I used to go hiking/camping as a teen and young adult. Now I am middle-aged and am a disabled veteran. I haven't hiked/camped in years. My fiancee and I started training for the Hike 100 Challenge in the late spring by hiking a local regional park to start. Then we hiked several state parks which included Maplewood and Jay Cooke State Park's in Minnesota. There are several miles of the North Country Scenic Trail that run through both parks. We racked up 27.3 miles of our 100 miles during our training. We left on August 26 for 10-days on the Superior Hiking Trail/ North Country Scenic Trail. We started at the Lake County Demonstration Forest. We hiked to the Baptism River Bridge in Tettegouche State Park with a detour into Silver Bay for pizza at Jimmies. Our last night we camped at the state park to use the facilities. Before leaving Sunday, we hiked back up the Drain Pipe to Raven Rock and back to Baptism River to make sure we completed enough miles for the challenge. We ended up with 112.9 miles.
Finally back in SLC! A long week of traveling, and glad to be home. Saw the planes lined up through the window and stopped for a second to look.

The setting sun shines on the earth, the air is fresh, and the mountains in the distance are picturesque. It is a good time to return to nature, breathe fresh air, and feel the simplicity and tranquility of life in the busy daily life.

My husband and I endeavored a thru-hike on the SHT. While I became ill and had to leave the trail one day and 10 miles short of our goal, Bill went back a few days later to "earn" his true thru-hike "merit badge". We spent 31 days on the trail; 33 days on the journey. We did an unconventional flip-flop hike (hiking both ends toward the middle). Had an AMAZING time; met several trail angels (scored some plums, pizza, Fig Newtons and info on a snowmobile shelter that saved us in a T-storm!), and have adventures to tell. Saw a Pine Martin, Red Fox, deer, and countless grouse; wolf tracks and moose poop. ;) Filtered water from a mud puddle, bathed in a cold creek, and delighted in a flicker of the northern lights. It was tough and exhausting for our (older) bodies, but worth every step!
I began my challenge on January 5th (my 65th birthday) retracing part of the Shoe Year's Day Hike in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area close to our home in Holland, Michigan. In July my hiking buddy and I did the Jordan River Pathway. Two hikes in August coincided with my dog Maddy's rehab appointments in Rockford, MI. Milo (Maddy's brother) and I hiked the White Pine Trail and the Rogue River State Game Area section (too much gun fire!), I decided to finish the 100 mile challenge by completing the 42.4 mile Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore trail to challenge my hiking legs and my backcountry camping abilities. Trying to stay local, the gap was filled with the Battle Creek section and the Paul Henry trail in Middleville. 1 day - hiking in the rain, 1/2 day at the Munising Urgent Care Center for a hatchet accident to my thumb, 2 days of cloudless skies, and the last day of muddy trail near Munising Falls and I was done!!! Great goal, great memories, great challenge. Thank you!
