The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length.

It is officially Spring! Welcome to Spring (in the Northern Hemisphere) or Autumn (in the Southern Hemisphere). The Equinox marks equal periods of day and night across most latitudes on Earth.

Autumn Equinox what better than to be at an ancient stone circle together with a Sun Worshipper/Druid, can you spot him?
Happy Umbellifer Wednesday and Happy Autumn Equinox....from now until March we will have less light than dark. Which isn't all bad, not for the first few weeks anyway while it's still a novelty! I like this time of year....everything gets gradually darker and quieter with a slowing pace. And- The Great British Bake Off started this week. What more could you want?!
I've been sadly neglecting my Umbellifers Unlimited group for the last few months (or should that be years?! Maybe!) so here is a Wild Carrot (aka Queen Anne's Lace) which I've played around with to make a more Autumnal style to suit my mood today.
Hope everyone's having a great week :)

"L'equinozio d'autunno segna l'inizio dell'autunno astronomico nell'emisfero boreale. In questo istante, il Sole attraversa l'equatore celeste, passando dall'emisfero settentrionale a quello meridionale, e i due emisferi ricevono una quantità di luce quasi equivalente . Il termine "equinozio" deriva dal latino aequinoctium, composto da aequus (uguale) e nox (notte), indicando che giorno e notte hanno durate quasi simili, anche se non esattamente 12 ore a causa della rifrazione atmosferica e della definizione di alba e tramonto"
Wishing everyone a joyful autumn!

Happy Equinox, dear Flickr Friends ♥
Take care, my friends ♥
Being the Spring equinox (well here in the Southern Hemisphere anyway) I thought some florally pastely whimsy might be appropriate. Hit 30C today, yay! Time to start swimming on the beaches instead of just photographing them.
Fun fact about the equinox. As you know it marks the tipping point from days being shorter than nights, to days becoming longer than nights. BUT .., days and nights are equal in length (each 12 h) for the southern hemisphere two or three days before the technical spring equinox and most of Australia sees about 12 h 8 min. of daylight on the spring equinox itself. This is because our atmosphere refracts sunlight so that we can see the Sun just before it's risen in line with the horizon and just after it's passed below the level of the horizon at sunset. Seeing the sun before it rises! Science amazes , and confuses me!
Happy equinox wherever you are in this fascinating world of ours :)
Winter is over! (In theory)
In London, the Spring or Vernal Equinox is on
Tuesday, 20 March 2018 at 16:15. In the southern hemisphere it will be the opposite season - the Autumnal Equinox.
It marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator, the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth's Equator. Day and Night are approximately equal all over the world at this time. (Equinox means equal night)

Today we have the first long lasting rain since April, a reason to be happy for us and for nature :-)
A bright welcome to Autumn 2018 and a happy beginning of Spring to all my Flickr friends in the southern half of our globe !

This is in my opinion the most impressively shaped and positioned stones at Castlerigg in Cumbria. Wikipedia says "In his study of the stone circles of Cumbria, archaeologist John Waterhouse commented that the site was "one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain."[4]
"Every year, thousands of tourists travel to the site, making it the most visited stone circle in Cumbria. This plateau forms the raised centre of a natural amphitheatre created by the surrounding fells and from within the circle it is possible to see some of the highest peaks in Cumbria: Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Grasmoor and Blencathra."
Today is the Spring Equinox - the periods of light and dark are equal. For me that's definitely something to smile about - HSoS!
Happy arrival of the new season, whether that is Spring or Autumn for you! These days I feel we can't take seasons for granted anymore, so it's important to remind ourselves of how important it is that they keep on turning. May your spring/autumn be... as it should be.

HSS and have a lovely Sunday, Everyone!
To celebrate, I took this picture of some lovely orange berries found in my local park. I believe they're Berberis. Having investigated, they appear to be Berberis Darwinii, or 'Darwin's Barbery'.
They certainly are very prolific, and I loved the autumnal colour.
Thank you to everyone who visits my picture to leave a comment or fave. You're truly appreciated.
Happy Autumn Equinox !

A shot from The Kelpies outside of Falkirk, Scotland. Was looking for a shot that was about equal parts light and shadow for a post today, not sure if I found one but I am pleased that it is the Vernal Equinox today. From today we get more and more daylight in the northern hemisphere. Phew. Winter is over and astronomical spring has sprung!
An old shot and an old edit from April 2018. Stay safe all!
