The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) around 1940. The three photos are from an album that students received when they graduated in 1940. The recipient of the album studied mechanical engineering and died in 1994. The heirs do not claim the copyright and leave the photos for publication for the historical heritage. A warm Sunday evening in mid-August and a standard Class 31/1 31229 was allocated to the 16:40 Birmingham New Street to Norwich recorded near Washwood Heath, Birmingham. This cross-country service would take 4 hours 12 minutes to complete the journey.

Departing on a publicity flight out over the North Sea. Today was the first scheduled flight by Ethiopian to Manchester.
47535 stands at Norwich on 23/7/88 with the 15.52 Yarmouth to Leeds. This train produced whatever could be found at Leeds, either class 31s (including pairs) or 47s, both of either ETH or no-heat variety, though they must have been flush for power in Yorkshire this particular day.
535 had new cabs at both ends after being involved in an accident at Luton in 1983 when it hit a DMU.
