The museum was founded in October 1983 in Toronto at Exhibition Place and later moved to Ontario Place theme park.

In 1994, it moved to St. Marys, Ontario.

The Hall of Fame and Museum is dedicated to preserving Canada's baseball heritage which dates back to June 4, 1838, when a game which very closely resembled today's game of baseball was played in Beachville, Ontario.

The Hall gained some major attention when Pete Rose became eligible for election for earning his 4,000th MLB hit while playing with the Montreal Expos in 1984, however Rose has yet to be elected to the Hall.

The small community of Hatch, New Mexico bills itself as the chili capital of the world. There did seem to be a lot of chilies there. Fresh, dried, roasted, bottled, green or red; whatever your heart desires in the way of chili can be found in Hatch.

Happy Saturated Saturday!

My parish cemetery (Markyate in Hertfordshire). The place may be known for the wrong reason. A sad record. The motor car hit and then dragged the little boy for hundreds of meters along High Street and into London Road. The driver fled but was caught later. Niagara was constructed from 1812 to 1813 to protect the vulnerable American coastline on Lake Erie from the British and played a pivotal role in the battle for the lake. Along with most warships that served in the war, Niagara was sunk for preservation on Presque Isle in 1820. Raised in 1913, it was rebuilt for the centennial of the Battle of Lake Erie. After deteriorating, the restoration of Niagara was started again in the 1930s, but was hampered by the lack of funds caused by the Great Depression and remained uncompleted until 1963. A more extensive restoration was carried out in 1988 in which much of the original ship was largely destroyed. The incorporation of new materials and modern equipment makes it ambiguous as to whether it is or is not a replica. (Wikipedia)

The Niagara is the third reconstruction of the original. This two-masted square-rigged sailing vessel was launched in 1988 for the 175th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie. (Erie Maritime Museum)

The Temple of Fame at Studley Royal Water Gardens is a Georgian folly created as a place to entertain and picnic for Georgian visitors to the Gardens and is sited in the woods on a hill overlooking the ornamental lakes.

The building is an Ionic rotunda on a stone plinth, though the columns are hollow, made of wood and plaster – which may be interpreted as a comment on the hollow and deceptive nature of fame.

Excerpt from 'The Temple of Fame: A Vision'' an eighteenth-century poem by Alexander Pope:

"These massy columns in a circle rise,

O’er which a pompous dome invades the skies;"

My Flickr friends in S. Ontario have doubtless already had their fill ;-) of pictures of this Northern Hawk Owl that has arguably become the most famous bird of the year in the province. This bird of the boreal forest rarely comes to the far south, so hundreds of birders (including from border states) have traveled to a small town north of Toronto to add him to their life lists. From "The Birds of Hamilton": "Finding an area well supplied with rodents, the birds will establish a territory and can often be found perched atop the same tree or pole for weeks or even months." This particular bird has probably been in the same spot for several weeks and was "discovered "last week. The NHO is a diurnal hunter and was very active during our visit (note the blood on his underside after a mid-day snack) Lifer #267... a good end to the birding year :-)

History of the Walhalla Hall of Fame

The Walhalla is probably the main work of art by the Bavarian King Ludwig I. Built by the architect Leo von Klenze, from 1830 to 1842.

When Napoleon had defeated the Prussians in 1807, the Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria came up with the plan to unite the praiseworthy Germans in a temple of honor for the fatherland. Walhalla translates as the hall of the dead. The Walhalla is an open monument, i.e. that even today worthy persons can be recorded as busts.

Architecture of the Walhalla

The interior is characterized by floor and wall surfaces made of marble, a richly structured ceiling with figures from Germanic mythology, a frieze running all around with relief depictions from early German history, the caryatids supporting the roof structure and six goddesses of victory.

Fame is in the front seat

Trouble with the kerb

Mama’s in the back seat

Singing like a bird, oh no

Take me to the good life

Stanger on the mountain

Hanging on your words

Walking in a nightmare

Everything is blurred, oh no

Take me to the good times

Don’t forget what you told me

I’m a wolf in sheep’s clothing

Watching, waiting

My prey is praying

There’s no escaping

My blood’s pumping

I go on hunting

The hunter, the hunted

Oh, oh, oh, oh Ooooh oooh

The Walhalla

is a hall of fame that honours laudable and distinguished people in German history – "politicians, sovereigns, scientists and artists of the German tongue"; thus the celebrities honoured are drawn from Greater Germany, a wider area than today's Germany, and even as far away as Britain in the case of several Anglo-Saxon figures.

The hall is a neo-classical building above the Danube River, in Donaustauf, east of Regensburg in Bavaria, the exterior modelled on the Parthenon in Athens.

On Saturday morning Evie & I went to the beach, it was glorious and sunny, making the most of the gorgeous weather. Evie was inspired to write her name in the sand, with a pebble of course :)
