I was standing in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. when I took this photograph between honking cars and speeding bicyclists. I was arrested by the local police because they considered my tripod a dangerous weapon. I was handed over to the Department of Homeland Security, interrogated and labeled as an “enemy combatant” ready to be renditioned to Guantanamo Bay.
That wasn’t even the bad part.
My poor Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera was scanned, swabbed and fingered by some unsavory guys wearing pink shoes, purple smocks and white gloves.
I finally yelled out from the top of my lungs, “Photography is not a crime!” and handed them a copy of this:

They put a black bag over my face and forced me into some vehicle. After an hour or so I was then thrown out of the vehicle and found myself in some place called Freedom Plaza back on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Yes, it’s tough being a travel photographer.
I also have a wild imagination.
None of this is true (but this could be the next Dan Brown novel) with the exception that I really was on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. taking this photograph from Freedom Plaza.
This is a great location to photograph the U.S. Capitol with a city view. It looks like I’m standing in the middle of the road, but actually Pennsylvania Avenue takes a slight bend where the plaza is at so you have a direct view of the Capitol with the traffic coming straight toward you.

It’s been about two months since I returned from my amazing journey in Southeast Asia, but that does not mean I have stopped traveling. Since my return I have traveled to Chicago, Wisconsin and the nation’s capitol Washington, D.C. where I was all last week.
So let me give you a warm welcome to Washington, D.C. otherwise known as the District of Criminals!
I have a confession...I am a recovering political junkie. I use to eat, sleep and talk politics, but thankfully Washington, D.C. cured me of that. The crime, corruption, graft...and I'm just talking about the halls of Congress! Apart from that, Washington, D.C. is a wonderful city, especially if you can squeeze in a visit between its frigid winters and humid summers. Unfortunately, for me that seems like the only time I visit Washington, D.C.
For Washington, D.C. and its politicians it is all about access. Thankfully, for tourists you have free access to all the monuments, memorials, Smithsonian Museums and even the zoo! As a result, you may want to try to squeeze in as much as possible on your visit.
So here’s a photograph where I squeezed in three in one!
Three icons most people recognize of Washington, D.C.: The Lincoln Memorial, The Washington Monument and The United States Capitol. I took this shot in front of the Netherlands Carillon. What and where is that you may ask? It's right next to the Iwo Jima Marine Memorial which is across from D.C. in Arlington, Virginia.
If you take a trip to the nation's capitol just watch out for your wallets, not from the street thieves, but rather from the members of Congress who are full of bloated promises and quick with a phony smile.

The truthful American journalist now most effectively expressing the overwhelmingly dismal consequences of modern casino capitalism is Chris Hedges. This morning - September 26, 2012 - I read his latest essay, which can be found along with the rest of his great work at Truthdig.com. Hedges reminds us, first, that, in the presidential campaign we're now suffering, the two major candidates, Obama & Romney, are spending two & one-half billion dollars to manipulate us with lies.
EXCERPT: We will be assaulted this January when automatic spending reductions, referred to as “the fiscal cliff,” begin to dismantle and defund some of our most important government programs. Mitt Romney will not stop it. Barack Obama will not stop it.
And while Romney has been, courtesy of the magazine Mother Jones, exposed as a shallow hypocrite, Obama is in a class by himself. There is hardly a campaign promise from 2008 that Obama has not broken. This list includes his pledges to support the public option in health care, close Guantanamo, raise the minimum wage, regulate Wall Street, support labor unions in their struggles with employers, reform the Patriot Act, negotiate an equitable peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians, curb our imperial expansion in the Middle East, stop torture, protect reproductive rights, carry out a comprehensive immigration reform, cut the deficit by half, create 5 million new energy jobs and halt home foreclosures. Obama, campaigning in South Carolina in 2007, said that as president he would fight for the right of collective bargaining. “I’d put on a comfortable pair of shoes myself, I’ll … walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States of America,” he said. But when he got his chance to put on those “comfortable pair of shoes” during labor disputes in Madison, Wis., and Chicago he turned his back on working men and women.
Obama, while promising to defend Social Security, also says he stands behind the planned cuts outlined by his deficit commission, headed by Morgan Stanley board member Erskine Bowles and former Sen. Alan Simpson, a Wyoming Republican. The Bowles-Simpson plan calls for cutting 0.3 percentage points from the annual cost-of-living adjustment in the Social Security program. The annual reduction would slowly accumulate. After a decade it would mean a 3 percent cut. After two decades it would mean a 6 percent cut. The retirement age would be raised to 69. And those on Social Security who continued to work and made more than $40,000 a year would be penalized with further reductions. Obama’s payroll tax cuts have, at the same time, served to undermine the solvency of Social Security, making it an easier target for the finance corporations that seek to destroy the program and privatize the funds.

