The Second Punic War broke out in 218 BC after Hannibal's great Army made the famous military exploit of carrying war to Italy by crossing the Alps with approximatively 37 North African war elephants.
The fate of these elephants is tragic. Most died from the cold or from lack of food in the Alps, and the rest died in the first battle of Trebbia in Italy.
They were drunk and wore heavy armor for combat.
This species of North African elephant no longer exists, they were supposed to be smaller than any elephant we know of at the time.

The Lake is one of Central Park's most important scenic destinations. This 20-acre water body connects the Ramble, Bethesda Terrace, and various west side landscapes to form what is often called the heart of Central Park.
Note: "The San Remo" in the background is where the rich and famous lives.
Today my daughter & I visited here, I wanted to take some water lilies there, but, none of them, except one lotus lily, so disappointing tho. But, we had a grand time visiting MoMA. It was hot today, but, later in the late afternoon it got a little cooler. There's always a lot to see in Manhattan, esp. now, with a lot of tourists and so forth.
RKO_1939. Famous Malaika with one curious but very little cub. Taken in the wild at the Masai Mara conservancy in Kenya. From the archives.
What else can you wish when you travel to Masai Mara conservancy? Spend some time with a good looking Cheetah mother and her cubs and have time enough to watch them for a while and make some acceptable shots?

Finding an undamaged Rose around here in December is a difficult task, but one I love to take on. I didn’t find a beauty this day but did find a Rose that is lovely in its own slightly tattered way.

Pandion haliaetus
Well, famous to birdy nerds anyway! It is not that often you go searching for a famous sighted bird and find it on your first go.
I headed down to Werribee River, despite the ominous clouds and promise of rain to see what I could see. Parked in the car park and what did I spy? Surely not the Osprey sitting in an open branch in front of the car park eating its lunch. Happy Days.
It was very windy and we were still some distance away so not tack sharp and the head feathers abit blown out.
Still, a rare treat indeed.

The Bateleur eagle is the most famous of the snake eagles. Bateleur is French for 'tightrope-walker'. This name was probably chosen because of its distinctive aerial acrobatics.
The nuptial aerial display is spectacular, with steep dives by the male at the female. She will roll on her back, presenting her claws and then roll on over to right herself as he hurtles past. There may be follow-the-leader dipping and rolling flights, including 360 degree lateral 'barrel' rolls, often accompanied by very loud slapping together of the wings. This percussion can be heard from far, as well as the accompanied very loud crowing calls.
Standing nearly 150' tall, this isolated ridge of yellowish white sandstone is home to a unique double arch. The larger arch is nearly 100' in diameter.
The formation is named for the first full-time editor of National Geographic Magazine and, later, president of the National Geographic Society, Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor (1875-1966).
Just south of Kodachrome Basin State Park, Grosvenor Arch is deservedly one of the most popular features in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
While traveling through southern Utah to visit National Parks, this became of interest to us, because we previously lived near the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station in Bethesda, Maryland.
Dewhursts created a wonderful range of bright colours, including this bright shade of mid green, which has the most delightful name: "Jewel Green".
When it was my birthday three years ago, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas that same year.
Those wonderful gifts are what has inspired me to create this series of "Embroider my World" images featuring my vintage bobbin collection. In this case I am using my very rare Jewel Green spool sitting on a ruched green satin pincushion which was a gift from the same aforementioned friend, this Christmas. The green satin rose in the background also comes from her. The Green Jewel spool of cotton dates from between 1938 and 1954. Around the spool sit two dark green Art Deco buttons with the thinnest band of gold on each, a clear glass Art Deco button and some Art Deco lingerie buttons of bright green Bakelite, still attached to their original card. In the background is a floral sterling silver thimble made by Henry Griffith and Sons in 1897 and another Art Deco glass button.
The floral thimble is sterling silver and was made by silversmiths Henry Griffith and Sons in Birmingham in 1897. Henry Griffith and Sons commenced in 1850, was continued as Henry Griffith & Sons (until 1898) and later as Henry Griffith & Sons Ltd. They were well known for their manufacture of silver thimbles, and later for their silver and gold jewellery. They closed their doors in 1982. Thimble making was part of the Griffith family heritage. The father of Henry Griffith was a thimble maker and was put in charge of the thimbles departments at the beginning of his son's activity. The Griffiths became one of the leading producers of silver thimbles and were one of the only silversmiths who marked some of their thimbles with 'Sterling Silver' instead of having them hallmarked.
Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.

Viktoriapark
Victoria Park
In addition to the national monument, the waterfall is the most famous attraction in Victoria Park. In 1891 the city council approved the construction. A natural-like complex made of granite and limestone with trees on the side was then created. In order to operate the waterfall, the water must be pumped up the Kreuzberg. The height difference is 24 meters and 13,000 liters are moved per minute. On October 14, 1893, the system was tested publicly for the first time in a ceremonial setting.
Found this angle while walking the famous Tower Bridge. The traffic was zooming past...pretty close to where I was squeezed. Composite of several long exposures. The details under the arch are seen in large. The grain on the stones are natural (texture).

The famous lighthouse on Denmark's west coast has an exciting history. Inaugurated in 1900, it was hit by a shifting dune just ten years later. In 1968, the lighthouse had to stop operating because its light could no longer be seen from the sea. In 2012, the shifting dune completely passed the lighthouse and has been moving north ever since. However, the sea was now increasingly becoming a threat to the lighthouse. There was a risk that it could tip over if it crashed onto the coast. Therefore, it was moved 70 meters inland in 2019.

Although Wellington in Somerset is not a coastal town, both north and south coasts are not much more than a hours drive (depending on the tourist traffic).
