Originariament, aquesta església lluïa amb tres àbsides, però el de la esquerra fou sacrificat al s. XVII per a construir-hi la sagristia. Llàstima...
Sembla que les esglesies dedicades a Sant Cugat tenen certa vinculació amb el millor del romanic català. Aquesta NO és Sant Cugat del Vallès, pero tot i ser molt més petita, es una de les joies (desconegudes) del romanic a Catalunya.
Es tracta de Sant Cugat del Racó, a ponent de Navàs, al Bages. Inicialment coneguda com a Sant Cugat de Castelladrall o Sant Cugat Salou (perquè era un alou o establiment del monestir de Ripoll). No fou coneguda com "del Racó" fins al s. XVII.
Tot i estar només envoltada per dues o tres cases, és un temple espectacular, on clarament Ripoll hi invertí força. L'esglesia actual (la 2ª documentada) data del s. XI, en estil romanic llombard. Té planta de creu grega amb tres absides a llevant (un va desapareixer al s. XVII per fer-hi la sagristia), campanar de cadireta i un magnific cimbori cilindric, únic a Catalunya. La porta és d'època gòtica.

Originally, this church was built with three apses, making it perfect. Unfortunately, the left-side one was destroyed to make room for the sacristy in the XVII Century.
This gorgeous, little, and lonely church is one of the (unknown) Romanesque jewels in Catalonia.
This is Sant Cugat del Racó, west of Navàs, in central Catalonia. Initially known as Sant Cugat de Castelladrall or Sant Cugat Salou (because it was an "alou" or establishment of the monastery of Ripoll). It was not known as "del Racó" until the XVII Century.
For the pun in the title, "Racó" means corner in Catalan.
Despite being surrounded by only two or three houses among the countryside, it is a spectacular temple, in which Ripoll clearly invested a lot. The current church (the 2nd documented) dates from the XI Century, in Lombard Romanesque style. It has a Greek cross plan with three apses to the east (one disappeared in the 17th century to make way for the sacristy), a steeple bell tower and a magnificent cylindrical dome, unique in Catalonia (all the others of this era are polygonal. The door is from the Gothic period.

Durant la guerra civil, molts habitants d'aquesta, i de les poblacions properes, s'hi van refugiar dels bombardejos aèris que van caure per la zona (Ribera d'Ebre). Les coves, eren molt més segures que les poblacions, donat que aquestes, les coves, quedaven amagades per la densa vegetació.
M'oblidava de dir que aquestes dues imatges me les ha cedit amablement l'Àngel Llauradó, un bon amic de la familia

L'Autodrom de Terramar, a Sitges, és un espai força unic: un dels cirquits de carreres més antics del món, i un dels pocs de tipus oval d'Europa. De fet, és el 4rt cirquit automobilistic més antic del món (el 3er d'Europa), i el que té corbes amb pendent més pronunciat. Els altres 3 eren Brooklands a Anglaterra, Monza a Italia, i Indianapolis als Estats Units!!!
Data del 1923, i havia de ser el centre d'un gran espai de luxe i descans que inclouria xalets de luxe i un casino. Però només es va construir el circuit... i rapidament va tenir problemes economics. S'hi varen fer curses de cotxes i motos fins el 1932. La guerra civil i la miseria de la postguerra acabaren amb tota activitat automobilistica i els terrenys es destinaren a usos agricoles.
El 2009 la pista i la graderia es varen restaurar i s'hi han fet alguns esdeveniments, rodatges d'anuncis i fins hi tot curses de classics.

The Autodrom de Terramar, in Sitges (Catalonia), is a quite unique space: one of the oldest racing circuits in the world, and one of the few oval-type circuits in Europe. In fact, it is the 4th oldest motor racing circuit in the world (the 3rd in Europe), and the one with the steepest curves. The other 3 were Brooklands in England, Monza in Italy, and Indianapolis in the United States!!!
It dates from 1923, and was to be the center of a large space of luxury and relaxation that would include luxury villas and a casino. But only the circuit was built... and it quickly ran into financial problems. Car and motorbike races were held there until 1932. The civil war and post-war poverty put an end to all automotive activity and the land was used for agricultural purposes.
In 2009, the track and stands were restored and some events, commercial filming, TV programs like The Grand Tour (with Jeremy Clarkson) and even classic races have been held there.

