On this architectural gable from a small stupa, compact narrative reliefs depict scenes from the early life of the Buddha. The topmost is the birth. Emerging from the right side of his mother, who grasps the bough of a tree, the infant (now broken) is received into the hands of the king of the gods. He then miraculously was able to stand and took seven steps.
The topmost rectangular register depicts the bodhisattva Maitreya, who holds a bottle with the elixir of life. According to Buddhist texts, Maitreya will be the next Buddha in the future, and he will have the same biography as our historical Buddha Shakyamuni. The lower three registers depict him as a prince with his wife enjoying music and dance, his decision to leave the palace in the middle of the night, and his departure on horseback to the forest where he will begin his quest to seek enlightenment and liberation from suffering for all beings.
