Where exactly does the glacier end!

Between refuges at 4,970 meters (16,305 ft) above sea level.

The name of this volcano has etymologies such as "Ice God" and "Sacred Wind of the Moon".

It was considered a God by the ancient puruháes.

Bike down Chimborazo:

At 6,310 meters (20,702 ft), Volcán Chimborazo is the highest peak in Ecuador. So don't just climb up it – mountain-bike down it!

Drove up to the refuge on its flanks and then freewheeled down, looking out for grazing vicuña as I went down.

Drove for just over two hours to Mount Chimborazo (6,310 meters/20,702ft), the highest and most impressive of Ecuador’s volcanoes. We parked at the lower refuge (4,800 meters / 15,748 feet) and continued on foot to the Edgar Whymper Refuge. Located at 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) this is the highest refuge in the world!

From here, it was all downhill- first on foot and then by bike I descended all the way to Ambato (2,800 meters / 9,186 feet).

This was an amazing bike ride through the highlands, with vicuñas being the sole inhabitants of these wild stretches.

On this tour, I enjoyed a breathtaking 70 km ride through varying landscapes in just one day. This trip is by far a favorite ride of previous cyclists.

Seldom does one have the chance to ride from the snow line of a volcano, through rural Andean patchwork fields, picnic with vicuñas and at the end of the ride arrived in a restaurant.

In Ambato, we unload the bikes and I returned to Quito by VIP taxi at about 150 km per hour. I told the taxi driver that he was not a driver, he was a Formula 1 driver. I haven't been in a car at this speed for a long time, especially at high altitudes.

Cycling down Volcán Chimborazo along a new designated bike path from Refugio Carrel to the park entrance is an exhilarating way to experience the mountain. Several agencies in Riobamba, including Pro Bici and Julio Verne, offer recommended biking excursions (per person from $45), which can include a hike from the first to the second refugios. After the initial steep downhill the route gets even more beautiful as you cycle through the páramo past families of vicuña.

Both are so good people (my guide Jose and his girlfriend), that several people (Ecuadorian Indians) hitchhiked on the side of the road, they stopped and offered. It was cold and windy, public transport takes a long time. In the end, Ecuadorian Indians offer to pay some amount, my guide did not accept payment. This moved me several times.

Offer a ride to strangers! (Confidence)

Where the glacier ends.

As Ecuador's highest mountain, Chimborazo is a very popular climb and can be climbed year round with the best seasons being December–January and July–August.

The easiest (IFAS Grade: PD) and most climbed routes are the Normal and the Whymper route. Both are western ridge routes starting at the Whymper hut and leading via the Ventemilla summit to the main (Whymper) summit.

There are several other less used and more challenging routes on the other mountains faces and ridges leading to one of Chimborazo's summits:

Main (Whymper, Ecuador),

Politecnico (Central),

N. Martinez (Eastern).

The mountain is contained on the IGM (Instituto Geografico Militar) 1:50000 Map Chimborazo (CT-ÑIV-C1).

In his central essay "The Poet," Ralph Waldo Emerson uses the Chimborazo as metaphor for the poet (and the creative genius in general), who "must stand out of our low limitations."

Hermitage of Our Lady of Mercy or of Santa María de la Cabeza,

It is the oldest Marian sanctuary in Madrid, since it has its origin in pre-Islamic times. Only its ruins and the hermit's house in the old Visigoth neighborhood of Caraquiz, on the outskirts of the Villa, have survived to this day.

Today we can see its floor plan, a single nave, in which the remains of iconostasis are still preserved, as well as part of the walls and the start of the apse, and the belfry, all dating from the 17th century.

The name of Santa María de la Cabeza was given to it because of the care that this saint had with the temple when she worked in it and for its later sanctification. In this way, she came to house her remains inside when she died until in the 18th century they were transferred to Madrid together with those of her husband, San Isidro Labrador, resting together in the Collegiate Church of San Isidro. At the foot of one of the arches, is what is said to have been her tomb.

