Gavin, just before we packed up our campsite and piled into the van for our 12+ hour drive back.
I'm currently have an existential film crisis. I love film photos so much but I am perpetually betrayed by my own. This batch is (for the most part) very dark and unsharp (even if there is an issue with my 1.4/me in regards to my 1.4, it supersedes even that) and there are barely any I like. I am going to send my next batch of film to my Michigan store and if I don't like those I'm going to stop using film. If I like them then I will only use them and I will protest the local store because I hate them. When I feel emotions, I feel them strongly and I HATE that store with a flaming passion.
This scanner is making me crop my photos and I don't like that.
This month is so packed with school stuff (and other miserable compulsories) but also potential photography activities and I can't figure out how to spend my time! I'd chose photography and other fun stuff, naturally, except for the fact that I've done that for the rest of the semester and I actually need to pass these miserable classes. Why can't all my classes be like Spider Biology and Classics and Fantasty!? I'm really feeling the "life is short/carpe diem" message but school goes against that and I haven't been able to resolve this. I have so many books to read and photos to see and take and edit and shows and movies to watch and things to do and places to explore and AH.
I've rediscovered the joy of This Providence. Here, have some!

Fictional body horror media awoke existential fascination and anxieties regarding mortality within me. These emotions are translated into narratives in my paintings.
The horror genre shows the event of death by excessive violence and bodily destruction and my work explores both of these themes. My comprises self-portraits which combine my love for horror with my own image but also reflect myself and humanity’s inevitable end. Much like death itself this body of work is neutral, I don’t intend for the viewer to feel anything in particular. Instead, this work is a reflection of my emotions and an invitation for the viewer to contemplate theirs.
Historical and contemporary body horror media has resulted in unease over our own bodies. My intention with this project is to explore this discomfort and the bluntness of death and decomposition. Our bodies will eventually betray ourselves through their inability to avoid death and this is the cruel fact of life my paintings represent.

My view is that there are three modes of being. I hold that we can directly observe them in elements of whatever is at any time before the mind in any way. They are the being of positive qualitative possibility, the being of actual fact, and the being of law that will govern facts in the future.
Let us begin with considering actuality, and try to make out just what it consists in. If I ask you what the actuality of an event consists in, you will tell me that it consists in its happening then and there. The specifications then and there involve all its relations to other existents. The actuality of the event seems to be in its relations to the universe of existents. A court may issue injunctions and judgments against me & I care not a snap of my finger for them & I may think them idle paper.
My second daughter - She was three weeks old here and likely marveling at color/patterns once she could focus.
The pillow she's lying on is on my stomach, so there wasn't much room to position the shot, it was just lucky that it came out OK with the sun coming in through a gap in the blinds.
Now for Thirdness. Five minutes of our waking life will hardly pass without our making some kind of prediction; and in the majority of cases these predictions are fulfilled in the event. Yet a prediction is essentially of a general nature, and cannot ever be completely fulfilled. To say that a prediction has a decided tendency to be fulfilled, is to say that the future events are in a measure really governed by a law. If a pair of dice turns up sixes five... times running, that is a mere uniformity. The dice might happen fortuitously to turn up sixes a thousand times running. But that would not afford the slightest security for a prediction that they would turn up sixes the next time. If the prediction has a tendency to be fulfilled, it must be that future events have a tendency to conform to a general rule. ‘Oh,’ but say the Nominalists, ‘this general rule is nothing but a mere word or complex of words!’

Best known for his innovative, award-winning 2005 short Uso Justo, Coleman Miller has been making films and videos for over 25 years utilizing a variety of techniques including found footage, collage, and various mash-up experimentation based on whatever tools he’s had at his disposal. We are happy to present this long-overdue overview of Miller’s work.
“It always starts with Play. Especially working with found footage – it’s like being a five year old in a brand new sandbox. Or playing with blocks. You start mixing and matching things… just to see. Then maybe a leaf blows into the sandbox and you incorporate that. Soon you have a foundation and it all flows from there. The hardest part is getting up from the sandbox and saying ‘Done’. But really, any sandbox will do.” – Coleman Miller

