American Queen Steamboat Company purchased American Empress (formerly Majestic America Line's Empress of the North) in 2013 and completely refurbished the vessel, officially launching it in spring 2014. The paddle-wheel boat is the largest sailing the rivers of the Pacific Northwest. The refurbishment was a dramatic overhaul; public spaces and cabins got new carpet, paint, wallpaper, lighting and general updating. décor, decidedly Victorian with ornate furniture, floral carpeting, brass, frosted glass lampshades, lace curtains and elegant wallpaper, feels rich and elegant.

Yesterday it poured with rain and today, the weather gods smiled on us, making for some impressive falls in the Blue Mountains near Sydney. This is Empress Falls and requires a decent walk to get down to view it but very much worth the effort. While taking photos, some adventurers were abseiling down the falls but were good enough to get out of the way for this shot.
Lyall Cuthbert www.flickr.com/photos/lyallc/ did this composition of Empress Falls recently and I liked it enough to try something similar (but hopefully different enough). All credit goes to him for showing a new angle on a familiar scene. It was great to learn from doing this, so thanks Lyall.

A view at sunset of Victoria's Inner Harbor and this famous Hotel.
Recognized as one of Top 21 Iconic Hotels in the World by National Geographic Traveler magazine, honoured with Travel + Leisure Magazine’s World’s Best Award for Top 10 City Hotels in Canada, and regarded as a Condé Nast Readers’ Choice and Gold List hotel, Fairmont Empress is located in Victoria, BC overlooking the city’s sparkling Inner Harbour.
Opened on 20 January 1908, the Châteauesque-styled building is considered one of Canada's grand railway hotels.

These two rocks just seem to resist any amount of water trying to move them. Luckily they're nicely positioned.

Continuing on the theme of transportation, my morning walk in the Oregon city of The Dalles had another surprise in store for me: Down by the Columbia River, I found this gorgeous classic paddlewheeler named American Empress. She is a large river cruise ship and passengers definitely travel in style on this one! The views of the landscape, including spectacular Mt. Hood, must be fantastic!
The cruises travel from Portland, Oregon, up the Columbia and Snake River all the way to Clarkston at the Washington/Idaho border. The cost is around $3000. She was built in 2002 on Whidbey Island in Washington and has room for 223 passengers.
From this morning's foggy walk. Had to squeeze in one more waterfall before Xmas.
2021 was a crazy year but many thanks to everyone here in Flickrland for piling in and making it seem 1/2 normal. Life would be so much less without you.

the infamous Empress Hotel (and its reflected twin) in Victoria's Inner Harbour last nite as I walked to the Bob Dylan concert..
Bob and his band were fabulous! a nite to remember forever
and no I did not have a camera or a cell phone to record the event!
it is soooooooooo funny, I had a seat in the 6th row on the floor.....so very close to Bob...tho I never sat!!...as did I know that the BIG Bob fans were in this section???, of course!, so I stood and danced the whole concert so I could seeeeeeeee Bob!! and I figured if Bob at age 67 could stand for 2 hours, with no intermission, so could I!! :~)
YES! another item on my bucket list, experienced and a delightful memory!
off to work now, and then to my friend Bryony's art show opening tonight
.....have a fabulous Friday!!