Throughout time, its owners have been several. According to tradition, in the Middle Ages it belonged to the Temple, later coming to belong to the Archbishopric of Toledo. At that time, the Cistercian Order of Malacuera was commissioned to take charge of it, and it remained so until 1511, the year in which the Franciscans of Torrelaguna kept it. Around 1950, the III National Assembly of Brotherhoods declared it “National Sanctuary of Peasant Pilgrimage”, at which time it was decided that its reconstruction should take place, something that, however, was not carried out then. In 1976, it ceased to belong to the Church and was sold to an individual, which is its character today.

For centuries, every year a pilgrimage has been held in its surroundings in June.

It is the largest canid in Ecuador, measuring 1.70 cm including its tail. It can weigh between 6 and 13 kg.

They are lonely, although they can share their territory with the female. They rest and hide in underground caves, or fallen arboreal holes, cavities found in rocky areas or in dense thickets.

The top of Chimborazo is completely covered by glaciers, with some north-eastern glacier arms flowing down to 4,600 meters (15,091 ft). Its glacier is the source of water for the population of the Bolivar and Chimborazo provinces of Ecuador. Chimborazo glacier's ice mass has decreased over the past decades, which is thought by some to be due to the combined influences of global warming, ash covers from recent volcanic activity of Tungurahua, and the El Niño phenomenon.

As on other glaciated Ecuadorian mountains, Chimborazo's glacial ice is mined by locals (the so-called Hieleros from Spanish Hielo for Ice) to be sold in the markets of Guaranda and Riobamba. In earlier days, the people transported ice for cooling uses down to coastal towns such as Babahoyo or Vinces.

Volcán Chimborazo and Volcán Carihuairazo are both within the Reserva de Producción de Fauna Chimborazo. It is called a ‘fauna-production reserve’ because it is home to hundreds of vicuña (a wild relative of the llama). Once hunted to extinction, they were donated by Chile and Bolivia in the 1980s. Now prospering, it’s easy to spot their elegant silhouettes in the mist on the bus ride between Guaranda and Riobamba, and you’ll see them poking around if you explore the park.

If that ain't enough, there are llamas and alpacas, too.

Excursion facilitates, with the incentive to climb to the second refuge at the foot of the El Chimborazo volcano, and take a warm coca tea (the second mug) there, since it was very cold.

Once we arrived at the Refuge, we followed the path that went up to a lagoon that is a little higher and that is 5,100 meters (16,732 ft) high, there we took the classic pictures.

Then we continued walking along a different path to the climb and it was very steep, cold, foggy and snowing.

The summit of Mount Everest is higher above sea level, but the summit of Chimborazo is widely reported to be the farthest point on the surface from Earth's center, with Huascarán a very close second.

The summit of the Chimborazo is the fixed point on Earth that has the utmost distance from the center – because of the oblate spheroid shape of the planet Earth, which is "thicker" around the Equator than measured around the poles. Chimborazo is one degree south of the Equator and the Earth's diameter at the Equator is greater than at the latitude of Everest (8,848 m (29,029 ft) above sea level), nearly 27.6° north, with sea level also elevated. Despite being 2,585 m (8,481 ft) lower in elevation above sea level, it is 6,384.4 km (3,967.1 mi) from the Earth's center, 2,163 m (7,096 ft) farther than the summit of Everest (6,382.3 km (3,965.8 mi) from the Earth's center).

However, by height above sea level, Chimborazo is not the highest peak of the Andes.

I am always intrigued when I see people living so close to danger, such as on slopes, places with very high frequency of earthquakes or risk of tsunamis. I understand that, often, living like this is more a matter of lack of option. Anyway, nothing surprises me more than to find people living near an active volcano.

In Ecuador, it is even a little difficult to escape this. One in three Ecuadorians lives near a volcano. It has more than 60 volcanic cavities spread across the national territory, a small country. Eleven of these volcanoes are active. Some have been asleep for a long time, and tourist complexes have been created around them. It is too beautiful to see these geological formations up close.

But I always approach with a little bit of fear. Nature will surprise you, right?

During my stay in Ecuador, in December, I was able to see up close and far some of the most interesting volcanoes in the country.

