Buffalo Roundup 2020, Custer State Park, South Dakota

When dreams come true, it might be the case you find yourself in one of the most epic sceneries the Alps have to offer. We felt like being in an unreal world when all the stars aligned and we got the famous Matterhorn being reflected on the mirror-plane lake. Not enough of that, the color texture of the cone-shaped granite rock mimicked the peak's early morning glow in a symmetry and equilibrium, you almost can't believe. This has been witnessed by a group of very nice fellows from Australia, Canada, Israel and Italy. Thanks to @torygrimaldi, @vladimir.kogan and @dw_photo_ca for the nice company!

... and a tree, of course. It is called "traufgaenge" at the Swabian Alb which is a pretty place to hike and walk. Every 10 minutes you have a different view to the castle and if you like, you can walk all the way around. lovely...

Bats leaving the Orient Mine.

.

The Orient Mine, active from 1880 through 1932, was the largest producer of iron ore in Colorado, having produced about two million tons of limonite. It is believed that the name Orient came from the Old French word meaning east (rising sun), since the mine is located on the eastern side of the San Luis Valley. (There is no evidence of Chinese or other Asian miners working in the mine.) The Orient Mine had two associated town sites - one in the upper area in the early years and the lower town site which was active in the early 1900's. Today nothing remains of the towns except stories and a few foundations.

.

At its peak, the town of Orient had a population of more than 400, supporting a library, barber shop, school, 2 restaurants, a boarding house for 300, a saloon, a milling company and other small businesses including a supplier of work clothing.

.

Today, the Orient Mine is significant because for the last forty years or so it has been home to nearly 250,000 migratory bats. Bats were first documented at the Orient Mine in 1967 and have played a vital role in the chemical- and pesticide-free agriculture of the Valley. The Orient Mine is a designated Colorado Natural Area and Colorado Division of Wildlife Watchable Wildlife site.

I was eight or nine years old, when I was first inside the Rhone glacier. Twenty five years later I had another chance to explore the narrow corridors there. Nevertheless, they were not exactly the same. Due to the ongoing glacial recession, the responsible have to build new corridors, year by year.

As promised, the return to the Swiss Alps did not take long. On this trip in the middle of July I came with two friends of mine. We would stay four days in this extraordinarily beautiful area, hike a few kilometres, cover some metres of altitude and spend the nights in our tents.

Abandoned boat in Blackwater Sound, Key Largo, Florida.

Those big glaciers are much impressive and true giants of the Alps. Like a living organism they wind themselves, finding their way down to the valley. The Gorner glacier is almost 13 km long and covers an area of more than 50 km² [1]. The picture was taken from Schwarzsee (2583 m) above Zermatt.
