The stained glass panel is set into the facade of a mausoleum or tomb chapel inside Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. The image depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, with a haloed Mary ascending heavenward, surrounded by cherubs on clouds — classic 19th century funerary religious art.
The green ironwork gate/door in the foreground is the door of the tomb itself, and I shot through the ornate cutouts in the metalwork, which frames the stained glass beautifully.
The reflection — the glass of the stained glass panel is catching a reflection of the trees and sky behind, which blends into the lighter background areas of the stained glass itself, making the sky within the image and the real sky almost seamless.
The photographic effect is a beautiful layered composition — the blurred green ironwork as a natural vignette, the vivid stained glass as the subject, the stone angel sculpture below, and the real trees bleeding into the artwork.
It reads almost like a double exposure.
I feel it's a genuinely lovely capture — the accidental reflection actually adds to the ethereal, otherworldly feeling perfectly suited to a cemetery setting.