Chimborazo is an ice-capped inactive volcano in Ecuador. Chimborazo is a double volcano composed of one volcanic edifice on top of another. Chimborazo shows four summits; Whymper, Veintimilla, Politecnica, and Nicolas Martínez. The Whymper peak is the highest point on the mountain at 6,263 meters. The Veintimilla peak is about 6,230 m (20,440 ft) high. The Politecnica peak is 5,820 m (19,094 ft) high. The last peak, Nicolas Martínez, is 5,570 m (18,274 ft) high and was named after the father of Ecuadorian mountaineering. The volcano is categorized as a stratovolcano. This type of volcano is characterized as having low slopes at the bottom that gradually get steeper the higher up the mountain. Chimborazo has a circumference of 78 miles (126 km) and a diameter of 30 miles (48 km). Chimborazo's upper elevations are covered in glaciers that are decreasing in size due to climate change and falling ash from the nearby volcano, Tungurahua. In addition to the glaciers, the volcano is covered with craters. The volcano is dominantly andesitic to dacitic. This means that the lava is blocky, or flowing down the sides of the volcano, or somewhere in between.

Chimborazo is 73.5 metres higher than the highest mountain in North America. Chimborazo is often associated with the nearby volcano Cotopaxi, although the two volcanoes have completely different structures.

Starting on Nov. 12th, 2012, nobody is allowed to climb any glaciated mountain in Ecuador without hiring an accredited mountain guide.

This restriction was issued by Ecuadorian Goverment after the last fatal accidents that happened in 2012 in Illiniza Sur and Norte.

Make sure you start before midnight so you'll be back before 10 am at the latest, for two reasons:

First, rock fall hazard. The part of the route along The Castle, a large rock wall about one hour from the Refugio Whymper, gets dangerous around that time. Lots of small and large rocks start to fall down then from this high wall due to warming temperatures.

Passing this area (El Corredor) later in the afternoon is really running between falling rocks.

Secondly, clouds will most often roll in early in the afternoon, making route finding very difficult. As there are big areas of crevasses on both sides of the normal route, losing track can be very dangerous.

***

As I said earlier, most parties climb directly from the Whymper refuge (5,000 m / 16,400 ft.). It provides bunk-beds (4 dozens), brand new mattresses, toilets, cold water, basic food supplies, stencils, gas stove, fireplace and ... cable TV (just kidding!) .

At the moment overnight costs in Whymper refuge is USD. 15.00 a night for a bed and USD. 30.00 with meals. The refuge is partially open

You can find the same facilities and costs in the Carrel refuge (4,800 m / 15,744 ft.) as well. This refuge is completely open with 52 beds. Your climb will have to start an hour earlier, though.

What else do you need? Camping is also allowed anywhere on the mountain and some parties make a high camp to cut the summit push in two days which, I think, increases your chances to make it to the summit. The most recommendable are:

El Castillo high camp, lays in the hollow of a bowl, just a few meters beyond the rock outcrop and at the left side (north) of the Southwest ridge (the normal route). Not advisable if there’s fresh snow accumulation on the first dome. This camp can get pummeled at least by the windblast of avalanches coming from above.

Moraine camp, located 10 minutes away from Whymper refuge at 5,050 m. There’s a wide flat field in this area. Make sure you set camp away from the moraines and the Thielman glacier.

Called ‘Taita’ (Father) by indigenous people in the area, Volcán Chimborazo (6263m) is the country’s tallest mountain, a hulking giant topped by a massive glacier. Because of Earth's equatorial bulge, Chimborazo is both the furthest point from the center of the earth and the closest terrestrial point to the stars.

Along with its smaller, craggier companion Volcán Carihuairazo (5020m) to the northeast, and the Río Mocha valley that connects them, Chimborazo is a remote, even desolate, place populated by only a few indigenous communities.

