Falconry is the ancient art of hunting with birds of prey. A visit to Dunrobin Castle now includes daily birds of prey flying demonstrations on the Castle lawn. Falconry was originally developed as a means of hunting fast or difficult prey as food for the table, and is still practiced for this purpose in many parts of the world today.

For me as a hobby-birder it is much easier to capture a big bird like this snowy-owl during a falconry-show or a smaller bird in a voliere than chasing wild birds in an out-door excursion ...

Since about 1980, Harris's hawks have been increasingly used in falconry and are now the most popular hawks in the West (outside of Asia) for that purpose, as they are one of the easiest to train and the most social.

Trained Harris's hawks have been used for bird abatement by falconry experts in Canada and the United States at various locations including airports, resorts, landfill sites, and industrial sites

Falconry, an integral part of desert life for many centuries, was practiced originally for purely practical reasons, i.e. the necessity to supplement a meager diet of dates, milk and bread with a tasty hare or well-fed bustard. In time it developed into a major sport enjoyed by rich and poor alike.

Falconry was developed into a major sport enjoyed by the poor and the rich alike and was an integral part of desert life practiced originally for practical reasons such as supplementing the meager diet of dates, milk, and bread. Falconry, or the upkeep of falcons is a traditional and highly valued custom in the UAE, reflecting the Bedouin love of this sport. The falcon itself, known as the "Saqr" is a bird that is much admired by Arabs because of its fascinating beauty, posture, sharp eyesight and grandeur.

The falconer holds his Peregrine Falcon aloft to flap its wings and warm the muscles of its wings ready for flight.
