"without disturbance" this ethic is very important to me. we see too many photographers running after deer in the aisles...

___________________
SYMBIOSIS
Along a trail winding through the boreal forest,
I met two lives, two very modest lives
At the foot of a stand of scrubby spruce trees, just as modest.
We rarely stop to observe them
More rarely still to photograph them.
Or even talk about it.
They are part of a neglected biodiversity.
These two modest lives made a symbiosis
In a composite life form
Called lichen *
Improbable association between an algae and a fungus
One bringing to the other essential resources
To survive extreme conditions
And offer other forms of life, (here caribou and other deer)
Vital food.
It is a nature woven from biological networks:
Lichens, trees and other plants, microorganisms, birds, insects, mammals
You and me included ...
All interdependent.
Linked, connected
At all scales of life networks.
In front of me, a simple thallus of small white lichens ...
In my head ... the spark of a different ethic
An ethic of belonging
An ethic of respect and interdependence.
Here in front of me
Along a trail.
Patrice Photographist, Chronicles of the Lands of Poësia
* There are over 20,000 species of lichens. Here, we see the Cladonia rangeferina or caribou or reindeer lichen, very present in the boreal regions of the northern hemisphere.

Chikuni Residence (旧千國家住宅) is an example of local architecture in Otari. It was constructed in the late Edo period in the 19th century and now protected as a house museum.
Chikuni is also the name for the family that owned the house that provided accommodation for merchants and haulers who travelled the Salt Road.
It is so named as salt was an important good transported by the road as evidenced by the following history;
Greater part of present-day Nagano prefecture (長野県) was a territory of Takeda Shingen (武田信玄), a powerful warlord in the 16th century based in Yamanashi prefecture (山梨県).
He was ambitious to expand his inland territory to coastal areas. Uesugi Kenshin (上杉謙信) based in Jou'etsu city (上越市) on the Japan Sea coast was his formidable rival.
Takeda Shingen also attacked the warlords on the Pacific coast, which was responded by a salt embargo imposed on him. They solicited Uesugi Kenshin to participate in the embargo. Contrary to their expectation, he rejected the proposal saying it was against his ethic.
He was praised later from a Confucius viewpoint, but recent studies suggest otherwise.
Uesugi may have needed Takeda to protect his territory from an invasion from the Pacific coast, which actually happened in the course of unifying Japan in the late 16th century.
To put it simply, Uesugi's position to Takeda was similar to present-day China to Russia. Thanks to Uesgi's decision, both survived some more time.
Takeda was destroyed by Tokugawa Ieyasu, who came from the Pacific coast and became the first Shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. Uesugi surrendered to Tokugawa Ieyasu and was transferred from fertile Jou'etsu to Yonezawa in Yamagata prefecture that is inland, poor, and very cold.
Anyway, salt from Uesgi was transported to Takeda by the road in the photo, and both survived for some time.

I always try to get a couple captures that allow everyone to see the beauty of the most recent ENGINE ROOM's entire build. The fact that twice a year the promoters manage to pull it off is testament to their incredible artistry and their fierce work ethic.
This is considered an important work by Croatian artist Marijan Kocković, who served as a ship’s captain during World War II with both American and British forces and had a 45-year career as an artist. As a sculptor, he was referred to as “Marijan of Dubrovnik” and created important portraits of many leading individuals including John F. Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor.

