Saw several herds on this journey. Efforts underway to stop poaching, but it is an ongoing battle, as the gangs are so well organized.

At first, baby elephants don't really know what to do with their trunks. They swing them to and fro and sometimes even step on them. They will suck their trunk just as a human baby might suck its thumb.
By about 6 to 8 months, calves begin learning to use their trunks to eat and drink. By the time they are a year old, they can control their trunks pretty well and, like adult elephants, use their trunks for grasping, eating, drinking, bathing.

After meeting the westbound Zephyr at Rocky, this BNSF manifest has received a clear route the rest of the way into the yard in Denver. The train is leaving Leyden behind and is crossing the 80th Avenue grade crossing. This is the only grade crossing between North Yard and Leyden that is not a quiet zone crossing.

An Elephant Hawk Moth (Deilephila elpenor) from a moth trap. Ever since I was a boy I've been fascinated by the incredible colour scheme of these moths. I've been experimenting with different approaches to photographing moths from moth traps. As always, often the simplest methods are best. This was just handheld by holding it up to the sky, and using a twin flash with my concave diffuser designs.
