…Quite tame by winter standards in Cornwall but unusual to witness in early summer! An Easterly wind whipped up the sea for a couple of days, West facing coves were unaffected. I’ve given this a little more drama on the sliders for Sliders Sunday. Alan:-) HSS….

……But not as rough as it can get in winter months in Coverack! This was an Easterly wind that was whipping a bit of a swell- on the other side of the Lizard it was flat!…….. Hope Friday is going well, stay locked down and cosy to stay safe and to keep EVERYONE else safe too! And this was just for starters! An East wind stirred things up a little here at Coverack - all the boats were safely gathered in the harbour. We went back the next day and it was a bit rougher but not such nice weather with it!………

Eastwind is a 65 ft. schooner based in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. She does day sails, sunset sails or private charter adventures out among the the many islands off the Maine coast. The trips usually include wildlife sightings. In this image Eastwind has set her mainsail and is now raising the foresail on a day with good wind.
In February/March 2018 a fiercely strong and cold Eastwind devastated areas of Macclesfield Forest along with other areas of the countryside.
……another shot taken the next day, it was grey & gloomy which changed the mood somewhat - I’ve used b&w here to heighten the drama. Zoom in and you can see how effective the the harbour wall is in giving protection to the small fishing boats that have all been idle since the winds whipped up. Taken at Coverack on the Lizard peninsula..…

LN-MTC is lined up for take-off on runway 25. I have reports of this aircraft at Riem from 4 October 1971 (brand new), 25 December 1971 and 26 January 1973.
Information from airliners.net - thanks to Jan Olav Martinsen:
Delivered brand new to Mey-Air on 3 September 1971, LN-MTC was repossesed by Boeing in March 1974, converted to B737-201 and delivered as N753N to Piedmont Airlines in May 1974. Later N220US with US Air and Eastwind Airlines. Withdrawn from use at KGSO (Greensboro) in November 1999, scrapped June 2000.
Mey-Air (MT) was formed in 1970 and bought 2 new 737s in 1971 to compete in the growing nordic market for holidays at the mediterranean destinations. Both were fully employed from 1972 but activity decreased during 1973 until the airline stopped after heavy losses in March 1974.

Am letzten Wochenende im Februar hatten wir kräftigen Ostwind. Die Bewölkung war wechselhaft und die Wellen waren sehr hoch. Selbst die Hansestadt Lübeck war betroffen und meldete Hochwasser-Alarm.
East wind on the Baltic Sea
On the last weekend in February we had strong easterly winds. The clouds were variable and the waves were very high. Even the Hanseatic city of LĂĽbeck was affected and reported a flood alarm.

We went to the beach to watch the Strawberry full moon rise, but clouds filled in on the horizon, and an Easterly wind was whipping!
There would be no moonrise, but the moisture in the clouds provided a sunset light show in the form of a partial rainbow. It came and went all evening long.

Previously operated by Western Airlines, this aircraft flew for Delta beginning in 1987 and then was sold in 1988 to start-up Eastwind Airlines.
I think this is a green throated carib but I'm not 100% certain. The head gardener at the resort we were at in St Lucia said they had seven different species of hummingbird on site but I didn't write them down. If anyone can help, that would be most appreciated

My good friend Jan Olav Martinsen shot this arrival shot when LN-MTD is on final apporach to rwy 24 in the summer of 1972, and it is scanned from the slide he gave me.

Now for something a little different. On Sunday 18 March we woke up to snow on the ground which is fairly unusual on the South Coast of England and much less than other parts of the country. It came about by a brief change in wind direction direct from Russia making the weather as cold as current political relations. For locals the image was taken on the south side of Pagham Harbour between the Harbour and Lagoon looking towards Church Farm Caravan Park. The pathway with the footsteps is actually a low wall about 2 feet high where somebody and their dog had walked. The snow had stuck well on the wall but much less elsewhere. The processing included a high key mono conversion to get a really white look. This was also helped by conversion to a sketch.
The picture was taken handheld with a Sony A68 with a Sigma 10-20mm lens at 12 mm. No HDR this time and I started by adjusting exposure in Raw in Capture One including Dynamic range editing and Clarity. A Basic Mono conversion was done in Capture One. In Photoshop Topaz Clarity was used for extra detail. Topaz B&W Effects for a further mono conversion using a high key preset. Finally Topaz Impressions using a sketch preset with a layer mask to keep the footprints unaltered.

Chorlito gris (Pluavialis squatarola) en vuelo, una imagen de ayer mismo. Un dĂa con nubes altas que producian una luz filtrada y suave, suficiente para poder congelar estas balas esquivas que son los chorlitos grises en espacios abiertos.
El fuerte viento del este ( levante), obligaba a los limĂcolas a volar en esa direcciĂłn permitiĂ©ndome acercamientos considerables y muy difĂciles en otras condiciones. Algunos detalles interesantes son; el pico manchado de barro, las plumas del pecho tĂpica de juveniles y por supuesto, esas plumas axilares negras que caracterizan a esta especie y la separa del chorlito dorado ( Pluvialis apricaria)

Black-bellied plover (Pluavialis squatarola) in flight, an image from yesterday. A day with high clouds that produced a filtered and soft light, enough to be able to freeze these elusive bullets that are the gray plovers in open spaces.
The strong east wind ("Levante") forced the waders to fly in that direction, allowing me considerable approaches that were very difficult in other conditions. Some interesting details are: the mud-stained beak, the breast feathers typical of juveniles and of course, those black axillary feathers that characterize this species and separate it from the golden plover (Pluvialis apricaria).

This is a 3 capture composite image merged with Adobe's PhotoMerge utility. I set the zoom full out to get the best detail, and then made 2 captures to get more water on each side for context. I then realized I was missing the top of the main sail mast, so I made a third capture to get all of the mast and more blue sky.
So in the end, there's enough detail in this 10,184 × 6,789 pixel image for you to use the mag 🔍 tool to get a better look at the rigger on the bowsprit getting ready to set the flying Jib².