The Netherlands as a whole is divided into two parts, the first by the locals is called 'Boven de Rivieren', the second 'Beneden de Rivieren'. The Rivers flowing into the North Sea are those of the Dutch Delta which separate the North from the South. No, that's not a mere geographical description but its meaning runs deep in Dutch consciousness. The North is heritage, it is claimed, to the protestant, austere work ethic, the South in the grasp op Burgundian, even catholic enjoyment of life. The South encompasses the provinces of Limburg - home of Maastricht - and Brabant (and possibly Zeeland); the North the others - home of The Hague and Amsterdam and, of course, Groningen and Leeuwarden. The South were once Generality Lands, which means they were governed directly by the States General unlike the others which had their own governments. Lots of cultural differences even extending to the pronunciation of Dutch (the Southerners are made fun of because of their so-called 'soft g', instead of the northern hard guttural).
One of those great rivers is the Waal. Here's a view from the railway bridge at Zaltbommel. Cumulating above are those wonderful woolly clouds in a blue sky.
The Ibaloi or Nabaloi is an indigenous ethic group found in the northern Philippines and collectively known as Igorot. Most of their fashions, rituals and beliefs like ‘mummification’ still remain in some form and some rural villagers continue to live much as their ancestors did, tending to rice terraces and living off lands.

soy marineiro
me gusto eu mar...
E onde estou indo?
Onde estarei daqui a 5 anos?
Vamos mudar nossos comportamentos.

After my icecapades the other day, I encountered this scene at the mouth of the canyon. The ice had melted in the afternoon sun with alto cumulous clouds refelcted in the pool along with a hoodoo or two on the canyon rim.
I've a had a few location requests recently which I deflect with generic descriptions such as "along the Colorado River". As a personal ethic, most of my images are from local hikes rather than travels to far off places. Also, the ice changes on a daily basis due to the freeze/thaw that happens this time of year. You can find these sorts of scenes in your area if you think about the conditions that create ice and pools with reflections. Look for shadowy, low-lying spots where rain or snowmelt gathers. You'd be surprised what you find in the most ho-hum places. Go explore in your neighborhood!
Building a nest is going to take a lot of material. This little bird is actually stealing tacking out of the Bullock's Oriole's, in and effort to feather her own nest. How sneaky is that? That little female Bullock is working herself half to death trying to complete her nest.
Just another example of the lazy preying on the hard working of the animal world. No real work ethic. Who knew?

No, niente rimpianti.
.. Due miserie in un corpo solo"

"[..]Someone was a communist because he needed an impulse to something new, because he was ready to change every day, because he felt need of a different ethic, because it was maybe only strength, flying, dreaming, it was only a burst of enthusiasm, a desire of changing everything and his own life.
Someone was a communist because all this led him to add something to himself, it was as if he were two persons in one. His personal, everyday toil on one side, and, on the other side, his feeling to be part of a race that wanted to soar in the air to really change life.
There's no regret. Maybe, even at that time, many had opened their wings without being able to fly, like hypothetical seagulls.
And now? We feel as if we were double, even now: the established man passing respectfully through his dreary everyday survival on one side, and, on the other, the seagull who doesn't even want to try and fly anymore, because his dreams have numbed.
Two kinds of misery in a sole body"

“And my heart is sinking like a setting sun, setting on the things I wish I’d done. Oh, the last goodbye’s the hardest one to say, and this is where the cowboy rides away.”
– George Strait
Behind the media’s portrayal of cowboys lies the truth behind them. They symbolize strength, courage, and fortitude.
Moreover, cowboys are known to be the symbols of the American spirit and character because of their work ethic, bravery, and resourcefulness.
A real cowboy doesn’t have to say they are a cowboy, you know, the smell, the expression, and the heart tell itself.
Real cowboys don’t need to correct people. They just smile, nod their head, and say yep. Each to his own. That’s the cowboy way.

Kỳ lân is a mythical creature that is considered auspicious. It is a chimera of dragon (head), deer (body and horn), cow (tail), horse (hoof), snake/fish (scale) etc.
It has a Chinese origin and is known to be associated with Confucianism. It is found in countries that are influenced by the religion/philosophy/theory/ethic.
Kỳ lân is the Vietnamese pronunciation of Chinese Qilan (麒麟 pronounced "chilan").
It is pronounced Kirin in Japan. It is rather a beer brand (flic.kr/p/2hpNVvM) than a religious symbol (^_^;

