I set up for a long exposure at blue hour and held the shutter open long enough to let passing headlights and taillights smear into ribbons of white and red across the foreground — a deliberate way of writing the city's motion into a frame whose subject is otherwise monumental stillness. That tension is the whole picture: the opera house stands fixed and ceremonial while Van Ness Avenue streams past it, the traffic reduced to pure light. Holding the camera dead-on and level keeps the colonnade's verticals true, presenting the facade the way its architects intended it to be read — frontally, symmetrically, as civic theater.
Opened in 1932 to Arthur Brown Jr.'s design, this is one of the last great American Beaux-Arts public buildings, the City Beautiful idiom carried into the Depression. A monumental arcade of paired columns screens a recessed loggia, with arched windows behind and a rusticated ground-floor base punched by glowing arched portals. The magenta wash flooding the upper colonnade is event lighting — a saturated theatrical pink that plays beautifully against the deep cobalt of the dusk sky and the warm tungsten gold spilling from the lobby below. Three color temperatures, one frame: blue evening, pink spectacle, gold interior.

This night inside Andover Country Club in Andover Massachusetts an extravagant Bat Mitzvah was being held. There were 8 ft tall Glow Towers, custom entrance way, Hollywood style red carpet, red rope stanchions, feather centerpieces, elegant draping and event lighting
As I followup to yesterdays post, this is more of an overall room shot. Table centerpieces were pinspotted, perimeter decor was uplit, and hand painted arch panels were front lit. After the guests left the main room, the party continued until 3AM out by the pool. When the guests really enjoy the event, it feels great to be part of the team that helped make the magic evening happen!
