Running nearly three hours behind schedule, Amtrak Train 6, the eastbound California Zephyr, rolls past the Harlem Avenue station in Berwyn, Illinois. UP 5727, a GE AC44ACM, leads the passenger consist along the BNSF Chicago Subdivision, serving as emergency freight power following apparent issues with the train’s regular motive power. The unusual pairing makes its final approach to Chicago Union Station after a 2,438-mile journey from the West Coast.
The lights were out in most of the U-Street station with one entrance being closed entirely and the other with minimal emergency power as most of the neighborhood went down.
This is a wall between the two sets of doors forming the building entrance--sort of like an airlock. Hence there are doors both to the left and to the right; each is automated, so there are two separate big blue buttons. The red faceplate of the electrical outlet indicates that it is attached to the backup, emergency power supply. The wall looks like a blackboard because it IS a blackboard. I caught it just after it had been cleaned.

A Ram Air Turbine (RAT) is a small turbine that is connected to a hydraulic pump, or electrical generator, installed in an aircraft and used as a power source. The RAT generates power from the airstream due to the speed of the aircraft.
Modern aircraft only use RATs in emergency. In the case of the loss of both primary and auxiliary power sources the RAT will power vital systems (flight controls, linked hydraulics and also flight-critical instrumentation). Some RATs produce only hydraulic power, which is in turn used to power electrical generators.