Step Off A Ten-Foot Platform With Your Clothes On, by Coleman Miller

While working as a printer in a film lab in San Francisco Miller, was able to use equipment most filmmakers didn’t even know existed. Obtaining special use of a continuous contact printer, which he used every day, was particularly inspiring. By manipulating found footage he was able to create a body of work that turned the medium of film back around on itself. Miller was able to invent many new printing techniques, which he continues to incorporate today. During these years, the film lab became a ten-year festival of experimentation and from it came the most consistent additions to his body of work.
In Step Off A Ten Foot Platform With Your Clothes On, Miller expounds his foray into found and experimental film by compiling which had been, until Uso Justo, his most successful and critically acclaimed work. Produced while Miller was still working for a San Francisco based film printer, once again we see Miller playing with materials directly available to him. During this time time, he was turning film around on itself in a purely visual way – showing the sprocketholes, edge numbers, dirt and frame lines, etc. Again we’ll see the use of contrapuntal sound in order to punctuate dramatic and often playful images. Miller also takes the time to examine what lies in between or, more appropriately, just hidden aspects of film. Long stretches of dirty black or white leader touched with color, usually an annoyance to the traditional viewer, display an entertaining dance of schmutz that is allowed to take the focus. Platform briefly introduces it’s visual styles and slowly allows them to progress into a spirited visual mash-up of his techniques. Ordinary images sifted thru Miller’s mental machine, like the little dog in the film, yanked to unreasonable visual extremes.Platform would go on to win numerous festival awards, be screened at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival, and become culled material for commercial exhibitions such as the 1992 MTV Music Video Awards and the opening title sequences for MTV’s 1991 television show The Big Picture.
Fixated Whereabouts by Coleman Miller

Deeply inspired by Bruce Conner’s Take The 5:10 To Dreamland, Miller’s initial dabbling into filmmaking shows natural mastery of his available tools. Shot simply with a super 8 camera, Miller’s exercises began to define the directions of his current work. What, upon first glance, appears to be the tired student project that pervade the novice class of experimental film, a deeper inspection reveals Miller’s creation of a bizarre and surreal world just around the corner from your house. Contrapuntal sound reverses commonly seen images, and simple experimental devices distract the viewer into provocative thought. San Francisco’s skyline watched out a window appeals to a strange unfulfilled longing, so it shouldn’t surprise the reader that the scene is shot from a postcard found in Miller’s hotel, years before he ever took up residence there. Please note the first display of existential angst. Every ordinary event, every car-ride or ballgame take on an otherworldly effect. An escalator, found sound, a mirror… all objects often overlooked, suddenly presented turned on their own ear. Fixated Whereabouts means what it suggests as Miller’s universe stops at a place, records what it sees, interprets the material with a clash of the surreal, and then punctuates with moments of fright and wonder.

The larf of What Gives introduces Miller’s playfulness, foreshadowing a common theme throughout the future of Miller’s work. Surreal, experimental slapstick executed to perfection. Again produced at Monaco Lab, with materials and tools at his disposal.
Kirk, we hardly knew ya by Coleman Miller
USA, 1999, 12 minutes, 16 mm
Produced as an installation piece, ‘Kirk’ is the most basic of Miller’s work, never intended to be screened beyond that environment. But as we watch it today, the subject matter retains relevance. The pressures of business and technology barked out by the enigmatic Shatner, transposed with the inane pursuits of a culture that can’t understand why it should be bombed. Miller’s statement, though simple and cheaply produced, retains its’ humor in the light of such damning circumstance.
Take The L by Coleman Miller

Using his 8 year-old, consumer level 1-chip digital video camera, Miller dials in the controls to capture a frighteningly sharp commuter train trip. Using a technique available to almost any beginner level FCP user, he transcends the viewer into a widely familiar but deeply disorienting and hypnotic landscape. In watching the center, the viewer can only imagine the thrilling moment when, as a child, they first held a kaleidoscope up to the light. But looking out toward the edges, Take The L will subtly reveal it’s common subject matter and remind the viewer of its’ reality. Once again Miller takes the most mundane of activities and develops it into an explosion of kaleidoscopic visual beauty and playfulness. Miller once again delivers stimulating execution of the most basic technique driven to its’ edges.

Miller’s first narrative creation is like nothing you have seen before. Or since. Uso Justo (roughly translated: “Fair Use”) is restructured completely from an obscure 1959 Mexican film. Miller reaches deep into this black and white melodrama with both hands and turns it inside out. When an experimental filmmaker arrives to shoot his next film in the fictional town of Uso Justo, things start getting strange. The townsfolk are both thrilled and confused by the sudden arrival of this mysterious artist. As the invisible filmmaker pulls the strings, the unfolding story proves to be existential and hilarious, intelligent and stupid.

