"Study Anxiety: The Downfall of Today's Academia"
Studying and test anxiety are more common in students than many realize. Ineffective studying methods, as well as procrastination, can lead to anxiety and a depleted self-image. Students are more likely to struggle with studying and test anxiety when attempting to prepare for an exam or assignment that has heavy weight in a particular course. The anxiety is made especially apparent when they are unable to competently prepare for the exam.
There are physical and mental aspects correlated to study anxiety. Physical components are biological and consist of hormonal, chemical, and muscular changes in the body. These components create interference with the student’s thinking process. They can produce symptoms such as nausea, shortness of breath, clammy hands, a rapid heartbeat, and faintness. As the body experiences these symptoms, basic thought processes including remembering, analyzing, and problem solving are impacted. This leads students whom experience studying anxiety to deduce that their brain is just not capable of functioning properly.
Avoidance and procrastination are popular tactics among students experiencing studying anxiety. These types of pattern lead to a dangerous cycle: procrastination leads to cramming, which leads to anxiety, which leads to self-doubt, leading to excessive anxiety during an exam, which may lead to an inability to utilize one’s full cognitive capacity. Test anxiety can be easily overcome if one chooses to actively avoid the traps most common among students with anxiety, and instead plans ahead and sticks to it.
