Since I am very lucky to have a lot of wild life and especially birds at home and around it automatically it attracts predators...

Last year, I dug the snow and set up my little camouflage tent, which I adapted with a bed white sheet and diaper pins to hold it to try to blend in with the snow. I wanted to try to capture birds in flight with my new R5 camera and also be more discreet in case it (the Northern Shrike) just happened to show up around my feeders installation # 2 on the shores of the lake where the light is favorable part of the day and the favorite hunting spot for small birds for the Shrike. I had the opportunity to observe this superb Northern Shrike several times during my photography sessions. It even attacked Evening Grosbeaks successfully to my surprise although here favorite preys were much smaller birds and mouses. What I can tell you with certainty is that it is very fast and very skittish bird of prey...

Ps If you're wondering why I don't post more on Flickr and that I had neglected the media, well this morning I only have 0.06 Mbps of Download and 0.04 Mbps of Upload at home... It's a long time to post and comment on your photos every day...

I imagine some here are familiar with the poetry, essays, and books of the author and farmer, Wendell Berry, of Kentucky. He is a favorite author of mine, and it was a privilege to meet him once about twenty years ago. This is his poem.

THE PEACE of WILD THINGS

Author, Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

----------

Is a species of fish-eating aquatic bird that belongs to the phalacrocoracid family. Its distribution area is very large (Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, and an eastern fringe of North America); there are usually five to eight subspecies.

The male is on average more corpulent than the female and its beak wider. The plumage of the adult Greater Cormorant is generally entirely black (but some subspecies, sometimes considered as distinct species, have a white throat: maroccanus; white throat and breast: lucidus), with the exception of white spots more or less extensive on the cheeks and throat of the adults and blue reflections in the black plumage, or green-bronze at the level of the back and the wings. During the reproduction period, a white spot appears at the top of each thigh. Certain subspecies may also have white feathers on their necks during this period. Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis has a white neck at this time of the year. The bill of this cormorant is white-cream or light gray in color; it has a large yellow spot at the corner of the lips which distinguishes it, in addition to its larger build, from other species. The eyes are green and the webbed legs are black.

Juveniles have lighter plumage, with brownish backs and white bellies and breasts.

I'm still making my images using an old and simple 2009 version of photo manager software produced by ACDSee. And during the last two decades I've used it to produce 37,538 original image variations, only 4589 of which appear on Flickr - the rest sit on my hard-drive and now serve as an almost endless source of raw material for new abstracts. Not sure what to do about using AI to produce artwork. This old guy may just continue to use his 2009 copy of ACDSee. Cheers. H

I think I found my next photo essay. Interesting cars with my hasselblad. A very easy target though. This will be a work in progress.

At the start of this year when Graham’s 318 Coffee House in Geneva reopened after major renovations I popped in to tell the owner Bob how much I admired the new look. I mentioned that I especially enjoyed the meandering path that leads to the front door. I wondered aloud if it was deliberately made with such tight curves in order to slow folks down, as in some Japanese garden designs where paths can sometimes take an unexpected or abrupt turn in an effort to slow down the walker and make them more conscious of their surroundings. Bob replied that while that’s a beautiful principle that he was unfamiliar with, the real reason for the tight meander here is more functional: should the path from the sidewalk to the front door be a straight line, it would be too steep a grade for wheelchairs to make. I found this an interesting example of how our manufactured surroundings are a vibrant mix of both the aesthetic and the practical.

A difficult theme Wabi Sabi. I read the essay In Praise of Shadows by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki for inspiration and ended up with this photo of a piece of washed-up wood with holes from woodworm, a pedestal of a work of art that is here in my house.