Sorry for the lack in posting lately. Haven't been motivated lately by Chicago. Grey skies and horrible weather. Actually, I've been shooting on my phone a lot more. My bag is heavy enough without camera gear. I guess size really does matter. I try to keep things moving on my instagram regularly so head over there for more updates. Should he win the gubernatorial election in Texas and be elected to a next term, Rick Perry is ready to head to the White House as the Republican nominee. The HIghway campaign to keep the highways free of trash, "Don't Mess with Texas" has been given new meaning as a new slogan and talking point, here on Newsweek's cover to brand Perry as the renegade who has made Texas stand apart. He is taking credit for the fiscal health of Texas at a Black Swan moment when the nation is fighting the Financial Crisis.
The boots are the most uncovered and revealing aspect of his dress, the true American-made style and although the term "cowboy" and the mythic ideas that come with it were used by G.W. Bush, eventually the cowboy image was tarnished not just in the US but worldwide. Now a new cowboy will right the record and remind the world that Texas was once an independent country, a Republic. The boots bear the words "Come and Take It" the cry for battle in the long Texas march, which every Texan learns repeatedly in school on the classes on Texas history, from The Alamo to Gonzales to San Jacinto.
Yep, Perry is using mythical iterations to define his own march in politics, first here, then there, then onward to the White House -- that is the subliminal message.
His image is out there, nationally, even before he goes up against centrist Democrat and Houston Mayor Bill White for the race to the Governor's mansion in Austin, after beating the Texas lady Kay Baily Hutchinson in the Republican run-off.
He's not a has-run as other likely candidates. So... the political communication and branding is on and operating.

In the 2010, the Average Net Worth of the richest U.S. 25 House of Representatives Total 2.1 Billion Dollars, according to data from OpenSecrets.org, Center for Responsive Politics.
Nineteen of the richest House members are Republicans, while six are Democrats. The Republican House members have been the strongest supporters to avoid returning tax rates to their pre-2001 level. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that extending the Bush era tax cuts from 2011-2020 will add $3.3 trillion to the national debt - $2.65 trillion in lost tax revenue and $0.66 trillion for debt interest.
Today taxes are lower than at any point since 1979, and have been credited with growing the government budget deficit, shifting the tax burden from the rich to the middle and working classes, and increasing income inequality without creating domestic economic growth. Unfortunately when controlling government representatives from the House are from the wealthy class, their policies increasingly support the richest rather than the majority of working Americans.

Today I gotta admit, I went to the most fun political rally I have attended in my 13 years of photographing political rallies.....former President Bill Clinton & Bruce Springsteen came to the Cleveland suburb of Parma to stump for President Obama.
President Clinton spoke for about a 1/2 hr then Bruce played a free concert for about 40 minutes or longer. My only regret is that President Clinton didn't bring his sax....I was really hoping to get photos of Bruce singing and Bill playing sax....even Springsteen said that he should have brought his sax, then the people could have seen a real jam session. :)
After the rally I was leaving and saw a group of people standing by the loading dock so I went over to see what was going on. Turns out they were waiting for Bruce to leave. I hung out and within 5 minutes he came out, waved to the crowd, then actually came over and signed autographs, posed for photos, and shook hands with everyone. I got to shake his hand and a guy behind me said, "I'm from Manasquan (a beach town in Jersey), so I said, "I'm from Manalapan" (a rival high school to Bruce's old high school), and he looked at me and said, "Manalapan? We've got some Jersey boys here today!" It was cool. He was very nice and hung out with his fans for quite a while before having to leave to catch his flight.

Obama indicated he supported Gay Marriage during his 1996 Senate campaign yet, his aides later disavowed the questionnaire claiming it did not reflect the Obama's position. Obama wrote, “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages… and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages."
During his 2004 Senate campaign, Obama stated, "I'm a Christian. I do believe that tradition and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."
Apparently, Obama maintained that position through his 2008 presidential campaign until 2010 when Barry began evolving after telling ABC News' Jake Tapper that his feelings about gay marriage were "constantly evolving. I struggle with this."
In October 2011, Barry told ABC's George Stephanopoulos, "I'm still working on it… I think that there's no doubt that as I see friends, families, children of gay couples who are thriving, you know, that has an impact on how I think about these issues."

While Dragula Obama evolved on Same Sex, Mitt Romney ordered town clerks to issue Gay marriage licenses on May 17, 2004 per the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts (Goodridge v. Department of Public Health) ruling on November 18, 2003.

The Massachusetts Moderate with Progressive Views
Romney vowed to protect and expand the rights of gays and lesbians when he ran for Governor in 2002. Mitt also refused to back a proposed state constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage in 2002 because Romney promised that domestic partner benefits would be "hallmark of my leadership as governor," according to the Boston Globe.

On May 17, 2004, Romney enforced the Unconstitutional Supreme Judicial Court Ruling knowing that the 'right to same-sex marriage' was NOT in the Massachusetts Constitution. According to the New York Times, Romney promised the Log Cabin Republicans that he would not champion a fight against same-sex marriage in 2002.
In order to 'legalize' Same-Sex Marriage, four judges of the Supreme Judicial Court ruled Chapter 207 of of the Massachusetts General Laws as unconstitutional yet, the marriage statute (Chapter 207) was never changed, repealed, or suspended. In other words, the Constitutional marriage statute is in full effect and prohibits Same-Sex Marriage.
Romney knew he was violating Chapter 207 Section 48 when he ordered town clerks to issue Gay marriage licenses beginning on May 17, 2004.