Foto presa amb una càmera Agfa Billy-Clack 74, fabricada entre 1934 i 1940; pel·licula Original Wolfen NP100, revelada amb Rodinal 1/10 durant 47 minuts. Tant Wolfen com el Rodinal eren produits per Agfa fins 1945, o sigui que és una imatge completament Agfa, en esperit. Aquesta és la càmera que apareix al climax de la pel·licula bèlica sovietica "Vine i mira" (Idi i Smodry), 1985. Vaig triar aquesta càmera per a fer aquesta foto com a vincle amb aquesta pelicula i els crims nazis mostrats allà i en el món real.
L'edifici de les cambres de gas de Majdanek és complexe i diferent d'altres exemples coneguts, pel que no va ser fins que el vaig visitar que el vaig entendre. De fet, fins el 1946 l'estructura era lleugerament diferent (però que això no dongui ales als negacionistes). A la part frontal hi ha una serie de cambres dedicades a "processar" els presoners nous: desvestir-se, dutxar-se i sales per desinfectar roba (amb Zyklon-B, també). Però a la part final del edifici hi ha 3 habitacions no de fusta com la resta sino de maons i ciment, incloent el sostre. Son les cambres de gas per al extermini de presoners. Actualment el mateix sostre continua des de la part "no mortal" del edifici vers les cambres de gas, però fins 1946 tenien un sostre separat, molt més alt, com un cobert. El que va passar fou que ja després de la guerra una tempesta va fer malbé part d'aquesta estructura de fusta i es decidí desmantellar-la. Tot està documentat fotogràficament, pel que no és cap conspiració. Ja detallaré les cambres de gas més endavant, en fotografies digitals (ja que és massa fosc per film).

Al sudoest de la ciutat de Lublin hi ha el inmens camp de concentració de Majdanek (tot i que el seu nom oficial alemany era KZ Lublin). La seva inmensitat i construcció completament en fusta recorda molt a Auschwitz II (Birkenau), probablement perquè ambdós tenien un objectiu teoric inicial semblant (camp per presoners de guerra-esclaus d'origen sovietic). Però evolucionaren de manera molt diferent. Majdanek és, encara que costi de creure, més gran que Birkenau (el vaig recorrer de punta a punta i ho vaig poder comprovar); i a sobre només representa 1/5 part de la seva superficie teorica original.
El seu paper fou ambivalent. Començà, el juliol de 1941, com a camp de concentració com a reserva de ma d'obra esclava, principalment jueus, així com centre de classificació i distribució de tot el material robat a les victimes de la Aktion Reinhard. La duresa del treball i les malalties incrementaren la mortaldat i es construiren cambres de gas i més tard, un forn crematori. Les cambres de gas son una mena d'hibrid entre els models de monoxid de carboni de la Aktion Reinhard, que logicament tenien com a referent, però també agafaren elements ja provats a Auschwitz, pel que podien fer servir, també Zyklon-B.
Un dels fets essencials per donar importancia a Majdanek es que va caure en mans sovietiques bastant per sorpresa, el 23 de juliol de 1944, i els nazis no varen poder destruir ni les cambres de gas ni els forns crematoris (tot i que incendiaren l'edifici de fusta d'aquests). Això exposà a ulls del món per primer cop un camp de concentració "gros". Unes 80.000 persones moriren a Majdanek, tot i que algunes fonts citen el doble.
Amb tot val la pena recordar que els sovietics, que per una part mostraren els horrors nazis de Majdanek, el que portà a que fos el primer KZ museitzat del món (just pocs mesos despres del alliberament!), per altra banda I AL MATEIX TEMPS el varen fer servir per reprimir als polonesos desafectes al nou regim comunista, fins a inicis del 1945, en que els deportaren cap al Gulag.
Aquesta foto forma part de tot un viatge pel centre de Polònia, enfocat especialment en els més tragics moments del Holocaust i la II Guerra Mundial, que esclafà Polonia com pocs llocs, però que alhora contrasta amb l'increible renaixement del país fins al moment actual.

