ETHICAL DILEMMA Should animals be used for entertainment?
As much as I enjoyed the rodeo it did raise a number of questions for me. How much stress does the animal go through?
Unless you are a vegan (not me) how ethical are any of our choices when it comes to animals? Any thoughts? Does having a conscience mean less fun, absolutely, lol.
In this experiment, which some might call a spiritual exercise, the attempt is made at transferring bioenergy from an onion via an accumulator and, then, an accelerator, to a person. Evidence of transfer must not be 'anecdotal' but repeatable and statistically corroborated. This is the reason why I should be careful when talking about 'evidence'. There is a second caveat of a more ethical nature. In this experiment, the direction of energy transfer is from onion to man. This is purely for scientific reasons. The aim of the whole exercise, once formally established, is to transfer life energy from one person to another (transfer of merit, spiritually speaking). Exercises of this kind have been done before. The two ones I would like to mention specifically, are Joseph Beuys' action "Manresa" and Wilhelm Reich's "Orgone Accumulator".

Instant Discipleship
Reflections on 1 Thessalonians
This past year, my husband has been praying and studying the Bible with Robert, a new Christian. Robert is a former addict, and his life reflected sins from that lifestyle. While he is now committed to Christ, he continues to walk in some of those sins. Many Christian men who have mentored Robert gave up when he didn’t stop sinning on their timeline.
Walking alongside a new Christian with years of ingrained sinful habits can be discouraging. While the Bible doesn’t provide a blueprint for quick discipleship, Paul provides an encouraging model in Thessalonians.
For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory. And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe (1 Thess 2:11–13).
Paul’s example is the example of Jesus himself. Rather than simply commanding holiness, Paul and his team lived holiness among the Thessalonian church. Paul became a “father” to them. The work of a parent is ongoing and sometimes arduous—repeated instructions, reprimands for rules broken, and the modeling of a godly life. Paul guides the Thessalonians to holiness by wielding words with love and urging them on in faith.
He commends the faith and love of the Thessalonian believers, but he still warns them against particular sins like sexual immorality, laziness and revenge (1 Thess 4:3; 5:14–15). These believers found it difficult to adhere to the strict ethical code of their new faith. Yet Paul, recognizing the work ahead of them, encourages them because God is at work.
Despite what we may see outwardly, there is a patient, intimate work that God is performing in his people.

"The great FLYING owlet siblings!"
A few weeks ago I had many days of amazing experiences photographing these young, recently fledged Great Horned Owls in northern Colorado. This particular family consisted of 4 owlets and a very proud mom and dad. Here are just a few of the images I captured of the flying Owlets. All images captured at an ethical distance never disturbing any part of their natural activity.
I'm on the Ethics Committee for the North American Nature Photography Association, promoting ethical and humane practices for wildlife photography. Insect photography is an area often overlooked in the field of ethics because of the diminished way people tend to view these small animals. But they are also living beings, critical to their own ecosystems, and subject to stressors, sometimes significant, because of us. So, with any images I shoot, including insects, I do not stage nor otherwise manipulate animals for the sake of a photo.
Ethical practices include: not refrigerating/freezing insects for photos (a common practice); not staging images by moving insects from their natural perches or habitats; not posing them with other animals, especially their predators. People will sometimes spray insects with formulas like glycerin droplets to create a dew-like effect, but any interference, especially with materials that could potentially harm them physically, should be avoided. (The same and more is true for reptiles and amphibians.)
The important operative: "for the sake of a photo." I don't believe any animal should be harmed or stressed deliberately for the sake of a photo op.
I first saw the silhouette of this grasshopper through pond foliage while I was photographing Pacific chorus frogs. I snapped this just as s/he peered above the leaf.
The animal -- and his/her well-being -- is *always* more important than the photo

In many cases I prefer to wear full camouflage outfits for photographing wildlife. One of the primary reasons is that it reduces the stress that is put upon the animal, which I believe is critical for ethical wildlife photography. This has the added benefit of resulting in more natural behavior.
Camo also lets you get very close to the creature, allowing an intimate view into their world and a more connected experience. I also prefer to lay prone on the ground for small animals as it creates a much more artistic and pleasing image, in my opinion.
This photo required considerable physical and mental effort to obtain, but it was well worth the experience and the resulting image. I used a Skimmer Pod with a gimbal head, for this very low angle of view, and the ability to slide the rig on the ground as I crawled in position.

in Australia the big milk distributors, like Murray Goldman, and the big supermarkets, like Coles, Woolworths and Aldi, are rising off the local dairy farmers and causing financial difficulties for rural communities.
The challenge is for the shopper find in the forrest of retail deceit and to buy milk from ethical Australian milk distributors such as Norco and Maleny Dairies.

The indigenous women of our planet had their lands stolen, their cultures and spiritual beliefs lacerated, their lives sheared and then generations and generations of their children discriminated in the urban and agricultural society, rejected by politicians and businessmen alike. They had their cultures hung in Museums or demonstrated in Carnival parades, as beings of the past, or something folkloric, serving as jesters begging for alms in citadels. The men get drunk and turn weak or go crazy. Their children become fragile and a wave of destruction covers entire tribes, until strong women and men, like the many leaders to come, listen to the voice of their ancestry, seeing the marks of genipap set in the ethnic faces as a mark imposed by Me - NHENDIRU, the Creator - and then feel the eternal call of their INDIGENOUS IDENTITY to be respected and accepted as an example for the planet Earth. Example of a humane cultural society that bled, then recovered their ancestral voice and ethics, surviving the process of slavery of the past and the present so that it could really teach the philosophy of equality and fraternity. Because the indigenous peoples are my first-born children of the five continents, being the first ones whom I placed in this planet, for knowing the principle ethics of the balance of nature. Indigenous people should be examples of GOOD CONVIVIALITY WITH SOCIETY AND WITH NATURE. An example of ethical and spiritual prosperity.

This morning on the ferry to NDSM, this man awoke my inner ethical conflict about candid street photography. Since I started something nibbles at me saying that is it not right to photograph people without them knowing. Of course it's perfectly allowed legally and I keep telling myself that when I'm in doubt. But when this man stared right into the lens I hestitated for at least a tenth of a second before hitting that shutter button. And looking at this particular portrait, I think this man will now represent the doubt in me to continue with the way I work.
