The Sierra designed under engineer JohnOldfield and launched in November 1992, as Fords mainstream mid-sized car, replacing the Ford Sierra with sales beginning on 22 March 1993.

Intended as a World car it replaced the Sierra in Europe and the the Ford Telstar in a large portion of Asia and other markets, while the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique replaced the Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz in North America though initially the Mondeo shared only its windscreen, front windows, front mirrors and door handles with its American cousin.

The new car was developed under John Oldfield at Ford Dunton in Essex, England. Unlike the Sierra, the Mondeo is front-wheel drive in its most common form, with a rarer four-wheel drive version available on the Mk I car only though the floorpan was designed to accept any engine and transmission.

The car was launched in the midst of turbulent times at Ford of Europe, when the division was haemorrhaging hundreds of millions of dollars and Fords had gained a reputations cars designed by accountants rather than engineers. Safety was high priority of the new cars design helping it to achieve the European Car of the Year title for 1994 with features such as ide-impact bars, seat belt pretensioners, and antilock braking systems (higher models) as standard other features included adaptive damping, self-levelling suspension (top estate models), traction control (V6 and 4WD versions), and heated front windscreen, branded Quickclear.

The first generation Mondeo, sometimes referred to as the Mark II was launched in October 1996 an attempt to alleviate criticism that had befallen the original, namely bland styling poor headlamp performance and cramped rear legroom.

Second NCT bus seen coming out of Parliament Street garage was pink line 486, pictured turning onto Lower Parliament Street itself on 9.5.22 and with the Nottingham Corporation Tramways engraving on the building visible to the right.

I remember ages ago the City Council wanted to sell its stake in NCT, keep the garage site and knock it down for redevelopment (or something of that ilk), but I haven't heard anything of it in recent times. Did they abandon the plan?
