This location at the beach of the province North Holland was on my list already for long time. So a few weeks ago I headed for it. But during the one hour drive to it the sky became fully clouded so my hope for a beautiful sunset evaporated. While taking (long exposure) pictures there all at a sudden and just ten minutes before sunset, the sun dropped from behind the clouds and set the sky on fire. Petten, 2019.

The poles at the beach of Petten are a monument, remembering the old village of Petten which was flooded away by the sea two times over about 600 years. The monument consists of 160 poles, forming the foundations of ten houses and a church.

A little understanding of the physics of cloud formation underscores the complexity of the atmosphere and sheds light on why predicting weather for more than a few days is such a challenge.
Six types of clouds you can see and how they can help you understand the weather.
1) Cumulus clouds - On a sunny day, rays warm the earth, which heats the air located directly above it. The heated air rises upward due to convection and forms cumulus clouds. These “good weather” clouds are like cotton wool. If you look at the sky filled with cumulus clouds, you can see that they have a flat bottom, located at the same level for all clouds. At this altitude, air rising from ground level cools down to the dew point. It usually doesn't rain from cumulus clouds, which means the weather will be good.
2) Cumulonimbus clouds.
Small cumulus clouds do not rain, but if they grow and grow in height, it is a sign that heavy rain is coming soon. This often happens in summer when morning cumulus clouds turn into cumulonimbus during the day. Cumulonimbus clouds often have a flat top. Air convection occurs inside such a cloud, and it gradually cools until it reaches the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere. At this moment, it loses its buoyancy and can no longer rise higher. Instead, it spreads out to the sides, forming the characteristic anvil shape.
3) Cirrus clouds form in very high layers of the atmosphere. They are smoky because they are composed entirely of ice crystals falling in the atmosphere. When cirrus clouds are carried by winds moving at different speeds, they take on a characteristic curved shape. And only at very high altitudes or at high latitudes, cirrus clouds give out rain that reaches the ground.
4) Stratus Clouds - A low-lying, continuous cloud sheet that covers the sky. Stratus clouds are formed by slowly rising air or gentle winds that cover the cold land or sea surface with moist air. Stratus clouds are thin, therefore, despite the gloomy picture, it is unlikely to rain from them, a little drizzle at most. Stratus clouds are identical to fog, so if you've ever walked in a mountainous area on a foggy day, you've been inside a cloud.
5) Lenticular clouds. Smooth and lenticular lenticular clouds form when air is blown up and over a mountain range, and as it travels over a mountain, the air descends to its previous level. At this time, it heats up and the cloud evaporates. But it can slip further, as a result of which the air rises again and forms another lenticular cloud. This can result in a chain of clouds extending far beyond the mountain range. The interaction of wind with mountains and other surface features is one of the many details that must be taken into account in computer simulations to obtain accurate weather predictions.
6) Kelvin - Helmholtz like a breaking ocean wave. When air masses at different heights move horizontally at different speeds, their state becomes unstable. The boundary between the air masses begins to ripple and form large waves, such clouds are quite rare.

Fog can be considered a cloud at ground level. The processes forming it, however, are usually different from those that form clouds.
Like clouds, fog is made up of condensed water droplets which are the result of the air being cooled to the point (actually, the dewpoint) where it can no longer hold all of the water vapor it contains.
For clouds, that cooling is almost always the result of rising of air, which cools from expansion. But for fog, which occurs next to the ground, there are usually other reasons for this cooling.
For instance, rain can cool and moisten the air near the surface until fog forms.
Or, as is more often the case, infrared cooling of a cloud-free, humid air mass at night can lead to fog formation - this is called "radiation fog". Radiation fog is most common in the fall, when nights get longer, airmasses begin to cool, and land and water surfaces that have warmed up during the summer are still evaporating alot of water into the atmosphere.
Finally, a warm moist air mass blowing over a cold surface (usually snow or ice, or over a cold ocean surface) can also cause fog to form-this is called "advection fog

Number 5 was about an hour and 40 minutes behind at Fort Morgan today. I was on my heels trying to work this all time favorite spot in full flock this year I’ve favored since I was in my 20’s. Sparkling snow in that perfect angle this time of year and add the intensity of a heavy flock of mountain spring time powder and it’s a match made in rail-fan heaven. In and out sun pockets; the sun glistens off the fresh 10” of snow. Fast evaporating snow is condensing into clouds along the Flatirons and here in Coal Creek Canyon, sauce for the goose.

Salt evaporation ponds, also called salt pans, are shallow artificial ponds designed to produce salts from sea water. The seawater is fed into large ponds and water is drawn out through natural evaporation which allows the salt to be subsequently harvested.

Wildfires occur when all the necessary elements of a fire triforce come together in a susceptible area: an ignition source is brought into contact with a combustible material such as vegetation that is subjected to enough heat and has an adequate supply of oxygen from the ambient air. A high moisture content usually prevents ignition and slows propagation, because higher temperatures are needed to evaporate any water in the material and heat the material to its fire point. Dense forests usually provide more shade, resulting in lower ambient temperatures and greater humidity, and are therefore less susceptible to wildfires. Less dense material such as grasses and leaves are easier to ignite because they contain less water than denser material such as branches and trunks. Plants continuously lose water by evapotranspiration, but water loss is usually balanced by water absorbed from the soil, humidity, or rain. When this balance is not maintained, plants dry out and are therefore more flammable, often as a consequence of droughts.

