The Barrio de La Bolsa arose from the subdivision and sale of the old lands of the Convento de las Agustinas (founded in 1576), which was first divided in two to open Moneda Street to the east in 1852, and the current one was built in the southern half. Iglesia de las Agustinas (1871) and the rest of the block was divided in 1907 when the nuns decided to move the convent to Avenida Vicuña Mackenna creating a "Y" shape to better allocate the land towards Alameda.
The building was designed by the Chilean architect Alberto Cruz Montt1 (curiously the same as the Palacio Ariztía), the engineering was in charge of the construction company Franke, Jullian y Cia. and it was inaugurated in 1921. It has 7 floors in its central body plus a double commercial plate and a two-story balcony tower culminating in a tame spire in the eighth, element which finishes off the corner. In 1923, the studios and the transmission plant of Radio Chilena, the first commercial radio station in the country, were installed on the top floor.
It was acquired by the Mutual de Seguros de la Armada (currently known as "Mutual de Seguros de Chile") on May 10, 1924, paying a total of four million pesos of the time. The institution inaugurated its new offices in the place on May 21 of the same year.
It had the first elevator for an office building and steam central heating. The first suicidal disaster committed in the building was that of a shoemaker named Miguel Lillo Ulloa, who, depressed by economic problems, jumped into the void on December 24, 1928.