Photo taken with an Agfa Billy-Clack 74 camera, manufactured between 1934 and 1940; Original Wolfen NP100 film, stand developed in Rodinal for 47 minutes. Both Wolfen and Rodinal were made by Agfa before 1945, so this is a completely Agfa picture, in a way. This is the camera that appears in the climax of the Soviet war film "Come and See" (Idi i Smodry), 1985. I chose this camera to take this photo as a link to this film and the Nazi crimes shown there and in the real world.
The Majdanek gas chamber building is complex and different from other known examples, so it wasn't until I visited it that I understood it. In fact, until 1946 the structure was slightly different (but don't let that give wings to the negationists). In the front part there are a series of rooms dedicated to "processing" new prisoners: undressing, showering and rooms for disinfecting clothes (with Zyklon-B, too). But at the end of the building there are 3 rooms not made of wood like the rest but of bricks and cement, including the roof. These are the gas chambers for the extermination of prisoners. Currently the same roof continues from the "non-lethal" part of the building towards the gas chambers, but until 1946 they had a separate roof, much higher, like a shed. What happened was that after the war a storm damaged part of this wooden structure and it was decided to dismantle it. Everything is documented photographically, so it's not a conspiracy. I'll detail the gas chambers later, in digital photos (as it's too dark for film).

Southwest of the city of Lublin is the immense concentration camp of Majdanek (although its official German name was KZ Lublin). Its immensity and entirely wooden construction are very reminiscent of Auschwitz II (Birkenau), probably because both had a similar initial theoretical objective (camp for prisoners of war-slaves of Soviet origin). But they evolved in very different ways. Majdanek is, although it is hard to believe, larger than Birkenau (I walked it from end to end and was able to verify this); and on top of that it only represents 1/5 of its original theoretical area.
Its role was ambivalent. It began, in July 1941, as a concentration camp as a reserve of slave labor, mainly Jews, as well as a center for sorting and distributing all the material stolen from the victims of Aktion Reinhard. The harshness of the work and diseases increased the mortality rate and gas chambers were built and later, a crematorium. The gas chambers are a kind of hybrid between the carbon monoxide models of Aktion Reinhard, which they logically had as a reference, but they also took elements already tested in Auschwitz, so they could use, also Zyklon-B.
One of the essential facts to give importance to Majdanek is that it fell into Soviet hands quite by surprise, on July 23, 1944, and the Nazis were unable to destroy either the gas chambers or the crematoriums (although they burned down the wooden building of these). This exposed a "large" concentration camp to the world's eyes for the first time. About 80,000 people died in Majdanek, although some sources cite twice as many.
However, it is worth remembering that the Soviets, who on the one hand showed the Nazi horrors of Majdanek, which led to it being the first KZ museum in the world (just a few months after the liberation!), on the other hand AND AT THE SAME TIME used it to repress Poles disaffected with the new communist regime, until early 1945, when they deported them to the Gulag.
This photo is part of a trip through central Poland, focused especially on the most tragic moments of the Holocaust and World War II, which devastated Poland like few places, but which at the same time contrasts with the incredible rebirth of the country up to the present day.

