On a recent visit to the San Diego Zoo, I found it a bit difficult to photograph one of my favorite birds.
The Flamingos are being kept in a screened-off enclosure completely away from the other birds in an attempt to protect these beautiful creatures from the Avian Flu. Certainly hope the Zoo officials are successful.
I didn’t want to leave empty handed, however, so I shot through the screen to capture the jewel of this Flamingo.

Flamingos are tall, pink wading birds with thick downturned bills. Flamingos have slender legs, long, graceful necks, large wings, and short tails. They range from 3 to 5 feet tall.
Flamingos are highly gregarious birds. Flocks numbering in the hundreds may be seen in long, curving flight formations and in wading groups along the shore.
On some of East Africa’s large lakes, more than a million flamingos gather during the breeding season.
In flight, flamingos present a striking and beautiful sight, with legs and neck stretched out straight, looking like white and rosy crosses with black arms.
No less interesting is the flock at rest, with their long necks twisted or coiled upon the body in any conceivable position.
Flamingos are often seen standing on one leg. Various reasons for this habit have been suggested, such as regulation of body temperature, conservation of energy, or merely to dry out the legs.
When a flamingo spots potential dinner—favorite foods include shrimp, snails, and plantlike water organisms called algae—it plunges its head into the water, twists it upside down, and scoops the fish using its upper beak like a shovel. They are able to "run" on water, thanks to their webbed feet, to gain speed before lifting up into the sky.
Flamingos build nests that look like mounds of mud along waterways. At the top of the mound, in a shallow hole, the female lays one egg. The parents take turns sitting on the egg to keep it warm. After about 30 days, the egg hatches.
Flamingo young are born white, with soft, downy feathers and a straight bill. The bill gradually curves downward as the flamingo matures. Both parents take care of the newborn flamingo, feeding it a fluid produced in their digestive systems.
The young leave the nest after about five days to join other young flamingos in small groups, returning to the parents for food. The parents identify their chick by its voice.
After about three weeks, the adults herd young flamingos into large groups called crèches where they start to look for food on their own.

The Burrowing Owl
Couldn’t entice this little guy to come out of his burrow and pose for a portrait, so I settled for a head shot…Life is Good !!!
Burrowing Owls are small, sandy colored owls with bright-yellow eyes. They live underground in burrows they’ve dug themselves or taken over from a prairie dog, ground squirrel, or tortoise. They live in grasslands, deserts, and other open habitats, where they hunt mainly insects and rodents. Their numbers have declined sharply with human alteration of their habitat and the decline of prairie dogs and ground squirrels.
Before laying eggs, Burrowing Owls carpet the entrances to their homes with animal dung, which attracts dung beetles and other insects that the owls then catch and eat. They may also collect bottle caps, metal foil, cigarette butts, paper scraps, and other bits of trash at the entrance, possibly signifying that the burrow is occupied.
Burrowing Owls have a higher tolerance for carbon dioxide than other birds—an adaptation found in other burrowing animals, which spend long periods underground, where the gas can accumulate to higher levels than found above ground.
Unlike most owls in which the female is larger than the male, the sexes of the Burrowing Owl are the same size.
Burrowing Owls often stow extra food to ensure an adequate supply during incubation and brooding. When food is plentiful, the birds' underground larders can reach prodigious sizes. One cache observed in Saskatchewan in 1997 contained more than 200 rodents.
The oldest known Burrowing Owl was at least 9 years, 11 months old when it was sighted in California in 2014.

Every so often a miricle happens right before your eyes & nature takes your breath away & glows your soul, like it did on this particular day!
Looking out my front window, I was blessed to see this beautiful sunset! Wishing all of you a magical sunset too my friends =)
However, true beauty is in the way you hold yourself. It's how you treat people. The way you love. It's self acceptance. Beauty is in your soul.
