Like most of Galapagos, Sombrero Chino (Chinese Hat) is volcanic in origin. The exploration path starts with a gorgeous beach, bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs and marine iguanas. The path goes past a colony of endemic Galapagos sea lions before passing a lava field: look for the lava cactus growing in the cracks. On the beach, keep your eyes open for the American Oystercatcher, a wading bird with a distinctive orange beak. On the trail, you may see lava lizards.
This is a detail from the Monument to the Discoveries which is a memorial statue dedicated to Henry the Navigator. It stands in the harbor of Lisbon, Portugal near the mouth of the Tagus River. It was permanently erected in 1960 to honor Prince Henry who led the voyages of discovery into the New World in the 15th Century. The Portuguese were legendary mariners & explorers. One can barely imagine risking the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean in wooden boats powered only by sails.
"Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go."

When it originally opened in 1914, the Power Station was one of the most advanced power centers in all of Europe, however it will likely be better remembered for its ornate Art Deco architecture than its technological wonder. Parts are still used, except the old transformer buildings and the Art Deco control room.
Ruins of a cellulose factory in Lower Silesia/Poland. The plant was built in 1911. It produced sulphite cellulose for the production of paper.

A reflecting pool-fountain transforms to skating ring in winter time, probably the best idea anybody had in City Hall. The reflecting/ skating pool was part of original design in 1962 (Viljo Revell). In recent years some ideas to 'improve' or transform the public square were not too successful. The best idea in years was to install the now iconic 'Toronto' sign, which was only supposed to be temporary. Of course, that was not original idea, Hollywood may have been first (1923).