So it has been awhile since I have posted anything but work has left me with little spare time. I recently watched the whole first season of Attack on Titan and had to make an Eren Mini-fig. La gran majoria de barracons de birkenau, sobretot al sector B.II i l'inacabat B.III, eren de fusta. Les SS necessitaven construir un inmens nombre de barracons, i aprofitaren un preexistent model de estables militars prefabricats (Pferdestallbaracke). Però en comptes de 48 caballs, uns 500 a 900 presoners malvivien i morien aqui dintre, amb terra de fang, quasi sense finestres ni caleffacció. Quasi cada nit hi havia morts, en especial al hivern.
Auschwitz. Què més puc dir més enllà d’aquest toponim en alemany d’una vila polonesa. Tots ja sabeu què fou, de 1940 a 1945. Aquí es creà un camp de concentració per la explotació salvatge i mortal dels enemics del III Reich. Però sobretot a partir de 1943 i a la seva extensió (i futur camp independent) de Birkenau: l’extermini dels jueus europeus a nivell industrial.
Birkenau, o Auschwitz II, fou la expansió massiva del camp original (després conegut com Auschwitz I) a partir de 1942, inicialment amb el proposit d'explotar l'influx massiu de presoners de guerra sovietics, però que aviat va canviar cap a camp d'extermini per als jueus europeus, francesos, holandesos, grecs i sobretot, polonesos i hongaresos. Les cambres de gas de Birkenau començaren a funcionar el març de 1942 i no pararen fins octubre de 1944. Finalment, el camp fou alliberat el 21 de gener de 1945. Els nazis hi assassinaren més de 1.300.000 persones, la gran majoria just baixar dels trens, i la gran majoria, jueus...

The vast majority of birkenau barracks, especially in sector B.II and the unfinished B.III, were made of wood. The SS needed to build an immense number of barracks, and they took advantage of a pre-existing model of prefabricated military stables (Pferdestallbaracke). But instead of 48 horses, about 500 prisoners, and up to 900(!) lived and died in here, with mud floors, almost no windows or heating. Almost every night there were some who did not survive, specially in freezing winter.

Attack on Titan (進撃の巨人 Shingeki no Kyojin) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. The story centers around the lives of Eren Yeager, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert, who live in a world where the remnants of the human population live inside cities surrounded by enormous walls due to the sudden appearance of the Titans, gigantic humanoid creatures who devour humans seemingly without reason. Admeto que aquesta càmera la vaig comprar purament pel punt friki de "ser" una llauna de cervesa. Heineken, concretament. En principi la càmera funciona, en tota la seva senzillesa; però dubto que mai la faci servir.
Fou fabricada a Hong Kong per Ginfax, segurament als anys 90. Altres models eren llaunes de Coca-cola, Kirin, Carlsberg, Budweiser, Carling, Warsteiner, Fanta i Pepsi.

I admit that I bought this camera purely for the geeky point of “being” a can of beer. Heineken, specifically. In principle the camera works, in all its simplicity; but I doubt I will ever use it.
It was made in Hong Kong by Ginfax, probably in the 1990's. Other models were cans of Coke, Kirin, Carlsberg, Budweiser, Carling, Warsteiner, Fanta and Pepsi.

La segona de les proves de la Ermanox va emprar el dorsal porta-pel·licula de la marca Rollex que vaig trobar en venda amb la Ernemann Heag XV. Per desgracia, aquest porta-pel·licula està en molt mal estat, rebregat, amb parts perdudes, fuites de llum i a sobre, ratlla la emulsió. En aquestes primeres proves em vaig trobar amb multitud de fuites de llum, que afortunadament he quasi eliminat del tot amb pedaços de papers de rodets de format 120. El que no he pogut eliminar son les rascades a la emulsió.
Aquest retrat, tot i les fuites de llum, encara és mínimament presentable, ja que vaig avançar la pel·licula al interior de casa; però les fotos exteriors eren un desastre absolut.

The second of the Ermanox tests now focused on the the Rollex 127 format film back that I found for sale with the Ernemann Heag XV. Unfortunately, this film back is in very poor condition, wrinkled, with lost parts, light leaks and on top of that, it scratches the emulsion. In these first tests I found a lot of light leaks, which fortunately I almost completely removed with patches of 120 backing paper. What I could not remove are the scratches on the emulsion.
This portrait, despite the light leaks, is still minimally presentable, as I advanced the film inside the house; but the outside photos were an absolute disaster.

