The sequence of images I took of the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. I used my eclipse computer to help me take the images at the right time, but I sometimes used an image from near the right time to use a better looking image. The first image (leftmost) was taken with a different camera than the rest and is scaled down. The last (rightmost) was the only time the sun was obstructed by clouds. All images were taken with the same lens, a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS. Expect for totality, the images also used a 2X teleconverter.

The image is 34,755 pixels wide in case you want a close look.

Trying out the solar eclipse mylar filter on my camera the day before the eclipse resulted in this shot.

I'm thinking that I didn't place the filter right on the lens so the light leaked thru the edges and the crinkles of the filter were captured

And the only eclipse glasses present, as I came content to just take in the atmospheric qualities. She is packing up and leaving here, having never left the side of the road. We were a few miles out the zone of totality, but it was still pretty neat.

I was at my brother's home in Salem, Oregon, to see the total eclipse. In that location, the period of totality was almost 2 minutes long. All of the partial eclipse shots were taken with a Canon T7i with a Tamron 18-300 lens, a 2x telextender, and a solar filter from Thousand Oaks Optical. The total eclipse shot was taken with a Panasonic Lumix 30x travel zoom point-and-shoot camera that also captures raw images.

Everyone seems to have uploaded a photograph of yesterday's eclipse; who I am not to run with the herd?

M/Y Eclipse is a luxury yacht constructed by Blohm + Voss in Hamburg, Germany. The yacht is owned by Roman Abramovich, the exact length is unknown, however is believed to be over 164 metres (538 ft) long, and is due to be delivered to Abramovich in 2010 after the finishing touches have been applied. This makes Eclipse the world's largest private yacht, 11 metres (36 ft) longer than the world's previous biggest yacht Dubai, which belongs to Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai. The yacht's initial cost was estimated at € 340 million (circa $485 million US), but a September 2009 report indicated that final costs could approach € 800 million ($1.2 billion US).

Eclipse has two helicopter pads, 11 guest cabins, two swimming pools, several hot tubs and a disco hall. She also comes equipped with three launch boats, and a mini-submarine that is capable of submerging to 50 meters. Approximately 70 crew members are needed to operate the yacht.

For security, Eclipse is fitted with intruder detection systems and a German-built missile defense system. The windows in Abramovich's master suite and the yacht's bridge are also fitted with bullet-proof glass and both are armor plated. The yacht is also equipped with an anti-paparazzi shield in the form of lasers that sweep the surroundings, and when they detect a CCD, they fire a bolt of light right at the camera to obliterate any photograph. According to The Times, these don’t run all the time, so friends and guests should still be able to grab snaps. Instead, they will be activated when guards spot likely professional photographers nearby.

Due to clouds, the chances for good eclipse shots at Alvord Desert were looking bleak. But since a photo buddy from CA was visiting and he'd been wanting to check out the desert, off we went for an Alvord adventure. We were bummed the clouds were too thick to capture the whole eclipse, but grateful for a brief break that allowed us to snap a few images. Along with the clouds, the wind was blowing like crazy, so I’m surprised any shots came out. First time I tried the D850 & 500mm PF combo for a landscape shot and I have to say I like it!

Eclipse of the moon barefoot in the red dirt road

Series of the full lunar eclipse of 20 February.

Kathy Roberts and I just had an amazing adventure this past week. We left Friday morning to go to Ashland to stay and see a couple of plays. Beyond that, we had no idea where we were going to view the eclipse. The closest reservation I could get was Eugene, Oregon. But, it was a hour drive to the zone of totality.

In Ashland, we had dinner with my brother Bill Roberts and his wife Elizabeth Wies Roberts. They had come up to Ashland couple of days for before and saw a couple of plays. They were going to leave the next morning for Albany, Oregon, which is in the middle of the zone. He was a lot smarter than me and made reservations years ago.

The next day, brother Bill texts that when they checked into the hotel, they upgraded him to a min-suite with and extra bed, we could use if we want. Yes we said.

The next day, we leave early to drive to Albany, we were about a half an hour south of Eugene, when we get a text from our daughter, Jessica Roberts, that they are about a half an hour north of Eugene. They intended to go to the coast to see the eclipse, So we randomly have breakfast with Jessica Roberts, son-in-law, Josh Barizn and grandson Calvin in Eugene, Oregon.

We tell them our plans. Josh checks the weather at the beach, and there is a chance of fog during the eclipse. They decided to stay in Eugene, so we went the to hotel and transfer out reservation to Jessica.

We drive into Albany, with no traffic problems. Brother Bill was out exploring the town. As we were waiting, I was chit chatting with the receptionist when off the top of my head I ask, “Do you have any cancellations”. She looked on the computer, and we end up with a room in the middle of the zone, when a king sizes bed.

The hotel was right next to the Fair Grounds, where there are acres and acres of open viewing space. We text Jessica that there were no traffic problems and would check in with her in the morning.

So the big day comes, we set up a viewing area in the parking lot of the Fair Grounds. Right next to us is a man setting up a lot of camera equipment. I was unable to get a solar filter for my camera, so I was only going to be able to photograph the total part to the event. He says that he has an extra sheet and gives it to me. I set up my camera, take a couple of practice shots and wait.

I am with Kathy, my daughter, Jessica, her husband Josh, grandson Calvin, brother Bill and Sister in law, Liz.

It started gradually, the only way know is to look at the sun through special glasses. Slowly, the moon nipple at the sun until there was just a sliver. But even the sliver was too bright to look at without the glasses. It had grown darker, but still daytime.

Then, pow, the moon blocs out the sun. It gets dark, the stars and planets come out and a magnificent corona circles the moon. I became somewhat emotional, as I was witnessing a fantastic and rare event.

You could feel the difference in the air, it was not exactly cooler, but it felt different. It was an amazing experience.

Then the moon slowly covers less of the sun until everything is back to normal.

That was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I would go to another in a heartbeat.

We thought was were smart by staying in Albany until 3PM and took some secondary roads. What should have taken an hour, took three and a half hours. We bailed at Cottage Grove and stayed in an old fashioned resort, which had seen better days, but had acres and acres of gardens, Kathy was a happy camper.

The next morning we went to Ashland, which lived up to its name, there was smoke and ash from some fires in the region. The traffic was still pretty bad, it was good to stop. No plays that we want to see, ate dinner and came home today.
