FGM in Europe: Facts
* Up to 500,000 girls and women living in the European Union are affected or threatened by FGM.
* 75,000 of them live in Great Britain, 65,000 in France, 30,000 in Germany.
* The victims are migrants, whose families took along this practice when they immigrated.
* In spite of the fact that FGM is in most European countries either directly or indirectly prohibited, the laws are either incomplete or they are not enforced. The only country in which legal proceedings in connection with Female Genital Mutilation have ever been instituted, is France.
* Most European countries hardly invest in awareness training and in investigations.
* There are no effective cross-border measures against Female Genital Mutilation. Any efforts – which vary tremendously in their degree – take place within the country borders. FGM is still not considered to be a European problem.
* The victims are usually approached in the health sector and by authorities in an inadequate way, ignorance prevails.
* FGM is in hardly any European country a regular part of the vocational training of doctors, midwives and social workers.
* No European country explicitly accepts the threat of genital mutilation as a reason for asylum

A UK aid supported UNICEF-UNFPA Joint Programme conducted focus groups with community representatives in Burkina Faso on the practice of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting. They asked the programme to include teaching about FGM/C in pre-schools.
In some communities in Burkina Faso, FGM/C is carried out when during a child's primary school years. If children are aware that it is harmful they can report cases and seek help to prevent the practice.

Globally, at least 200 million girls and women have been cut and more than 30 million girls are at risk over the next decade.
Mercy has avoided FGM thanks to UK aid supported work by the UN Joint Programme.
“I’m very happy I won’t be cut,” she says. “I know that you can bleed and get infections.
“Swahili and science are my favourite subjects and I like to run. I want to be a lawyer when I grow up.”
UK aid supports the Pastoralist Child Foundation via the UN Joint Programme. The Pastoralist Child Foundation — or PCF — aims to end FGM and child marriage in Kenya through community action and education. It’s managed by young, educated women and men and respected Samburu warriors.

This International Day for Zero Tolerance towards Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) on 6th February, we want to break the silence around FGM/C and make a statement that can’t be ignored.
FGM/C is one the worst kinds of violence against girls and women. Globally more than 125 million girls and women have undergone FGM/C and 30 million girls are at risk of being cut over the next decade. Girls and women around the world have suffered a lifetime of damage, sometimes even death, as a result of this practice.
We believe that FGM/C can end in one generation – but we also recognise this is a huge task – and we all need to work together to make this a reality. UK aid is supporting peer education through the UNICEF and UNFPA Joint Programme in Burkina Faso and across Africa. In Burkina Faso, more than 75% of girls and women have been cut. But work to reverse this trend is proving successful – community meetings, peer education and a law banning the practice have helped to reduce the numbers of girls getting cut by 31%.

Margaret Onah is Executive Director at Safehaven Development Initiative. She is a passionate and committed advocate of women and children’s rights.
Father-of-four, traditional village chief Jean-Clode Bounkoungou led the fight against FGM in his community in central Burkina Faso. He didn't cut any of his three daughters and is proud his village has abandoned the practice.
UNFPA has supported training programs in several parts of Kenya to teach the dangers of FGM, making some of the former circumcisers to abandon the practice while becoming anti-female genital mutilation advocates.

On March 15, the U.S. State Department released the "US Global Strategy to Empower Adolescent Girls" - a comprehensive interagency strategy solely focused on the protection and advancement of adolescent girls that will guide U.S. foreign policy. Equality Now is proud to be part of the team that actively advocated for the strategy and to have interacted with those who drafted it. Thanks in large part to our efforts, female genital mutilation (FGM), sex trafficking, and reference to laws and access to justice, are included.
With this new strategy, and government leadership, girls around the world now stand a better chance of having their needs met—in stand-alone programming but also through coordinated interagency efforts to incorporate girls across all issue areas.