Els objectius d'aquell dia eren clars, el Teco de Transfesa Rail entre Portugal i Constantí i el de Takargo en el sentit invers, però a part ens havien informat d'algunes altres circulacions, com aquest químic entre Torrelavega i Constantí, el qual anava just al darrera del tren de Transfesa. Enviar des d'aquí una salutació a Carlos, amb qui vam matinar de valent per arribar a La Riba encara sense llum.

Here is my custom figure of Eren from the Attack on Titan anime, based on his appearance during his time in the Cadet Corps.
I loved this anime, and Eren was an awesome character. For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, please go watch it, you will not regret it!
Anyway, this figure features lots of custom sculpting - the hair and clothing was all sculpted by me. The 'blade holsters' are made using sheet styrene, and the gas canisters are from a Tiny Tactical Flamethrower backpack. The 'swords' are made using Tiny Tactical Glocks as a base, with extra trigger guards and Brickarms M67 Cooking Handle and styrene for the blade itself. The ODM Gear is made using two Tiny Tactical gas masks and two Tiny Tactical suppressors.
This is only the second time I've painted a face, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. I painted this figure with Citadel and Vallejo paints. The logo on his back is hand painted, and I am very proud of it. I hope you like it as much as I do!
The 'blade holsters' are articulated with the ball-joint method, which I will explain in the showcase tomorrow.

A finals del s. XIX es va inventar la pel·licula de 35mm que ràpidament es va convertir en l'estandard del cinema profesional. Té una gran qualitat, però és car i les càmeres que el fan servir son pesades i molt cares, en general.
Pertant, el 1923, Kodak llençà un nou format pensat per als amateurs, el cinema de 16mm (la meitat que el de 35mm). Les càmeres son molt més petites i barates, però aixi i tot, a partir de la gran depresió de 1929, les vendes no eren tant grans com s'esperava, i Kodak de nou llençà, el 1932, un tercer format encara més amateur i petit, el 8mm, després conegut com a regular-8 o doble-8 (per a diferenciar-lo del Super-8 dels anys 60).
Per al llençament del de la pel·licula de 8mm, Kodak creà alhora 3 models de càmera, coneguts com a Ciné-Kodak Eight, models 20, 25 i 60. Es diferenciaven entre ells sobretot en la qualitat del objectiu que empraven.
Aquesta en concret és una "model 20", la més barata. Monta un objectiu Kodak Anastigmat f3.5 de 13mm no intercanviable, i té una única velocitat de 16fps. Aquest model es va produir entre 1932 i 1941. Curiosament, aquesta càmera en concret fou produida a Rochester (NY) per al Txecoslovaquia en concret, ja que té les indicacions en txec. No he vist enlloc que existís aquesta variant idiomàtica concreta. Pel num. de serie que comença amb "C", sembla fabricada a inicis de la producció, cap a 1933-34.

At the end of the 19th century 35mm film was invented, which quickly became the standard for professional cinema. It has great quality, but it is expensive and the cameras that use it are heavy and very expensive, in general.
Therefore, in 1923, Kodak released a new format designed for amateurs, 16mm film (half that of 35mm). Cameras are much smaller and cheaper, but still, after the Great Depression of 1929, sales were not as great as expected, and Kodak again released, in 1932, an even more amateur third format and small, the 8mm, later known as regular-8 or double-8 (to differentiate it from the Super-8 of the 60s).
For the release of the 8mm film, Kodak created at the same time 3 camera models, known as Ciné-Kodak Eight, models 20, 25 and 60. They differed from each other mainly in the quality of the lens they used.
This particular one is VERY UNUSUAL; it's a "model 20", the cheapest. It mounts a non-interchangeable 13mm Kodak Anastigmat f3.5 lens, and has a single speed of 16fps. This model was produced between 1932 and 1941. What makes it special is that this particular camera was produced in Rochester (NY) for Czechoslovakia specifically, as it has the instructions in Czech. I have not seen anywhere that this particular language variant existed. The Kodak delegation in Prague, was located in Vodičkova 31. By the serial number that starts with "C", it seems to have been manufactured at the beginning of production, around 1933-34.
