School Lunches (Draft 3)
We’ve heard lunch horror stories all our lives, but nothing can really compare to the one unfolding at our school. No, they’re not serving week-old food or mystery meat, it’s healthy food. Having to buy “full meals” at lunch is the main complaint people have, but there are much larger issues along with the full meal deal.
For most of us back in elementary school was when the process that has seemly snuck up on us. They stopped serving cookies, cakes and other sweets with our lunches for the most part. This generation is very focused on what we eat, how much we eat and balanced nutrition. The schools finally decided to take the next step in the program they’ve been trying to implement all along.
We all know too well the step that has been taken, full meals, and less junk food in the vending machines. It’s all really part of a larger step to get rid of all our soda, and junk food. All of this some what takes a lot of the blame for our unhealthy choices off of the our school. Problem is we’re too late in this process for it to really help those who need it, the schools have done their damage, if they‘re really the source to begin with. There isn’t a place and time you can really say you learned good or bad eating habits, but it wasn’t our school.
You can choose to have an apple, salad and milk if you really want it. You can also choose (for the time being, at least) a vending machine lunch of a Mountain Dew, bag of chips and a candy bar if you really wanted. If you are really smart though, pack your own lunch to your standards of health and there will be no problem.
If healthy eating is supposed to help the obesity problem in today’s schools, then we need to at least look in to serving size. You don’t want kids to starve, but too little is better than too much when it comes to food. If someone really wants more, or they want less, let them have it. By now our eating habits are what they are, if we want to be healthy we will have to change them on our own. We tend to have the mind set of can’t, don’t or wont though.
It’s the numbers that get us though, Pepsi sponsorship gives us money for having the machines, and gets the money inside them. Their goal being you drink their products the rest of your life, not to make money. That’s a loss of thousands of dollars yearly that could go towards programs supporting a healthy life style.
You can plead and whine all you want for things to go back the way they were, but face it; even if you don’t think you could be healthier some of your peers could be. This program in the end will bring no longer a message of ‘Pepsi for life’, but healthy eating for life. Whether we can make up the money we will lose with that message, only time will tell.
