Suddenly this big hawk (red-tailed I guess) appeared from behind the sand hill and perched on top of an electricity pole near me and my wife. While I was taking pictures, somebody came down the hill, used a whistle several times, and swung a rope around to make some noise, apparently to call the bird back, and the bird followed the order.

We were super-impressed, it was a pity we were too far to talk to that person.

The Harris Hawk is a medium-large bird of prey that breeds from the southwestern United States south to Chile, central Argentina, and Brazil. Birds are sometimes reported at large in Western Europe, especially Britain, but it is a popular species in falconry and these records almost certainly all refer to escapes from captivity..This one has been at large for some time and is thriving it jesses (leather strips around its legs to hold in a glove while hunting or handling the bird ) are broken and warm so not much chance of them getting tangled thankfully. .Was lucky enough to see it land and after a 40 minute stalk with badger in tow this is 1 of quite a few shots i got

Since about 1980, Harris's hawks have been increasingly used in falconry and are now the most popular hawks in the West (outside of Asia) for that purpose, as they are one of the easiest to train and the most social.

Trained Harris's hawks have been used for bird abatement by falconry experts in Canada and the United States at various locations including airports, resorts, landfill sites, and industrial sites