Chimborazo and Carihuairazo lie within the Reserva de Producción de Fauna Chimborazo. It is called a ‘fauna-production reserve’ because it is home to thousands of vicuña (a relative of the llama). Pazo do Castrelos – Pazo Quiñones de León

Pazo do Castrelos – Pazo Quiñones de León

The Pazo Quiñones de León or Pazo de Castrelos de Vigo is located above the Vigo park of Castrelos, on the banks of the Lagares River. Originally, around the year 1670, the so-called Pazo de Lavandeira or Torre de Lavandeira existed in this same place, whose original structure would be that of the typical medieval homage tower. In 1641 the struggles for independence from Portugal led to the destruction of the tower.

History

The first family that resides in this Pazo de Castrelos was that of Captain Juan Tavares, who rebuilt the old Pazo. In the 18th century it passed into the hands of the Montenegros, and a century later it passed to the marquis of Valladares. At the end of the 19th century, the VIII Marchioness of Valladares and her husband Fernado Quiñones de León (Marqués de Alcedo), who will give the future pazo its name, undertake a major reform and restoration of the building. The marchioness dies soon and the manor passes into the hands of her son Fernando, who, if descended, will leave it to his father and as usufructuary to his wife Mariana de Wythe. His father will be the one who in 1924 donated the property to the city of Vigo as long as its use was public and a museum and a park were built.

The Pazo de Satomé or also called Pazo de la Pastora from the 17th century inspired the structure with two towers that flank the central body. Later, as we mentioned, the Marquis of Alcedo made a great reform. In 1853 the chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen was built, which is located in a body perpendicular to the main façade. Inside the chapel we will find an altarpiece from the 16th century, whose origin is uncertain.

The gardens

In addition to the building, the complex is famous for its wonderful gardens. Inspired by French baroque gardens, these were created at the end of the 19th century. A Portuguese gardening company, Jacinto Mattos, would probably be in charge of this work. The garden is divided into six parts: The access garden, the French garden, the English garden (or tea meadow), the sun terrace and finally the forest. These gardens have fantastic centuries-old species where camellias stand out.

Together with Herrera de Soria and Nafría de Ucero he runs a condominium known as Comunidad de Herrera de Soria, Nafría de Ucero and Ucero, with a surface area of 384.84 hectares.

The lordship of Ucero belonged in the thirteenth century to Juan García de Ucero, husband of María de Meneses, and upon his death, his wife inherited it and gave it to the illegitimate daughter he had with King Sancho IV of Castile, Violante Sánchez of Castilla.

And in a document issued on November 13, 1325 in Avignon, Pope John XXII entrusted the Archbishop of Toledo, Juan de Aragón, to follow the cause or lawsuit maintained by Violante Sánchez and the Bishop of Osma, Juan Pérez de Ascarón, for the possession of the lordship of Ucero, which legally belonged to her by inheritance from her mother and had been illegally occupied and retained by said bishop, according to her, since he bought it on May 23, 1302 for 300,000 maravedís, and together with other properties, to the executors of Juan García de Villamayor, as recorded in the deed of sale published in Volume II of the Memoirs of Fernando IV of Castile. But despite the above, Violante continued to consider herself the owner of the manor and in 1327 He donated it, along with the rest of his possessions, to the Order of Santiago, despite the fact that the dominion of Ucero belonged definitively from 1302 to the bishops of Osma.

In the 1879 Census, ordered by the Count of Floridablanca, it appeared as the head town of the Ucero Party in the Municipality of Soria, with jurisdiction of abadengo and under the authority of the Mayor of Señorío, appointed by the Bishop of Osma. It then had 232 inhabitants.

At the fall of the Old Regime, the town of constitutes a constitutional municipality in the region of Castilla la Vieja, which in the 1842 census had 38 homes and 150 neighbors.

There are no central statistics on summits, but it is estimated about 70% of climbers who reach base camp go on to summit.

There are few deaths, perhaps one or two every few years and the reason is often climber errors.

On November 10, 1993 three parties of climbers, one ascending and two descending, were caught in an avalanche on the steep slopes below the Veintimilla summit. This avalanche buried ten climbers in a crevasse at 18,700 feet (5,700 m). These climbers comprised six French, two Ecuadorians, one Swiss, and one Chilean. After the ten climbers were buried in snow, it took twenty people and ten days to find their bodies.

This is considered the worst climbing accident in Ecuador to date.

