I took a glance at eBay to see what the French Toast pedals are going for now. I notice a lot of them bundled with a Dan-Echo pedal, but I think (can't be sure) that's a new teeny version of the Dan-Echo. May be a nice pedal, I don't know.
I have the old Dan-Echo that was much larger than the new mini-pedals. These may be the greatest delay pedals ever. I swear, I don't work for Danelectro. These are the only two I own. I used to use an Echoplex, but obviously there's an issue with maintenance and just plain fear as they age. Now, there's a lot of debate about what made the Echoplex sound so great (if you're in the camp that thinks they sounded great).
They were ancient technology. A tape loop runs through the machine continuously. The handle allows you to manually change the distance between the record head and playback head, thus varying the length of the delay. Obviously the tape generation-loss influences the resulting sound, and in that funky process lies the magic.
Here's the short(ish) version. I was sick of the way my digital delays always sounded and wanted to get that great delay sound that Jimmy Page and early Van Halen recordings had. So I bought an Echoplex and viola, there it was. Well, after a couple of years it died. Just stopped running suddenly and I was back at square one.
I didn't know of anyone local who could repair it and didn't want to put it in the mail to someone, so I bought a cheap Danelectro DE-1 Dan-Echo pedal to get me through in the interim. Funny thing about the Dan-Echo. It has a "Hi Cut" control that rolls off treble. Amazingly, that turned out to be the "magic tone" component that the Echoplex had in spades. Poor frequency response. That was the "special sauce" that made the Echoplex sound so good. Now, I know that's not everyone's belief.
Michael Fuller of Fulltone has implied that people who think "warm" and "poor frequency response" are the same thing "don't get it." And it's entirely possible (probable, even) that I don't get it. I can't afford one of Mike's beautiful tube-driven tape echo boxes, so I'm probably not going to "get it." I do know that my muffled Echoplex did what I seem to like hearing a delay do. Where was I again? Oh yeah, cheese. More specifically, how I like to prepare the cheese I put on my tone.
You (and by 'you' I mean 'me') don't want your echo to sound the same as your realtime guitar sound. It's too busy and the high frequencies stack up in nasty ways and give you a headache. Rolling off the treble works wonders. Tuning the delay to your guitar helps a lot, too. That's another (much longer) story, but the short version is that varying the delay speed until the delay seems to "come into tune" with your low E string makes the delay sound WAY fatter.
Anyway, I never had the Echoplex repaired. It was still DOA until I repaired it when I needed money to start this business and wanted to sell it. Turns out the flywheel just needed a little WD-40. I feel like kind of an idiot for waiting so long to open it up and check it out.
BTW, some people claim that the "warble" of the poor tape motor adds its own tone. I don't really think it's an issue. Also, there are people who talk up the "tape compression" that's added, which may have some small effect. But usually to really get tape compression you have to slam the levels to the point of saturation. I had the solid state Echoplex. There was a trim pot that allowed you to change the record level, but it seems like you'd have to hit it with a pretty hot signal to get into the saturation zone and then the little solid state preamp would be starting to sound like toasted buttocks, which is what I imagine the appeal of the tube models boils down to. I've never had access to a tube model, so I haven't ever given that a try. To me the whole thing was a frequency response issue. Your mileage may vary.

Effects Pedals modify the sound of a musical instrument such as an Electric Guitar by means of changes like distortion, modulation, and feedback. They are often found on the floor on a pedalboard, and are operated with the feet.

I don't put too much about my music on Flickr because Flickr isn't a medium to share audio...but it is a huge part of my life and when I'm not out taking pictures I'm up in my room messing around with the six stringer...check out the notes to get a lil more technical....
As far as bands that I can tell that have had an influence on my style...the list would go something like this:
The Fall Of Troy
Don Caballero
The Mars Volta
At The Drive-In
Minus The Bear
Tera Melos
Frank Zappa
Botch
Rage Against the Machine
Hella
The Smashing Pumpkins
I'm trying to do more with some "minimalistic" ideals right now...I use my delay (looper technically) to throw some foundation out there and just start screwing around with some really simple crap that would sound boring were it not for some background noise (about as close as you can get to the idea behind Don Caballero)....
I suck at writing...there is a lot more I'd like to say and share with all of you but I guess thats why I'm a musician and not a writer!

C3 should be made switchable for a gain boost. R7 could also be 2.2 K.
The jumper between e5 and c5 goes over the cut track on the other side of the board. Pin 2 of the 100 K pot is the output.
Use 2N5458s for just the right amount of gain.

I just finished building the Dan Armstrong Green Ringer. It's an octave-up effect with a certain ring-modulator touch to it.
Oh, at the top is the Octup! from Tim Escobedo. Unfortunately, it doesn't work.

Burford Electronics Mosquito sound clips.
The Mosquito is pretty incredible. It even works into a dirty amp which is rare for octaver pedals.

Cheap case, the circuit almost falling apart inside, weird wiring, but who cares? It’s working!

Repost @keeleyelectronics ・・・ How about The Dark Side for Summer NAMM in Nashville. Has Delay and Plate Reverb, or Rotary Speaker Cab, or U-Vibe with Octave Up or Down. And that to a killer IC Huge Muph Pi for the front end with three way EQ selector and you have stompbox Heaven. #guitar #tone #effectspedals #stompbox #geartalk #knowyourtone #pinkfloyd #davidgilmour #bigmuff #onestompawayfromnirvana, via Instagram: bit.ly/28PI2ZH

Yeah, I know. It's really blurry, but it's the only pic I have of the ol' v2. This one fit into a Milwaukee Saws-all case. Didn't work all that well, because I had to dismantle everything completely in order to fit everything in there. But it looked kinda cool. The chain is a little strange...
Chain: Guitar > Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner > Rat Pedal > Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer > Boss BD-2 Blues Driver > Boss RV-3 Digital Reverb/Delay > Boss DD-3 Digital Delay > Boss TR-2 Tremelo > EH Deluxe Memory Man > Morely Volume Pedal > Fender Twin Reverb
