Downhill from the Theatre, the wadi widens to create a larger thoroughfare. To the right, the great massif of Jebel Al Khubtha looms over the valley. Within its west-facing cliffs are burrowed some of the most impressive burial places in Petra, known collectively as the ‘Royal Tombs’. They look particularly stunning bathed in the golden light of sunset.

The Royal Tombs are reached via a set of steps that ascends from the valley floor, near the Theatre. A worthwhile hike from the Royal Tombs leads up to the numerous places of worship on the flattened High Place of Jebel Khubtha, together with a spectacular view of the Treasury. The steps are easily visible between the Palace Tomb and the Sextius Florentinus Tomb. The Royal Tombs can also be reached via the adventurous hike through Wadi Muthlim.

“Epic” was the word that kept springing to mind as I looked at this scenery in Gudvangen, Norway, while waiting for the boat to take us on a cruise along the fjord.

Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes

C'est le troisième plus gros rongeur du monde après le capybara et le castor. Espèce rare en France, le porc-épic aurait été introduit dans le sud de l'Europe à l'époque romaine. C'est une espèce protégée en Europe depuis 1988.

Un porc-épic possède jusqu’à 30 000 piquants aux pointes aiguisées. Le ventre, recouvert uniquement de soies raides, constitue le point faible de l’animal lors d’une agression. La stratégie de défense du rongeur s’appuie d’abord sur un effet dissuasif avec l’érection de la crinière située sur le haut du crâne. Si l'intrus insiste, le porc-épic pousse des grognements, gratte le sol, fait tinter sa queue et passe à l’attaque. Son dos et sa croupe étant les plus piquants, l’animal se déplace à reculons ou latéralement, en présentant son postérieur puis il dégaine sa queue épineuse. Les longues pointes, qui se détachent facilement, pénètrent alors dans la peau de l’adversaire. Les petits crochets placés au bout des piquants s’ouvrent et progressent dans la chair au point parfois de provoquer une septicémie, infection généralisée potentiellement mortelle.

There is an old adage in photography that states, "f8 and be there". How else can I explain this epic sunset photo? As it happened, my location was ideal to catch the light that seemed to arch over the clouds. While it appeared to billow in puffy sections above, a very different looking mass appeared at the center point below.

The rest fell into place as the magic of nature unfolded above my water side perch. In an attempt to properly title this shot, the word "epic" kept coming up. Having photographed this location multiple times over many years, this is the most astonishing light I have captured here, to date.

I think this must be 33 ft Epic schooner built in 2014 designed by Ed Louchard. It was built by the Community Boat Project which has sought for over a decade to create the ultimate non-motorized educational vessel. Schooner-rigged, rowing 8 oars and capable of the multi-day unsupported sailing expedition, Epic is an ultimate teaching platform for all ages. Its home port is Port Hadlock, WA.