I apologise, in the run up to Christmas I simply ran out of time to create a Christmas greeting image.
When I took this photo last Saturday morning the weather was dull but just as I arrived at one of the regular Kingfisher perches out came the sun and with it the Kingfisher. How lucky and thankful I was for this ray of sunshine.
Looking at the state of the world at the moment there are so many problems ongoing. As well as diplomatic action and agreement, perhaps what is needed is a little luck like I had with this photo. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
I would like to thank all those who have taken time to view my images over the past year. What photo opportunities will 2026 bring? Regardless, I look forward to continued Flickr interaction with fellow photographers from all over the world especially with who share a similar photographic ethic.
Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

True belonging is not passive. It's not the belonging that comes with just joining a group. It's not fitting in or pretending or selling out because it's safer. It's a practice that requires us to be vulnerable, get uncomfortable, and learn how to be present with people without sacrificing who we are.
Dr. Brené Brown
Belongingness entails an unwavering commitment to not simply tolerating and respecting difference, but to ensuring that all people are welcome and feel that they belong.

The most important thing in all human relationships is conversation, but people don't talk anymore, they don't sit down to talk and listen. They go to the cinema, watch television, listen to the radio, read books, update their status on the internet, but they almost never talk. If we want to change the world, we have to go back to a time when warriors would gather around a fire and tell stories

We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say, ‘It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.

Skawennati’s ground breaking practice skillfully links Hauenosaunee culture with cyber aesthetics. Her machinima – a technique of movie-making in virtual environments – includes cultural and historical references and highlights Hauenosaunee diplomacy, sovereignty and futurity. By evoking the cultural practice of extending the longhouse to accommodate new generations and others into the community, the title speaks to a deeply held ethic of inclusion.
Last Thursday was one of the busier days in my new and not very hectic lifestyle. If there had been a diary, it would have looked something like this - 1pm, lunch with Lucy in Penzance; 3pm (or thereabouts) set up tripod at some yet to be decided lonely coastal location; 6:30 tune into free webinar courtesy of one Mr N Danson, YouTube leviathan of this parish. Lots of things to occupy the afternoon and evening, but all of them fun and none of them destined to cause the rush of panic that five out of every seven days used to bring for most of the year.
Receiving an invitation to dine with one of the leading lights from the place where I used to work is about as close as getting the VIP treatment as I ever will to be honest. I’ve watched Lucy rise through the ranks towards the stratosphere over the last eight years in fascination at how a person can have such an enormous capacity for hard work and tireless enthusiasm. Quite how she keeps going year after year with such energy levels is a mystery to me, but then I always did have my eye on the exit door that I’d be running through as soon as the finances allowed. So bearing in mind her admirable work ethic, I felt doubly honoured to take up so much of her time over a three course early Christmas lunch after which I could barely move from my chair. By the time I forced down the last wedge from the generously filled cheeseboard it was clear that I wasn’t going to need any tea that evening. I can’t ever let food go to waste, so leaving things untouched on the plate isn’t in my lexicon – I think it’s something to do with the Irish blood and the potato famine.
Lunch over, and Lucy was preparing to deal with half a dozen new and urgent items that had cropped up during the almost two hours we’d spent catching up. I quickly decided that I wasn’t going to be of any further assistance and so I made for the car park, carefully concealing that still novel sense of jubilation that I could simply head for home while everyone else was dealing with the slings and arrows that would take them to five o clock and well beyond. I’d had half an idea to return to nearby Trevaylor Wood, but the combination of the cold north wind and the ever decreasing levels of foliage left on branches quickly snapped me out of what would have certainly been my final dismal attempt to capture autumn. I’d also considered continuing west towards Land’s End, but time would be against me and I’d be racing home through rush hour traffic later if I wanted to watch Nigel’s webinar. And then I remembered this place I used to go to all the time – the place I’ve inexplicably overlooked in recent outings. Perfectly located along the way home, it seemed obvious that I should finally return to Godrevy and the place that never stops giving. Behind me the sun was lighting its way through washed out clouds, softly diffused and promising a memorable sunset beyond the bluff above Carbis Bay.
Twenty minutes later, I marched along the familiar duckboards towards the commanding view over the long sands of Gwithian Beach and the west. As I chose my position on the clifftop the inevitable began to happen, the sun finding a thick bank of dark grey cloud to hide behind, taking my plans along with it after one single and poorly composed test shot. Around here such disappointments tend to happen more often than not, and so Plan B would have to be rolled into action, or at least it would once I’d decided exactly what Plan B was.
After a brief wander down to the mostly empty beach I ended up here, perched in the shelter of a crag beside one of the benches where we sit and watch the ocean on calmer and warmer days. From my lofty perch I could keep the tripod protected from the wind that was racing across the petrol blue sea towards the land. Despite the conditions, the sea was relatively calm so once more I went for my ND filters to smooth the sea and the sky and eliminate the distractions, and in the fading light I made a series of long exposures. One of the spin off benefits of taking six or seven minutes on each shot is that you can’t possibly end up with 582 of them to sift through like I did during Storm Arwen a couple of days later. It makes things a lot easier when it comes to the shortlisting and editing, and suits a lazy Thursday evening when you’re full of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.
Later on I sat quietly nursing a mug of spiced ginger and lemon tea watching Nigel talking about all the other things he constantly reminds me are important. I winced a bit when he expressed his current opinion on the Orton effect (even though I’m sure I lifted my version of the process from one of his videos), but apart from that I hoped I was on the right tracks. Now remind me again, subject, composition, timing, light, unicorns…………
This attractive but unused old dairy barn shows the efforts of a farmer to extend its use. A lean-to that probably once held calves was made into a make-shift garage and now even that is vacant. As we age, we may not be able to do as much as we once did but our work ethic helps us do what we can.
Thank you for your kindness and giving me space. We are just trying to live our lives.
“Human beings are a part of the animal kingdom, not apart from it. The separation of "us" and "them" creates a false picture and is responsible for much suffering. It is part of the in-group/out-group mentality that leads to human oppression of the weak by the strong as in ethic, religious, political, and social conflicts.”
― Marc Bekoff -
When Capricorn and Pisces form a friendship, it's a union of opposite natures attracting. Capricorn is practical and down to earth, scrupulous and possessed of a strong work ethic. Pisces is very spiritual and dreamy, taking on the needs and concerns of those around them. These friends together form a sincere and devoted pair, and both have good morals. They admire each other: Capricorn likes Pisces' ephemeral and kind nature, and Pisces appreciates Capricorn's quick mind and tenacity.
This is a friendship that may take time to develop, but it will grow stronger and closer. The Capricorn-Pisces duo is based on cooperation and the reciprocal fulfillment of each other's needs.

