This was the space, next to the National Museum of the Press, chosen for a public event, the release of a Book of Cartoons, by the portuguese Cartoonist Jorge Braga.
This place could not have been better chosen, considering the thematic affinities between the collections of this Museum, International Cartoons, Porto Cartoon, and the launching of one more book of cartoons "Teorias do Nada".
The fact of being a roofless house physically connected to the museum, but in the exterior, created the ideal conditions for a public event during this time of pandemic. And when I saw the photogenic roofless building and the shadows I overjoyed...

The best known kind of event horizon is that of black holes - one of the earliest fruits of Einstein's General relativity, due to brilliant work by Karl Schwarzschild in 1916. A black hole's horizon is a boundary in spacetime from which no signal or radiation can come out to affect an external observer. Put in a simpler way: no light, radio waves, or any other kind of radiation emitted from inside the event horizon can ever hope to escape from it, because in that region the black hole's gravitational pull is so strong that not even light (travelling at the craziest possible speed in the whole universe) can overcome it. So the event horizon is what makes the hole, well... black. Incidentally, I would slightly prefer something like "not-even-black hole", but I suspect that this term would not stick ;-)*
Of course, this narrative is not about black holes - the direct observation of the immediate environment of a black hole with angular resolution comparable to the event horizon is one of the Holy Grails of astrophysics - but I felt the need to attempt and clarify a bit what the concept means.
I was at Cala de la Vinyeta in Calella, as in my previous upload, Primeval light. No black holes there, but a pretty unremarkable, middle-aged yellow star some 4.5 billion years old - yet our most precious friend for a whole lot of reasons.
I was fairly sure that the sun was still below the horizon, as my watch suggested; but the cliff enclosing the Eastern end of the cove hid the very point of the horizon from which the Sun would have risen. I perceived that looming bulk of rosy rocks - would-be rosy sand in a handful of centuries - as an event horizon effectively keeping out of my view the focal point of the approaching sunrise. I decided not to mind the thing - who knows, I thought, sometimes one discover unexpected treasures just out of the trodden track... Moreover, I would not waste precious minutes in tentatively looking for another pov - since, I knew, there are further rocks beyond the cliff.
As the radiance beyond the cliff was growing more and more in the cloudless sky, I began to feel thankful to my personal event horizon for shading my camera from the intense glow :-) So I happily took my exposure bracketing to be processed with luminosity masks and went on enjoying my photographic session.
I am not happy with some parts of this shot - mainly the sea - but I like the glorious glow beyond the cliff, hinting to the hidden sunrise without revealing it. This is the common thread of this series from Cala de la Vinyeta.
* Hope that Hawking will forgive my omission of the radiation named after him, which, however, is produced at the event horizon - so effectively endowing black holes with a temperature, if not with colour.

This started simply enough: the idea that an orange Gerbera Daisy with a black center and a Prairie Smoke wildflower seed bent into a semi-circle on the surface of water might appear – if properly aligned – like the accretion disc around the event horizon of a Black Hole. Or maybe, the artistic depiction of such a thing.
Many attempts were made. It didn’t quite turn out that way; in the end, it became its own thing. I still believe it lives up to the name “Event Horizon” which was the original inspiration.
This image was tricky to set up, specifically to get a near-perfect semi-circle from the Prairie Smoke wildflower seed. Not all seeds bend that way, and it was clamped just below the surface of the water hoping to achieve this geometry. Here’s the “behind-the-scenes” image, this time annotated: donkom.ca/bts/_1090420-annotated.jpg . We’ve got a classic refraction/reflection setup here with the Lumix S1R in high-resolution mode and excessive cropping, no focus stacking required to do amazing macro work with this camera and kit lens! Lighting provided by the Platypod Max Macro bundle, currently available at a discount here: platypod.com/tripods/max-macro-bundle . “Third hand tools” readily available on eBay or Amazon. If you happen to be driving by an industrial park in Calgary AB, you might find some puffy balls of seeds along a fence line. That’s where I found these seeds.
The hardest part about water droplet refraction photography isn’t the photography. The bigger challenge is creating a subject worth photographing. When I teach workshops in this area (2020 dates are now posted, by the way: www.donkom.ca/product/macro-photography-workshops/ ), the photographic process is easily learned by everyone, almost like a simple magic trick. Beyond understanding lighting angles, alignment and focus, it becomes realized that you’re an artist on two fronts – first a droplet sculptor, then a photographer.
There were many attempts at this. Some I didn’t quite like because the droplets didn’t behave perfect, the symmetry was off, the seed wasn’t perfectly flat to the focal plane, there was some movement, etc. You’d be surprised how quickly these seeds move – they animate when wet, and even while the “spine” is clamped, the hairs will still move, constantly changing. For fun, here’s a four-up of my attempts prior to getting this one to work. Not bad images, but they didn’t meet what I had envisioned: donkom.ca/bts/event-horizon-attempts.jpg . Those were just the attempts I cared to take a closer look at. Each of them has merit – and some features like distorted reflections that I find valuable. Maybe it even makes a good image on its own, showing four views of the same concept.
