Happy Solar Farts Friday. Yes, that's still a thing for now. It seemed as the night went on, the sky would just get crazier with a variety of colors. I set up a small LED light to illuminate the trees. This was the second to last photograph taken that night. Mother Nature was saving the best for last ... or at least next to last. In den vergangenen Jahren erlebten die drei verbliebenen, 1959 bei der Schindler Waggon AG im schweizerischen Pratteln gebauten ABe 8/8 der SSIF (Società Subalpina Imprese Ferroviarie), die für den Betrieb auf dem italienischen Abschnitt der Vigezzina/Centovallibahn verantwortlich ist, noch einmal ein Revival in ungeahntem Umfang. Grund waren in erster Linie technische Probleme an den planmäßig im Interregio-Verkehr zwischen Domodossola und Locarno eingesetzten Panoramatriebwagen, die zwischenzeitlich komplett abgestellt werden mussten. Doch auch nach deren Wiederinbetriebnahme im Laufe des Spätjahres 2023 kamen die ABe 8/8 immer wieder jenseits ihrer eigentlichen Domäne - den inneritalienischen Regionalzügen - zu internationalen Einsatzehren. Gerne mit einem Regionalexpress-Zugpaar, das Locarno am Vormittag gen Domodossola verließ, um nach kurzem Aufenthalt zur Mittagszeit wieder gen Schweiz zu fahren.

Ein scheinbares Ende gefunden hatten diese Ausflüge über die Grenze dann im Sommer 2025, als sämtliche internationalen Kurse recht stabil entweder von ABe 4/6, den Panorama-Triebzügen oder neu an die FART gelieferten Stadler-Fahrzeugen besetzt wurden. Eine Überraschung gab es allerdings Ende September 2025, als der oben genannte RE-Umlauf mit einer Hin- und Rückfahrt Locarno - Domodossola u.z. nochmals auf ABe 8/8 (rück-)umgestellt wurde. Hintergrund unklar, aber natürlich höchst willkommen... Ein - jetzt vielleicht endgültiges? - Ende fand das Intermezzo wiederum zum vergangenen Winterfahrplanwechsel.

Am 3. November 2025 surrte der Oldie ABe 8/8 Nr. 23 "Ossola" aber noch als RE 157 (Domodossola - Locarno) durch das Val Vigezzo. Erwartet habe ich ihn an einer meiner Lieblingsfotostellen der Strecke: An der alten Steinbogenbrücke, die kurz vor dem (ehemaligen) Haltepunkt Isella-Olgia in weitem Bogenschwung das felsige Flussbett des Melezzo Orientale überspannt. Dort auf einem sonnigen Felsblock zu sitzen und dem Plätschern des Wassers zu lauschen, macht einfach Spaß! Also kein Motiv für einen überhasteten Aufbruch nach der Zugdurchfahrt...:)

Wie es mit den ABe 8/8 in ihrem 67. Einsatzjahr weitergehen wird, ist offen. International wurden sie in den letzten Monaten nicht mehr gesichtet - Und auch die bislang noch recht verlässlich mit "Altbau" gefahrenen Regionale Domodossola - Re u.z. sind heiße Kandidaten für eine baldige Umstellung auf die vier von der SSIF bestellten Stadler-Triebwagen (baugleich zu ihren bereits im Einsatz befindlichen FART-Pendants), die im Laufe des Jahres 2026 in den Planbetrieb einscheren sollen. Auch wenn die exakten Auswirkungen der Neufahrzeuge noch nicht vorhersehbar sind, dürfte es für die alten ABe 8/8 (und ABe 6/6) bald eng werden.

These thorny monstrosities of a weed...flower...thing, grow everywhere around here. The first time I seen them I just stopped and literally said whoooowa. They are huge and have tons of thorns. I don't know their technical names (feel free to tell me, I would love to have the name in my pocket ”so to speak”. )But I thought I would share this with you for those up north that have never seen them. (I think they only grow down here…I have no clue. :-)

Makeup by Nicole Greener, hair by Annie Reynor. Clowning around by Megan. This was the last setup of the day, just for shits and giggles, and we'd just cracked a couple of beers to wind down. Megan had been trying and failing to stay serious all day and we got it out of her system here. Annie was calling out situations for Megan to respond to, things like "pretend your boyfriend just farted...you just won a million dollars...think about puppies...now think about fire...now think about puppies on fire..."

Lit with a Mola Demi beauty dish over camera, white reflector below, head with a 40-degree grid behind Megan for the background. Shot with just modeling lights, no strobes were fired.
