The guts of my Maestro Fuzz-Tone FZ-1, made in 1962. I also have an FZ-1A. from 1966. Ironically, the FZ-1A sounds much more like "Satisfaction".
Also note the HUGE Germanium transistors.
If you didn't know, the Maestro Fuzz-Tone was the first transistorized guitar effect.
And that's all you need to build a distortion pedal.
In this case, this original Arbiter Fuzz Face reissue sounded like ass (apparently like all of the reissues). I swapped the transistors (that had hFE of 30 to 40) to higher gain AC128s and restored the resistor values to stock values. That did the trick.

Effects Pedals modify the sound of a musical instrument such as an Electric Guitar by means of changes like distortion, modulation, and feedback. They are often found on the floor on a pedalboard, and are operated with the feet.
The photo includes (left to right) TC electronic flashback (delay effect); Boss Chorus Ensemble CE-5 (chorus effect), Boss Flanger BF-3 (flanging effect); MXR Phase 90 (phaser effect) and Roger Mayer Octavia (sound an octave higher).
Building a Matsumin Valvecaster overdrive guitar pedal. All the outer components have been added to the box and it's time to wire up the guts and plug in a 12AU7 tube!

R4 is a 390 Ohm resistor and a 5 K pot to ground.
R14 can also be a 50 K pot for a variable high-pass filter.
hFE of the transistors I used was approximately 500, 600, 500.
One idea was to get as much of the signal to the first clipping stage as possible (large capacitor values), then cut some bass before the rectification to make the signal more uniform and make it "glue together" better (smaller capacitor values) and then use larger capacitor values again to keep the subharmonics.
The 2.2 pF value for C3 was chosen to move the distortion outside the bass and the lower mid range. 1 pF also works but is not as crunchy. Higher values might also sound good.
