It became known as the "place of wool and hair" because animal hides were traditionally scraped against the rock by the native Navajo Indian Tribe. It was later nicknamed "El Capitan" because of the way the rock formation commands the entrance to Monument Valley.
El Capitan rises nearly 3600 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park. One of the largest exposed pieces of granite in the world, this behemoth attracts rock climbers from around the world. Everyone seeing Yosemite Valley for the first time is truly amazed at the enormous size of El Capitan as it dwarfs everything in its vicinity. But to be ready to gain a sense of scale, do not forget to bring your binoculars in order to spot the rock climbers. They appear as dots, tiny dots, moving along El Capitan's seemingly sheer surface.
This is one of our favorite views in all of Yosemite National Park. Looking across the Merced River and down Yosemite Valley. The river's water was low during this September visit. But the tall grasses on the near bank and low light on El Capitan made the visit worthwhile. I believe the rock spires on the right are the Cathedral Rocks.
Everyone knows that weather makes the best images. Here, there really was no weather to speak of. This was a generic sunny day. Well, time to start using other tactics. In this case, the reflection. Now, a reflection is no easy task on this part of the Merced. Its moving at quite a decent clip. ND filter and slower shutters help. Another trick I used had a few people looking at me like I was crazy, but its something I do a lot- I flip the camera body under the tripod and shot with the body just off the water. If you follow my stuff you hear me talk about this alot. I think it makes the reflections sharper. That might not make any sense, its something about the proximity to the water that does it. Let me know what you think.

Living near Yosemite, I'm there a couple of times a year and I keep going back to this spot. It's my favorite view of the valley. I keep hoping that one day I'll be there and the light, clouds and river will all be perfect and that I'll some how manage to capture it (I hate that term used as a noun for picture). We were there on this January morning freezing our bleeps off. But there are starting to be problems with it. This shot was taken two years ago. Now the saplings growing along the near shore have gotten to the point that one will soon have to wade out into the river to get a clear shot of the valley.

Road trip au Yosemite National Park.
Quasiment le même point de vue que l'image précédente mais cette fois-ci un peu plus tard en fin d'après-midi après avoir fait une jolie rando vers l'Artist Point.

El Capitan one of the most iconic granite walls dominate the west end of Yosemite Valley, a cherished beacon for visitors, photographers and one of the world’s ultimate challenges for climbers.
On our visit watching the climbers scaling the walls and narrow jagged points was quite thrilling! Tho this visit it was 103F extremely hot, humid, and muggy yet, the beauty was worth the visit.
Thank you for your visit, comments, faves and invites.
Have a lovely day!
Pillaging the archives again! I have been fortunate in that for most of my life I have been able to go to Yosemite. (first time-1954) To camp, to hike, weddings, celebrating my birthday every year...etc. And through out those years one of my enduring memories is of the special aura of El Capitan. whether viewed from valley floor, Glacier Point or the cliffs above it, at some point it always gives me that moment where it takes my breath away for a second... and just wow.
Stared in wonder at El Capitan for an hour while shooting star trails under a nearly full moon. I lined up on the shoreline at Cathedral Beach with the moon facing El Capitan. Incredible to be seeing it close-up in person under the moonlight by the Merced river.
tech details: El Capitan: 245s, f5.6, 14mm, ISO 200; blended with the star trails series shot immediately before: 140 photos at 25s, f4, 14mm, ISO 1000 merged using StarStax
Have you watched the Oscar Award winning film "Free Solo" yet? I haven't. I want to watch it on a big screen once I find the time. I also did a "Freeze Solo" a couple years ago when I took this shot of El Capitan at a freezing cold temperature. Yes, I did it solo without harness and all by myself early in the morning. So that should be qualified as solo, right?
This spot is a the top of Sentinel Dome which is the last stop of one of my favorite hikes in the United States. The hike runs from Taft Point, to Roosevelt Point, to Sentinel Dome, and back. Most of the trail is moderate with a few sections that are more steep.