Climbing Chimborazo or Carihuairazo is an adventure only for well-acclimatized, experienced mountaineers with snow- and ice-climbing gear (contact guides in Riobamba or Quito). From Riobamba, you can organize a day trip that takes you to Chimborazo's Refugio Whymper at 5,000m, or just beyond, to Laguna Cóndor Cocha at 5,100m.

Care should be taken to properly acclimatize if you plan to do physical activities around Chimborazo and Carihuairazo. If your accommodations are at altitude in the vicinity of Chimborazo and Carihuairazo, then they will probably be good sites to acclimatize, although you should also consult a qualified guide if you are planning hard hiking or climbs on either peak. You can arrange mountain-bike descents from the high-altitude refuges with tour operators in Riobamba.

The small indigenous community of Pulinguí San Pablo (3,900m) on the Riobamba–Guaranda road is well worth an afternoon visit, and climbers and hikers can stay overnight in the simple community lodge. The Puruhá people have lived on Chimborazo’s flanks for centuries and are now working to bring tourism to the region. Locals provide basic guiding services and can take you on fascinating interpretation trails in the area.

There are two functioning huts, the Carrel Hut (4,850 m) and the nearby Whymper Hut (5,000 m). The Carrel Hut can be reached by car from Riobamba, Ambato or Guaranda. On the north-west side there is the now defunct Zurita hut (4,900 m), which served as base for the Pogyos route.

The Normal route sees many attempts all year long and is considered a class 4 climb with route finding and crevasses crossing.

There are two refuges on the mountain, Carrel refuge at 4,800 m (15,744 ft.) and Whymper refuge at 5,000 m (16,400 ft.) where most of the parties do their summit bid from. It is a 6-9 hours climb with slopes up to 60 degrees. People usually start their climb one or two hours before midnight and return to the hut a couple hours before noon in order to avoid rock fall danger caused by sun hit at the glacier entrance known as “El Corredor”.

***

Most parties climb directly from the Whymper refuge (5,000 m / 16,400 ft.). It provides bunk-beds (4 dozens), brand new mattresses, toilets, cold water, basic food supplies, stencils, gas stove, fireplace and etc.

History:

Until the beginning of the 19th century, it was thought that Chimborazo was the highest mountain on Earth (measured from sea level), and such reputation led to many attempts on its summit during the 17th and 18th centuries.

In 1746, the volcano was explored by French academicians from the French Geodesic Mission. Their mission was to determine the sphericity of the Earth. Their work along with another team in Lapland established that the Earth was an oblate spheroid rather than a true sphere. They did not reach the summit of Chimborazo.

In 1802, during his expedition to South America, Alexander von Humboldt, accompanied by Aimé Bonpland and the Ecuadorian Carlos Montúfar, tried to reach the summit. From his description of the mountain, it seems that before he and his companions had to return suffering from altitude sickness they reached a point at 5,875 m, higher than previously attained by any European in recorded history (Incans had reached much higher altitudes previously; see Llullaillaco). In 1831, Jean Baptiste Boussingault and Colonel Hall reached a new "highest point", estimated to be 6,006 m.

Other failed attempts to reach the summit followed.

On 4 January 1880, the English climber Edward Whymper reached the summit of Chimborazo. The route that Whymper took up the mountain is now known as the Whymper route. Edward Whymper, and his Italian guides Louis Carrel and Jean-Antoine Carrel, were the first Europeans to summit a mountain higher than 20,000 feet (6,100 m). As there were many critics who doubted that Whymper had reached the summit, later in the same year he climbed to the summit again, choosing a different route (Pogyos) with the Ecuadorians David Beltrán and Francisco Campaña.

Activity continued at a medium level until May 2006, when activity increased dramatically, culminating in violent eruptions on 14 July 2006 and 16 August 2006. The 16 August 2006 eruption has been the most violent since activity commenced in 1999. This eruption was accompanied by a 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) high ash plume which spread over an area of 740 by 180 kilometres (460 by 110 mi), depositing ash and tephra to the southwest of the volcano. Several pyroclastic flows were generated that killed at least five people, and destroyed a number of hamlets and roads on the eastern and northwestern slopes of the volcano.

