Several elephant herds came to drink near a bridge across the river in Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa.
We had a great time observing their interaction especially as there were calfs of different ages.

"The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?"
David Attenborough
Let's hope not.
Everyone knows that the largest North American Mammal is the bison, right? More specifically, the Wood Bison...right?
But there is another mammal, the Northern Elephant Seal, that breeds, and gives birth on the coast of North America. And it spends a few weeks each year lying around on North American coastal beaches while molting.
As for size, a smaller adult Elephant Seal Bull weighs in at over 3,000 pounds. The largest ones tip the scales at over 5,000 pounds. A larger bull Wood Bison weighs in at around 2,200 pounds.
I'm just sayin'.
Earlier this month I visited the central California coast for my granddaughter's high school graduation. While there, I visited Point Piedras Blancas where elephant seals often come ashore. A couple here sounding off.

It is estimated that 10000 to 15000 elephants are killed each year. My grandchildren will not be as fortunate as I am to photograph them in the wild. Humans are the most stupid animals around.
Young male elephants, in the same herd, will interact with each other at a relatively early age. As they get older they will play-fight with other young males of a similar age from other families.
They learn their own strength, build knowledge and develop the skills which they will need as mature males. When they reach about 12 to 15 years of age, they will leave the family and drift alone or join other families and later form groups. (Shingwedzi, Kruger National Park, RSA)

I may well not be in Flickr for a little while now, so I thought I'd sign off with a couple of photos this morning. The first being an image from undoubtedly the highlight of 2023, our safari to Kenya. It was taken in the Amboseli National Park and depicts an Elephant family who were on the march towards a water hole.