A salt lake and water evaporating around it. Taken on a flight between Sydney and Darwin, Australia, at about 35,000ft, somewhere either in Queensland or the Northern Territory.
Stansbury Island is the second largest island within the Great Salt Lake. Its desert landscape is often overlooked, and it's hardly visited; which I am happy about :-)
The deep blue water at the bottom is a salt pool, on the left, you can see a large section of salt that will soon become visible as the water evaporates.

A very busy spot very early in the morning. Each boat takes a turn up close to the lava. No the big boat is not on fire.
This one is from the salt evaporation ponds at Maras, Peru, approximately 40km north of Cusco. There are more than 5,000 of these ponds. According to Wiki:
"Since pre-Inca times, salt has been obtained in Maras by evaporating salty water from a local subterranean stream. The highly salty water emerges at a spring, a natural outlet of the underground stream. The flow is directed into an intricate system of tiny channels constructed so that the water runs gradually down onto the several hundred ancient terraced ponds. Almost all the ponds are less than four meters square in area, and none exceeds thirty centimeters in depth. All are necessarily shaped into polygons with the flow of water carefully controlled and monitored by the workers. The altitude of the ponds slowly decreases, so that the water may flow through the myriad branches of the water-supply channels and be introduced slowly through a notch in one sidewall of each pond."

As the lake water evaporates, the various creatures calling it home have to adapt. This Bullfrog sits in the limited shade on a hot morning. It will soon commence eating and interacting with and calling out to its fellow Bullfrogs, in the low groan that is incorporated in the Québécois French name Ouaouaron. The name is borrowed from the Wendat, also known as Wendat Huron, an indigenous nation spreading at times from Quebec City (where they continue to live on an urban territory) to as far west as Lake Simcoe.
The heat and dryness this summer has exposed more lake bottom, and driven frogs and fish into pools - where, needless to say, they are more vulnerable to the many Herons and Egrets that hunt on the Lake.

For me it is – and I think it's the same for most of you – every time I stand, walk, run on a wide beach, feel the wind, smell the salt and hear the sound of the waves ...
And you probably also know this: "Clouds arise because the sun evaporates water from seas, lakes, rivers or streams and rises as water vapor. It's colder up there and the water vapor then turns into tiny water droplets that are so light that they can float." Smart sentences ... Sometimes you just want to float away with the elements :-)

Especially in autumn, when hardly any flowers are to be expected on our cacti, the Lithops come into their own, for then most species of this genus flower.
But one plant from this family shows its flower, predominantly already at the end of May to the beginning of June, the species pseudotruncatella. That is why I would like to introduce it today.
Lithops comes from Latin and means "stone", which gave it the colloquial name "living stone".
In nature, they have good chances of survival due to their camouflaged appearance.
The shape and grain came about through natural selection (convergence), an adaptation to the environment in stony terrain. This change is due to animals searching for something moist and nutritious in the dry areas. The solution, only those who are poorly seen survive. And besides, due to its shallow entry into the ground, this plant has hardly any evaporation surface, which protects it from the scorching sun.

Micheldever is a village and civil parish in Hampshire, England, situated 6 miles (10 km) north of Winchester. It lies upon the River Dever.
The river, and village, formerly part of Stratton Park, lie on a Hampshire grass downland, underlain with chalk and flint. Parts of the river now disappear in summer through lack of replenishment, evaporation and, more specifically, the porous nature of the bedrock.
Micheldever Station was the starting point for the first automobile journey in Britain, in 1895. The vehicle, a Daimler-engined Panhard-Levassor, had been ordered from France by the Hon Evelyn Ellis (1843–1913). It was transported across the channel by ferry and then to Micheldever Station by train.
This photo gives some nice perspective of the size of the area involved in the salt evaporation ponds at Maras, Peru.

The saying goes in Arkansas "If you don't like the weather wait 10 minutes..." When I began my series of lake sunsets in Arkansas I can attest to that saying. I am not shocked anymore when what I envisioned to be a colorful sunset evaporates.
06:59 AM on a morning in May...Wandering out to my garden in the early morning hours is where you'll find such treasures. We'd had a bit of rain and I was hopeful that Mother Nature might have blessed the foliage with a few drops. I was the only one to see this spectacular balancing act...the drops perched delicately on the edge of the leaves. I'm thankful I was able to record this for posterity.

The day before was really hot one, but at the end of it started to rain. Early morning in the small mountain village was very interesting with this haze moving from the mountain up to the sky - it's like the clouds were born from this place.

The extraction of salt from seawater is an ancient tradition in Sicily, its origins are said to date back to the 12th century. This ancient windmill was used to pump seawater to various evaporation basins.

Maras is a town in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, well known for its salt evaporation ponds, located towards Urubamba from the town center, which have been in use since Inca times.
I finally made it into one of my favorite canyons yesterday after a year of staying away from the crowds. Though there was no ice, winter light on canyon walls reflected ribbons of wet along the edge of pools soon to be evaporated by spring temps and diminishing precipitation.

Getting nearer to Salt Lake City, the sun set as we drove across the amazing Newfoundland Evaporation Basin. This was the most incredibly straight road I had ever seen...not a single turn for 41 miles! Salt on all sides made it look like a winter dusting of snow, but stepping out to take a poto quickly reminded me where we were..so hot!
As water evaporates from the sun-warmed ponds, the water becomes supersaturated and salt precipitates as crystals on the inner surfaces of a pond's earthen walls and on the pond's earthen floor. The pond's keeper then closes off the water flow and allows the pond to go dry. Within a few days the keeper carefully scrapes the dry salt from the sides and bottom, puts it into a suitable vessel, reopens the water-supply, and carries away the salt. The salt varies in colour from white to a light reddish or brownish tan, depending on the skill of an individual worker. Salt and many salt based treats are sold at nearby gift shops.
