Wild strands of artichoke thistle grow between the runways at the former El Toro MCAS. Although it is very interesting to look at, this non-native species is quite invasive and will be eradicated and replaced with native plants when the Orange County Great Park is constructed.
The preliminary master plan for the Orange County Great Park design is now available. Check out the "Canyon Fly-Through" simulation.

Thursday morning we walked from Tyee Road to the Selkirk Trestle, Upon our return we photographed the stacker-reclaimer under construction in the United Engineering yard. The Times Colonist, p13; July 28 2020 has a good update on the project.
N.B. This article stated incorrectly the gross shipping weight will be 231 tonnes. They left the one off the front -- it's more like 1231 tonnes. (twelve hundred thirty-one).

The Panjin rice field is on the other side of the Red Beach (See my photo of the Red Beach posted). This image includes a watch tower where visitors can have a good view of the field. It is an unusual place where crab farming and rice planting are done together in the paddy field.
Last evening there was a sharp evening showers in Bangalore - en effect of cyclone Nargis in the Bay of Bengal.
Major roads were flooded, leading to traffic jams in several areas. Many trees were up rooted; many cars damaged; Huge power cut in city.

On the top floor of the Jinshan Trading Malls are a men's barbers and a woman's hair salon. The current occupants are mostly guys in their early 20s from Congo-Kinshasa, but they're leaving, been here six months, made some money, but had enough of the hassle of police, security guards, and visa renewal. The problem is also one of cultural adjustment; they can't speak any Chinese, don't like Chinese food, find it hard to make friends with Chinese girls, and they're missing the lifestyle of their home city Kinshasa, one of Africa's main centres for music and culture. While the loud melodic Congolese music brings variety to a corner of bland trading mall, their non-stop singing, dancing and general exuberance is largely lost on the more conservative locals. A week later they are gone, and new people are running the barbers and salon.

African traders line the road at Sanyuanli. Clocking off time, after the customers have left, is when the police do their raids, and the most dangerous time for those without visas to get caught. Groups of guys wait in the open, in groups, ready to make a getaway or else jump into a taxi or hired van to take them to their homes in the distant suburbs.

Installed on Broad St on both sides is this new ePaper Real-time displays. They were having slight connection problems at times but when they worked must say find in a much better layout than the existing displays. Showing all routes giving much better information to passengers.

This morning I got up early and jumped with my camera and my trusty tripod to document, for my family and my friends far from home, the moment when I opened "DOMINICAL", the sunday magazine of "ULTIMAS NOTICIAS" newspaper, where I had the honor to appear withs talented friends in a special report "Venezuelans on Flickr"

The largest school of jewellery in Europe, this world-renowned school boasts industry standard equipment and resources and is located right in the heart of the city's famous Jewellery Quarter, where much of the jewellery made in the UK today is manufactured.
In Jan/Feb 2011 this image had a large number of hits from an Unknown Source. Despite trying to track down the source of the visits I've not yet found it. Dancing to live Nigerian "afro-beat" music at a nightclub 30 km out from Guangzhou centre in one of the many new suburbs that sprawl across the Pearl River Delta. Many said they preferred living out here to the city proper, pace of life more like Africa, buildings low-rise, the locals more welcoming, and the police friendlier. Estimates of numbers of Africans in this suburb were around 5000.

So the local paper then...? Well, yes and no. Guangdong Province has a population bigger than Germany after all, and the daily circulation of the paper is somewhere between 1 and 2 million, about 5 times the size of The Guardian's circulation, with online readership taking this higher of course. Although not sold outside Guangdong, the paper, and its sister paper Southern Weekend have, thanks to a degree of autonomy from Beijing-rule made possible through Guangdong's booming economy (at least it was booming until 2008...) forged a reputation within China for their reformist agenda and hard-hitting journalism, and are somewhat infamous for having their editors sacked. As well my inclination that they are on the right side of China's ongoing open-up-close-down internal power struggle, the chance to have the story published locally, where it might actually have an effect on people's perceptions of their own city and its newest residents, was also a factor in allowing them to publish it. I still hope it'll be possible to publish it in foreign media too, however it's not easy as a freelancer just starting out given the current economic climate.

Washington Crossing the Delaware are three 1851 oil-on-canvas paintings by the German-American artist Emanuel Leutze.
The paintings commemorate General George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River with the Continental Army on the night of December 25–26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. That action was the first move in a surprise attack and victory against Hessian forces at the Battle of Trenton in New Jersey on the morning of December 26.
The original was part of the collection at the Kunsthalle in Bremen, Germany, and was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1942, during World War II. Leutze painted two more versions, one of which is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The other was in the West Wing reception area of the White House in Washington, D.C., but in March 2015, was purchased and put on display at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona, Minnesota.

The current occupants are mostly guys in their early 20s from Congo-Kinshasa, but they're leaving, been here six months, made some money, but had enough of the hassle of police, security guards, and visa renewal. The problem is also one of cultural adjustment; they can't speak any Chinese, don't like Chinese food, find it hard to make friends with Chinese girls, and they're missing the lifestyle of their home city Kinshasa, one of Africa's main centres for music and culture. While the loud melodic Congolese music brings variety to a corner of bland trading mall, their non-stop singing, dancing and general exuberance is largely lost on the more conservative locals. A week later they are gone, and new people are running the barbers and salon.