I put this together when my computer was acting like shit and crashing frequently. Coincidentally this was right after i had gone to my grandfather’s house and picked up a bunch of old metal sections of heating pipes, elbow joints, washer’s, nut’s, bolts, handtools, etc. So when the computer would crash i would go out on the back porch to my buckets of metal and try twisting up some sculpture. And i began to realize how much I liked working with my hands again. It was such a breath of fresh air – much better i thought than staring at a monitor. At the same time i would be watching and rewatching old 16mm educational films and noticing how almost every one of these had a close shot of hands.
The human hand. What a great tool. And taken for granted.
Coleman Miller (Creator/Writer/Director/Producer/Editor) has been making films for over 20 years. His films have won numerous awards on the festival circuit and his film Step Off a Ten Foot Platform With Your Clothes On screened at Sundance in 1991. He received his bachelor’s degree in film production from Southern Illinois University in 1983. He was recently awarded the 2005 IFP-MSP/McKnight Artist Fellowship for Filmmakers, received a Jerome Media Grant in 2001 and a Film Arts Foundation Grant in 1990.

It’s a legal dilemma wrapped up in a language debate, tinged with electoral politics, and an existential question about what kind of country Canada is.

On the same day it announced the launch of a search for an Ontario jurist to take the seat of soon-to-retire Justice Rosalie Abella, the Liberal government said it plans to put into law Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s practice of appointing only “functionally bilingual” judges to the top court.
It was a campaign commitment, and with a whiff of a possible election in the air, Trudeau is ticking off political boxes.
But the “how?” he proposes to do it is less clear. And advocates of greater diversity say mandatory bilingualism will block many qualified candidates from being elevated to the Supreme Court.
Six months ago the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers wrote an open letter to the Trudeau government urging swifter action to address systemic anti-Black racism throughout the justice system and noting “only three Black judges have been appointed under the Trudeau-led government.”

Raphael Tachie, senior counsel for TD Financial Group and president of the association, in an interview said the top court should be a bilingual institution but the requirement “that each individual justice be bilingual disqualifies a lot of really qualified Black and racialized jurists that we think would be great appointments to the court.”

Many practising outside Quebec have not been exposed to French language or training, or “come to the language later on in life and might not always be as proficient as they ought to be. That’s the challenge,” he said, adding “I think the court can compensate for that,” using translators and interpretation. He urges Trudeau to look beyond the Ontario Court of Appeal to lower courts and the bar: “You need to elevate your talent,” he said.
Brad Regehr, the first Indigenous lawyer to lead the Canadian Bar Association, says the same is true for Indigenous candidates who “already face systemic barriers in terms of achieving that proficiency in official languages.” Regehr says it’s time for Trudeau to name someone who is Black, Indigenous or a person of colour to the Supreme Court.
A member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation in Saskatchewan who lives and practices law in Winnipeg, Regehr argues that Canada is “not just a bijuridical state where there’s English common law and French civil law; Indigenous legal traditions form part of the law of Canada and that seems to be forgotten or ignored and the only way you’re going to get any perspective on that is by having an Indigenous judge.”https://joinlive77.com
Both want Trudeau to walk his progressive talk, and do something concrete to promote reconciliation and diversity.
Right now, the Supreme Court of Canada is the only federally-appointed court that is exempt from the Official Languages Act which says all Canadians must be able to access services in federal courts in either English or French. In other words, it puts the onus on federal courts to provide bilingual services, not on prime ministers to appoint only bilingual judges. The Liberals propose to drop the exception.
Trudeau does not intend to change the Supreme Court Act which sets out the eligibility criteria for judicial appointments to the top court.
Rachel Rappaport, a spokesperson for Justice Minister David Lametti, says the bilingual services exemption for the Supreme Court “was never intended to be permanent.”

In 1988 Conservative justice minister Ray Hnatyshyn said during debates on the Official Languages Act that, “It is probably in the national interest at this time that we not put any constraints on the court in the way in which it does its business.” He said that “until we reach a more developed stage of bilingualism across the country,” governments should be able pick from among “the best people who are unilingual, in both languages.”
There have been at least 10 bills introduced over the past 10 years to require top judges be bilingual, according to Jean-Christophe Bédard-Rubin, a doctoral candidate at University of Toronto’s faculty of law. None has passed.
But unilingualism has had an impact, says Bédard-Rubin, who with a colleague has done the first empirical study of the impact of unilingualism on the Supreme Court’s operations. They analyzed cases from 1969 to 2013. In an interview, he said, “There tends to be a linguistic separation of labour at the Supreme Court.”