Shot with the phone camera. Converging vertical correction in PS resulted in a mandatory crop that was excessive, but enough left to produce this.

THANKS!
This was taken on Christmas Day, days after her 18th Birthday.
Relaxed and happy.
It was not the face I encountered at 7 am this morning which was crumpled and tear stained, leaning into the computer screen, studying her ATAR results, as if she stared long enough, they might magically change. Her results were close to the top 20% for the State (outstanding in my view) but not enough to get into the University Course she dreams of.
I am so proud of how well she has done in a year that can only be described as “shit” (word most used to describe this year in a Newspaper Poll). The success was not in this score but in having completed year 12 with really only about one month of face to face school contact and many hurdles.
I think some of these challenges will serve these young people well in the future. They have developed resilience, independence, strength and a self driven work ethic that will all be beneficial in the years ahead. They have really looked out for each other.
I reminded her that your VCE ATAR does not define who you are. It doesn’t measure your kindness, strength, compassion and care for others and the world around you.
She has many pathways available to her and I have every confidence that she will achieve whatever she wants in the future. She is a tough and determined cookie.
As many people have sent their best wishes regarding today’s VCE results and (Victorian Certificate of Education) and have followed this years journey, I thought I’d post this and add it to my way behind portrait series. Flickr 2020 x100 Portraits 7/10
