a huge inconvenience to have to restart to switch. Although to switch to a different 'keyboard mapping' on the same computer is kind of confusing (specifically for keyboard shortcuts).

PS runs flawlessly and FAST, so does office. I have yet to try some WMV9 HD movies. Which I'll probably go do right now...

More later.

OK, I'm over in XP - WMV HD definately did not work. The color information was all garbled while the video looked as though it was 720p. I popped in The Magic of Flight IMAX WMVHD version that I've used on PC's before. Maybe once the final release of Bootcamp comes around they'll have updated video drivers.

I just tried to figure out why the computer didn't stay in sleep mode. If the laptop is plugged in when you close the lid and then unplug it, it creates a power surge on hub-port error message which wakes the machine. Also, un-plugging and plugging the machine into power (using the connection at the laptop - not the wall) causes the screen to flash black.

This is a story about 0-byte .wav files and how you should always hit "stop" on your recording device so it updates the FAT, wave/RIFF headers and whatnot with the complete and correct file metadata. In my case, I forgot to hit "stop" and pulled the power. 😂

I might have screwed this up further by first attempting to fix the volume in OS X's Disk Utility, vs. running DOS/Windows' chkdsk. If you're stuck with a 0-byte file and reading this in future, before touching anything else, put the device in write-protected mode if you have the option, and make a full image of the disk; then try the Windows chkdsk route and see if "automated" repair is possible. Here's a YouTube video about the chkdsk path.

The Taperssection forums has a thread that may provide useful. Additionally, yonder for some wave/RIFF header details.

A little history

My first encounter with hex editing was as a kid, editing strings in computer games to make them say things they wouldn't normally. Later in the 90s, I did the same to make custom Windows autoload spash screens and sounds by modifying the executable from the "Plus!" CD. Code signing was not much of a thing back then. 😂

Back to the present...

I finished recording a live 4.5-hour DJ set at a local bar/lounge, and promptly unplugged my MicroSD-based audio recorder from its external power supply without thinking to hit "stop" first and finish the recording to disk. 😰

Tech bits

The Tascam recorder I use has an option to split recordings on the 2 GB file barrier. As this was a 4.5-hour recording, I had one 2 GB file intact and another one with a file size of zero bytes by the end of the night.

I knew the data was somewhere on disk (this device can't have much of a RAM buffer or anything,) but whatever data was written wasn't being reflected in the volume's regular file system as you'd see in Finder / Explorer. It appeared the file's wave/RIFF header had not yet been written, either, but there was at least a FAT / directory entry for the file. (It's been a while; my knowledge of file systems is rusty at best.)

Recovery

A relatively-inordinate amount of time and various FAT32 recovery tool attempts* later, I realized I could probably just find the raw wave/RIFF binary data via programs like HexFiend (Mac) and HxD (Windows), after creating a byte-for-byte image of the MicroSD volume in its entirety.

Hex editing to the rescue

By searching for the bytes at the end of the first good file in the disk image and exporting from there through the end (effectively, copy/pasting "all bytes on this disk image minus the FAT and the first big 2 GB file"), I figured I'd have most if not all of the missing data left to sift through.

From there, a "Raw Data" import from Audacity (since this slice lacked a wave/RIFF header) using Signed 16-bit PCM, Little-endian, 2 Channels (Stereo), 0 bytes offset, worked out pretty well. I got two different blocks of audio, recovering everything that was missing.

There was one small corrupted block of a few seconds that I had to delete, but it seems the rest of the mix was intact. I suspect this corruption was from hidden spotlight files and other crap being written to the disk by OS X, and paradoxically, one recovery tool, clobbering this "unused" data taking space on disk. Boourns.

Success?

The mix itself was not the best, but it was the opportunity to recover needlessly-lost work, right a wrong, and maybe learn something that counted. 😉

* Most recovery tools did not find the missing data, presumably because it wasn't referenced by the FAT, nor obviously identifiable as audio data - I'm guessing - without a wave/RIFF header. Active Partition Recovery's "Last Chance" scanning option did pick up on about 75 minutes of missing data, but what it pulled was ultimately not the right slice.

Teach Parents Tech is an online tutorial designed by Google for the

"older generation" such as, um, me. ;) Personally, I plan to send it

to my daughter.

Teach Parents Tech:

www.teachparentstech.org/

In the meantime, however, I thought for one, some of us might find it

a useful reference to share with others, and second, we might find it

interesting to take a look at how Google, with all their resources,

designed the tutorials and what skills they selected as foundational.

Things Google did right were to keep design simple, videos short and

provide captions. Things I wish they had done would be to include text

or printed instructions with screenshots, not just videos, and to

include links to sources of more information. Most if not all of the

actors in the videos are young adults, and with the tone and

presentation of the content, I am getting the distinct impression that

this is actually targeting that audience, NOT the older group it

claims to be targeting. At the very least, the true target audience is

unclear.

I noted that some of the Google "skills" they push are actually things

that cause trouble on my computer (adding a background to Google

pages, or the Chrome browser). There are also a lot of things I

consider foundational that Google did not include, such as

accessibility tips & tricks, troubleshooting outdated computers, and

even just search basics! For their official target audience of parents

and older adults, I expected some topics to meet their needs, such as

health and finance tools, at least as much as travel and pizza.

Here are the topics Google included. What do you think are core tech

The same Wiznet chipset as the forthcoming Arduino Ethernet, but in the form of a shield that attaches to an existing Arduino.

It took me about five minutes to get a simple HTTP request going using the ethernet software library.

The SD memory slot is reserved for future use. There's no hardware FAT32 filesystem driver, so it's only usable for direct block access right now.

This lovely little shield is the best way to add a small, colorful and bright display to any project. We took our popular 1.8" TFT breakout board and remixed it into an Arduino shield complete with microSD card slot and a 5-way joystick navigation switch (with a nice plastic knob)! Sat Nav, Bluetooth for phone and audio streaming, SD Card reader & USB for music, videos, image viewer, DVD player and a standard 3.5mm stereo input. Made by BOSCH. Oh if anyone else has one of these units and their memory stick doesn't work, make sure its formatted to the FAT32 format and not NTFS.

Bluetooth-Soundsystem, FM-Radio, USB-Port, Mp3.

The WD TV plays back all kinds of video codec, including .mkv and .wmv9. It even reads media off all kinds of disk formats, including FAT32, NTFS, and HSF+!!

Watch my video demo here: www.vimeo.com/2137683

Took some shots of my 1966 Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider Duetto in GT4 at the Burg. This time I've altered the contrast on the image. It seems all the contrast fiddling on the playstation matters for naught. It does not take into account the gamma of the screen. So I've gimped the colour contrast up.

This is a *test* image from tonight's shooting session with Allen. The original file approaches 100 Megapixels (you read that right!) Even cropped, the image sits at 17076 pixels wide, 5168 pixels tall. If one were to print it at 300dpi, the print would be about 57" x 17".

You know you want to view full size...

Yes, I actually shot this as HDR. No, I'm not going to post process it tonight.

Some other data:

Shot on a EF100mm F/2.8 USM Macro lens; n=24 (15 deg arc), 6 shots.

Original photoshop PSD: 1.2Gb.

This file is so large in size that Lightroom can't even open the exported JPG.

On my Athlon X2 3000 with 4Gb of RAM, the stitching, vignetting removal, lens distortion correction and conversion to 8bit JPG took over an hour of computing time.

To do this in HDR, it would take: 6 shots x 7 exposures x 120Mb per exposure. Probably will come close to approaching the old 4Gb FAT32 file size limit for the Photoshop file!

Crysis is now in the Nintendo Switch today! Play this remastered version now.
