HMM......... this is my choice- a colorful possibility for the Macro Mondays group’s theme of circles for 4/19.
the size and context mosaic is in the first comment box.
this portion measures 1 and 3/4th inches at its widest/tallest
I am surrounded by natural leaves at home in my house and garden, but had trouble finding any man-made ones! I'm hoping that this bit of embroidery by my Aunty Gertie many years ago will do, even though it's "woman-made" - HSoS!
When it was my birthday two years agp, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.
Those wonderful gifts are what has inspired me to create this series of "Embroider my World" images featuring my vintage bobbin collection. In this case I am using three of my Dewhurst's Sylko Emerald Green reels of cotton which date from between 1938 and 1954. The three spools sit atop a beautiful complete boxed Victorian era étui from 1865. featuring sterling silver implements with mother-of-pearl handles and a sterling silver thimble which has been gilded and enamelled. The whole set sits neatly in its own emerald green velvet and satin lined box which is affixed with a fine brass clip.
Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.
Appliqued felt and cotton fabrics. Three from a series I am working on.
Each circle is about 5.5" (14cm) diameter.
Niqui has been practicing more hand embroidery, this time Spider-Web stitch with Lazy Daisy stitch surround interspersed with French Knots ..
The whole piece is only 3cm across so there's some fine stitching in there ..

A street portrait of a man in his later years who sits on a chair in the street and makes small embroidered rugs for sale. He is a skilled embroiderer and gets some fun, and makes some money from his artsy craftsy hobby.

Old portrait taken by the photographer Albin Andersson in Karlskoga, Sweden, in 1906 (you can see the year stamped on the photo in the lower right corner - though, truth be told, you can't really see it on this scan). The little girl is standing on an embroidered chair wearing boots and a white dress with ruffles.
had I the heaven's embroidered cloths
enwrought with golden and silver light
the blue and the dim and the dark cloths
of night and light and the half light
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
but I, being poor, have only my dreams
I have spread my dreams under your feet ;
tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Submitted for the Macro Monday theme of "Stitch"
This is the club crest for the team that I follow, Newcastle United Football Club, and the embroidered stitch is far more appealing than the transfers they now use on club shirts. Howay the Lads and HMM