The cake inspired me for the photo because my husband and I have been very happy to eat it ... hahahaha ... Actually life is like cake ... when you have it you have to take advantage of it and enjoy it, sometimes there is and others are not.

Simón Bolívar's poem, 'Mi delirio sobre el Chimborazo', was inspired by the mountain.

What is "My delirium on the Chimborazo"?

Why so much fuss?

During the first week of July 1822, Bolívar saw the snow-capped volcano of Chimborazo from Riobamba. He rode a horse to the slopes and then climbed on foot as far as he could. From there he observed the landscape and was so fascinated, that he later wrote a text called “My Rave about Chimborazo,” which is the rave about his mission in South America. The original has not been found, but a copy that is in the hands of a family from Quito and is the one we all know. Then there was a time when he said he was apocryphal, but we have testimonies in which Bolivar himself shows that he wrote it impacted by the landscape he saw in Ecuador and because it united him with his continental destiny. It is considered the most significant poetic work of the pen of the Liberator. They are the impressions produced by the wonderful sight seen from the Chimborazo, which is a volcano that descended (Alexander von) Humboldt, (Amadeo) Bonpland, all those who passed by and were amazed.

My guide and his girlfriend are driving me to visit their home in Ambato.

Best of all, they went around the gigantic Chimborazo volcano, we are on Vía a Ambato.

This was so unexpected and adorable.

The tour was over.

He showed me a bedroom that I could stay in whenever I come back to Ecuador.

The Venezuelan girlfriend planned my return in a VIP taxi from Ambato to Quito. We drank cachaça and smoke quality weed.

He is adorable.

I miss these two.

El Castillo is the most popular route up the volcano. This route is usually climbed December to February and June to September. This route involves climbing the west side of the volcano. The route starts at Whymper hut to a saddle above El Castillo. From the saddle, there is a glacier ridge then you go to the Veintemilla summit. Veintemilla summit is often the turnaround point for climbers. There is a 30-minute snow filled basin between Veintemilla summit and Whymper summit. Whymper summit is the highest point of the mountain. The El Castillo route takes around eight to twelve hours to ascend and about three to five hours to descend. Climbing Chimborazo is dangerous due to risk of avalanches, the severe weather conditions, and the fact that it is covered in glaciers. Climbing should begin at night in order to reach the summit before sunrise when the snow melts increasing the chance of avalanche and rockfall.

The climb itself demands skill. The climb is often on black ice in which crampons and other high tech climbing equipment are required.

Wedding

Boda

More propitious time for marriage:

In the Middle Ages sought to marry the girl the night of the full moon because they thought they would be blessed with economic abundance and fertility.

Monday was considered a good day to get married, because since pre-Roman Europe on Monday was the day of the Moon, the mother goddess. That tradition then take the Romans.

The adage "on Tuesday or you do not marry shipments (in some places" on Tuesday or will you marry or shipping, or you away from your house ") comes from ancient Rome. Mars was the god of war, so the Romans thought that on Tuesday (the day dedicated to the god) was a day for misfortune, disaster and blood. So, to have a peaceful coexistence is married and a travel ban on Tuesday.

Friday was the day dedicated to Venus, the goddess of beauty and love. She would love that the bride and groom were durable.

Sunday was a blessed day in the pre-Roman Europe, because the day was devoted to the god the Romans called it Sol domínicum, Dominica, sir, 'domineering', god). It was supposed that the Sun God derramaría health, happiness and abundance on the spouses.

Not be married in January (when a lot of cold and famine in Europe), which would have limited economic and all the rest of his life. This superstition is based on the belief that the time that it generates a project affects its development.

Whenever I travel to Alberta, Canada I always take with me two cameras, one for landscapes and the other for wildlife. On this particular day we were heading to Kootenay National Park when my husband spotted this grizzly that was ready to cross the road. He was very smart looking in both directions for cars to cross the road before heading into a river and swimming away. Given how quickly the bear was moving I could not afford to adjust my camera and just began to immediately take photos from inside the car where it was secure and safe.