Weathervane Playhouse in Akron, Ohio, presents Edward Albee's "A Delicate Balance" -- live on stage from March 26 to April 12, 2015.
Directed by Craig Joseph, Edward Albee's "A Delicate Balance" is a dark comedy in which the carefully controlled existence of two complacent suburbanites is forever shattered by their family and friends over the course of one eventful weekend.
Describing his play 30 years after its first production, the playwright Edward Albee wrote in 1996 that it concerns “the rigidity and ultimate paralysis which afflicts those who settle in too easily, waking up one day to discover that all of the choices they have avoided no longer give them any freedom of choice, and that what choices they do have left are beside the point.”
When the play begins, we meet Agnes and Tobias, a perfectly normal, upper middle-class married couple. With a cushion of wealth to protect them, they would appear to have the best of everything: a beautifully furnished home, the finest china and the most tasteful furniture.But the underpinnings of such a comfortable life have begun to come loose. Live-in sister-in-law Claire drinks too much and delights in trading caustic remarks with Agnes and Tobias. And Julia, Agnes and Tobias’s 36-year-old daughter, has returned home after her fourth failed marriage, a lost child seeking the comfort of hearth and home.
The sudden appearance of Harry and Edna, the neighbors and best friends of Agnes and Tobias, further threatens the rigidly restrained order of suburban splendor. Harry and Edna insist that they cannot return to their own home, due to an undefined “terror” that has gripped them. With their equilibrium thus upended, can Agnes and Tobias continue to maintain their “delicate balance?”

Meit Kamdar Avlanii was born in Mumbai in a Gujarati business family that had roots in Yemen. Textiles and cross-border trading was the mainstay of their business. Meit joined the family business at the age of 21 years in Uganda. After a few years, he faced existential angst when he asked himself if he was happy doing what he did and began contemplating on the bigger purpose in his life. Here’s what he revealed about his exciting journey.
How It All Began
The seed of designing was subconsciously planted in my mind at a very young age. My curiosity was aroused when I accompanied my mother one day to our family jeweller in Bandra. She wanted a special bespoke design and I watched wide-eyed as the jeweller spent time sketching, and during subsequent visits, saw the sketch turn into a captivating piece of jewellery. Then, I was oblivious that this instance would play a huge role in the next chapter of my life … but in hindsight, that steered me to my present vocation.
Cut to 2014, I discovered my designing abilities by chance when trying my hand at Photoshop. I had designed a few jewellery pieces for a girl who I wanted to marry. Unfortunately, the relationship did not progress further.
However, our family jeweller was impressed with the designs and with my permission submitted it for a jewellery design contest. The design was shortlisted and won an award.
Existential Crisis
Upset with the way things turned out in my personal life, I had a strong urge to find the purpose of my life. I sought advice from my family and started reading books on spirituality and got hooked on Bhagvad Gita. That’s when I got clarity. The words of wisdom that brought about a change in my thinking and have stayed with me ever since: Choose your work that is your passion, make that passion your life’s purpose and you will never have to work even for a day in your life.
While I accidentally discovered my latent design skills, I decided to hone my skills. I moved to GIA, London to study more about diamonds and gemstones, and post that I acquired a Masters degree in Luxury Brand Management from Regents University.
At Regents, I met Dr. Eric Chan, professor and life coach, who changed my life completely. He helped me identify my strengths, weaknesses and helped me find my calling in life.
I had made up my mind to pursue a career in jewellery, and returned to India and joined the Indian Academy of Jewelry and Design (IAJD).
Birth of the Brand
Armed with knowledge on the manufacturing side, I opened a retail outlet at an upscale location in Kala Ghoda, Mumbai, in January 2020.
Within three months all activities came to a standstill as the entire country was under a lockdown. I was stressed and decided to permanently close down the store.
Work from home became a way of life, and from my premier residential apartment in Lower Parel, Mumbai, I started reaching out to potential consumers for private viewing. I sent out personal invitations to each of the 300-plus residents and their relatives living within a radius of two kilometres. To my good luck, each of the invitees who attended the viewing, went home buying a piece of my jewellery. This boosted my confidence and in order to widen the customer base and generate volumes, I invested in an atelier on the same floor where I live.
