Guiyu is one of the biggest e-waste centers of the world. More than a million ton of e-waste is dismantled in this Chinese village every year. Women, children and man work under terrible conditions to extract all the precious metals from circuit boards, computers, ic's and other electronics.

They often burn the plastics, circuit boards and ic's in open air without protection in order to extract the melted copper or tin. Despite the ratification of the Basel-agreement, a lot of international branded gadgets end up illegally in Guiyu.

ELECTRONIC WASTE: DOD Is Recovering Materials, but Several Factors May Hinder Near-Term Expansion of These Efforts

Note: The chart shows five of the rare earth elements identified by DOD in its 2014 report, Diversification of Supply Chain and Reclamation Activities Related to Rare Earths, and compares their market prices over time as a percentage of their prices in July 2011, when the price for most of these elements reached its peak. These five elements are found in electronics.

This piece of analog waste has aged nicely. What is it? The guts of a circa 1980's tube TV.

In an e-waste dump that kills nearly everything that it touches, Fati, 8, works with other children searching through hazardous waste in hopes of finding whatever she can to exchange for pennies in order to survive. While balancing a bucket on her head with the little metal she has found, tears stream down her face as the result of the pain that comes with the malaria she contracted some years ago. This is work she must do to survive. PHOTOGRAPH COPYRIGHT ©RENÉE C. BYER

According to the Environmental Protection Agency more than 3.2 million tons of electronic waste ends up in landfills each year. Fort Hood recognized that the community needed an avenue to recycle electronic waste and helped establish an ‘e-cycle’ program to accept personal electronics. During FY08 and FY09, the electronic recycling program eliminated more than 130,485 pounds of electronic waste from entering the landfill and also provided material for re-use.

There is money in junked computers. Government patronage will decide who makes it (DOWN TO EARTH cover story, May 16-31, 2010)

India produces about 400,000 tonnes of electronic waste each year, growing exponentially. Handling this is a great challenge. What adds to it is the fact that the country is one of the lead importers of all kinds of waste—hazardous included. Almost all of this is recycled or scrapped by the unorganized sector using the most rudimentary methods that pollute. Our reporters found a thriving ‘illegal’ trade and dangerous working conditions. The environment ministry’s answer has been to grant its first and only licence to import e-waste to a company called Attero Recycling—to encourage its Roorkee plant, which it calls a model. Our reporters found Attero reselling e-waste instead of recycling it. The ministry’s regulatory attempts do not recognize the small players who actually recycle e-waste, found out Ruhi Kandhari and Jyotika Sood with photographer Sayantan Bera.

E-waste is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their "useful life." Computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax machines are common electronic products. Many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled.

With the passage of the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 , certain portions of the electronic waste stream are defined and the systems to recover and recycle them will be administratively regulated beyond the universal waste rules that apply to material handling. Please review CalRecycle's efforts to implement the Act for more information.
