* Interaction design revolution.
* Gesture- a wave, a toe tap, tap with a finger etc.
* Touch screen computers have been around since the 70', there was a touch screen phone - Simon - in the 1980's.
* Good reasons to have a gestural interface - more 'natural'. Flexibility, space, more nuance, more fun.
* Two types- touchscreen and free-form (clapper was the first one).
* Some circumstances are not appropriate - not for heavy data input, accessibility etc.
* The secret sauce - sensors.
* Common sensors - pressure, light, proximity, acoustic, tilt, motion and orientation.
* Kinesiology and physiology.
* The attributes of gestures - presence, duration, width, height, depth, orientation, pressure objects, number of touch points, sequence of gestures.
* The more complicated the gesture, the fewer people will be able to do it.
* Fingers - 16-20mm w, tips 8-10mm w, pads 10-14mm w, fingernails, finger oil, gloves, wrist support, inaccurate when compared to a sensor, attached to a hand. - fingers can be inaccurate.
* Iceberg tips - touch target is bigger than the visual target that is shown. Also adaptive targets- which predict what the next target is and makes it bigger.
* Interface conventions - cursors, hovers and mouse-overs, multi-select, right-clicks, drop down menus, double-clicks, cut and paste.
* Three part equation to determine the approach the available sensors and input devices, the task, the physiology of the human body.
* The complexity of the gesture should match the complexity of the task at hand - i.e. turning on a light switch, one light on/off up to turning off all the lights in a house - maybe using both hands in a palm down gesture.
* "The best designs are those that dissolve into behavior" - designer Naoto Fukasawa - almost unconscious human behaviors.
