"7 Through the Nose" will expand upon Josely Carvalho's longstanding work with the olfactory. Participants will explore their own senses of smell and its powerful relationship to memory and emotion. Starting in Times Square, taking the subway and then sniffing through Flushing, the group will identify synthetic smells (i.e. smells created to entice sales: such as french fries and store-specific fragrances) and existing natural urban smells, (i.e.sweat, herbs, fish, bread and urine). Via memory, metaphor and association, Josely will work with each participant to record smells in individual and collective scent journals; an evanescent geography of odors.
Each walk holds 10 people.

Elastic City LLC is the ongoing project of Todd Shalom. He realized the idea for Elastic City while suffering from altitude sickness in Cusco, Peru. A New York native, Todd was living in Argentina in 2007/8, making sound and performance work and figured that it was about time that he combine his interests in a way that was actually sustainable. He returned to New York in 2008 to focus on this work.
Elastic City intends to make its audience participants in an ongoing exchange about ways that we experience the places that we live and visit. Insert art language here. Blah blah some theory but not heavy just concepts with some juice thrown in.

Semi precious stone. Elastic, strong comfortable Slave bracelet. The beads are thread on a strong elastic cord. That makes them comfortable to wear, as they follow your hands movement.

We'll return to Orangeburg, NY on the 25th anniversary that my family moved from Rutgers Road East, site of our first home til I was 9. We'll park the car near the cemetery and walk through the winding suburban streets, past the Deaf Child Area and up the hill until we find the old house where I grew up. Along the way, I'll tell stories about what I remember while we re/discover this neighborhood together.

Elastic City Education Director Ben Weber invites young participants and their loved ones to become a living typewriter that creates cooperative public poetry, letter-by-letter.
Each participant will take on the role of a letter of the alphabet, tagging their personal character onto huge sheets of paper using large custom-made stamps.
The living typewriter will experiment with graffiti, poetry and propaganda using teamwork, improvisation and nonverbal communication. Hop to it!
This way holds 30 people (this includes parents) and is presented in partnership with the Staten Island Museum.

Here it is "fixed." I think it lays much more smoothly now. To fix it, I removed a few inches from the elastic in the back. The elastic guide that comes with the pattern is too long and I read that elsewhere, too. Oh, simplicity.
