26/52 Weeks: Self-portrait

August 2-8, 2011

Everyone says that I have an elastic mouth.

Made by our budding artist, my 9 year old daughter. I'm beginning to understand why she takes so long in the bathroom.

The pattern is inspired by the Artsy Clutch in Amy Karol's book, Bend The Rules Sewing. It really is a great read for either beginner sewers or people like me who are totally self taught and desperately need the fine tuning that this book provides. Amy teaches you when to bend the rules and when to stick to the tried and true methods. She gives you shortcuts but also reminds you that some things, like pre-washing fabric, and using an iron, is essential to professional looking work. This book inspired me to approach sewing with a fresh look, as if I'd never sewn a stitch before. So far, so good. Though I still need some self discipline when it comes to pattern cutting. Not to mention the good sense to stop sewing and go to bed when your eye lids start to shut. My first two wallets came out PERFECTLY. Beautiful! Then the next two got a little weird, but just weird enough to be considered "artsy" imperfections. The fifth and sixth pouches are just plan bad.

I made a bunch of reversible fabric headbands for a friend. She loved them. Yay!

From scraps and leftover elastic to masks for Covid respect.

I used 3/8" plush-back elastic for the waistband.

Louise Cutting shows a tip that if you mark the same sides of your elastic, you won't get a twisted elastic when you thread it through a long tunnel, such as a waistband. Just match up the X's to know that you've got the right sides up.

Using mostly black / grey eye shadow and a bit of brown compact powder. Using a medium sized powder brush I mix both on the brush, tap it off, then really smoodge into the fabric. I would maybe use less brown next time.
