Once rated by CNN as the world’s most beautiful pier, the Whalebone Pier in the Durban suburb of Umhlanga has become a symbol of this touristy district. Completed in 2004, the pier actually built to assist with the dispersal of storm water into the sea, which previously was discharged directly on the popular beach itself and threatened its Blue Flag status. Nowadays, the beach is kept clean and tourists have a fun selfie spot.

Every once in a while someone comes along and builds something that not only serves its purpose well but looks spectacular into the bargain. For an example of just such a happy union of style and substance, consider the Umhlanga Stormwater Outfall Pier. The eThekwini municipality commissioned the whale-bone pier (as it’s more popularly and romantically known) to deal with a very down-to-earth problem.

I have been trying to inspire Mark of MarkBooysen WildlifePhotography, who uses a cropped frame Canon South Africa camera, to purchase the Sigma South Africa 10 – 20 lens for his landscape work. I have shown him a few photographs but am not sure if he is really settled on the potential new lens. I therefore hauled out a raw image from October 2013, and worked on it. Once rated by CNN as the world’s most beautiful pier, the Whalebone Pier in the Durban suburb of Umhlanga has become a symbol of this touristy district. Completed in 2004, the pier actually built to assist with the dispersal of storm water into the sea, which previously was discharged directly on the popular beach itself and threatened its Blue Flag status. Nowadays, the beach is kept clean and tourists have a fun selfie spot.

I've never been one to rush down to the harbour to see a ship arriving or leaving but this was an opportunity not to be missed (PS - I could also then miss gym!).
